My WRITING is so LOW!!!

I usually get a mistake or two here, but I got 740 WITH A 12 ESSAY. Which means I did HORRIBLE in my multiple choice.

Can someone recommend me a prep book to review all the grammar stuff?

Yea, after going through the W thread on here I thought I did awesome (like -1 or -2 MAX.), but my score was 70/80 (the scaled) and 710 overall. How?! And what can I do to improve?

Yeah, I got a 70/80 too. :(

I got a 9 and a 68 I got 680 :(

Firstly, you shouldn’t make a topic proclaiming that you got such a low W score, and then announce that it was 740. 740 is probably 97/98th percentile, and a lot of people would kill for that score. Be sensitive.

Remember that there is only a limited amount of grammatical rules they can test you on, so whatever prep material you have is probably good enough, as long as you go through it thoroughly. For practice questions, I wouldn’t advise third-party materials as I find none of them are able to emulate real questions accurately enough. Instead, get your hands on the cb bluebook and as many qas as possible, and do all the writing questions. Make sure you do them timed. For all your incorrect answers, review them carefully and ensure you understand exactly why you got them wrong. Use the search function on cc to look up explanations for questions that you can’t figure why a certain answer is true.

The score is probably ‘low’ in comparison with the rest of the OP’s scores. In addition, 740 with a 12 essay might be low for some people :)

To the OP, it wasn’t just “low”, is was “so LOW!!!”.

tbh, I would be a little miffed if I got 740, but one has to remember that this is a sensitive time: scores have just been released, and there are probably a lot of people who were just raped and feel uncomfortable with seeing a fairly impressive score like 740 being denounced as “so LOW!!!”.

Listen, I got a 2310 which obviously isn’t that bad of a score. But, I got 740 on Writing also, which makes me feel devastated.

Competition’s harsh. There are a lot of 800s on Writing.

Agreed, although I think there are more 800M than W.

I just reviewed the writing section in blue book and got a 76 but I got a 9 on the essay :'(

“I just reviewed the writing section in blue book and got a 76 but I got a 9 on the essay :'(”

That’s not even relevant.

Yeah. I’d say in terms of 800s, math is the most common. Then, writing and critical reading.

…I was suggesting using the Blue official SAT book to OP, becuase it helpede drastically on writing…I wasn’t talking to you.

Um… self-scored essay?

EDIT: sorry, posted this after you had replied.

Yeah sorry, that was a confusing post, but yea OP, just stick with the blue book, it got me 210 points :P

First of all, my apologies if I have offended anyone. I meant it was low compared to what I usually score on Writing.

Plus, I don’t think people who got low in Writing would be offended by that. Average people who take the SAT don’t really prepare for it too much. I’ve really prepared for it a lot quite intensively, so it’s nothing against competency/intelligence or anything, just that I’ve probably worked harder in preparing for the SAT, so naturally I would get a high score.

Anyway, yeah. I use the Blue Boom for “official” practice tests (simulating breaks and stuff), and usually got a decent score in Writing there too.

I agree about 3rd party books. I use Kaplan, McGraw and PR test books for section-based practices (like if I’m working on Writing, etc), and the Writing there seems predictable and easy.

BTW, I got a 780 in Math and a 750 CR.

And thanks Raphael. If there’s no clear-cut best Writing prep book, I’ll just cross-reference my books and review them.

By the way. I only have 2 BB practice tests left (I stupidly took lots of them when I was just starting the SAT), and I’m retaking in June.

I’m saving the two for the Saturdays before the June one, simulating time and stuff.

What can I use instead for real SAT-like practice?

I usually get 3~4 wrong in CR and perfect in Math. I’m guessing I can’t do much better in CR and am going to focus on getting Writing to a 800 (guessin it’d be easier than raising CR a little) to reach my goal of 2350. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I had the opposite problem - I got 80 out of 80 on my MC but an 8 for the essay score… that was a little disappointing but I had a feeling my essay was weak so I’m not surprised, nor am I too upset. I still ended up with a 770…

I got a 670 on writing. 70/80 mc and 8 on the essay.
March I got a 760. 75/80 and a 10. I felt confident on both aspects of mine this time, so I don’t know what happened.

Thank God for superscoring…

Sorry for kinda jacking jkpark’s thread, but I got 70/80 with a 10 essay for 710. This is pretty bad considering I almost solely prepped for this section for 1 month and had like no improvement come test time.

So, I have a couple weeks before the June SAT. What should I be doing? Are the Princeton Review 11 Practice Tests accurate? I realize that the W section is predictable, but I keep making mistakes in the Sent. Correct. or Paragraph correc.
Time is not an issue either.

I had 800W. :D

As for tips, I really don’t have too much. I’m kind of a natural writer and didn’t study at all for the writing section. Look at verbs in relation to the nouns doing the action (plural/singular problems are very common). Also keep a look out for nonessential words or modifiers.

If you have any specific questions, though, I’ll try to answer them.
