Nasa Sharp

I applied to the residental component and i was wondering what my chances of getting in are:

Stats:

Female Sophmore
Ethnicity: A reallyyyyy small ethnic Asian group, less than 20000 in the enitre world
Was the Freshman Honor Court/Homecoming Princess
Freshman/Sophmore class president
GPA: Freshman year:4.00/3.83 Soph: 3.29 (I know bad, but my teachers said they would change my grades once i took my AP's)

Part of this years 1st Aacdemic Decalthalon B division, 2nd place overall in all of LAUSD for my division (missed being 1st by 1 question...sigh)
1st in Astronomy (some of the info is directly from NASA'S website), Art, Lang and Lit
2nd in Social Science, Economics
3rd in Math and 4th in Music
2nd place in NJROTC Academic Compeition, only Freshman to get the Honor Cadet in NJROTC

I got the highest PSAT score out of the sophmores in my school, 196 (pretty sad.. eh?), hishest score on out of sophmores on all english benchmarks tests

Part time job since 11 as a background actress

2004 Smedley award in LA County Science Fair for creativity/ingenuity in the field of science, Honorable at County, 2nd place at high school

The problem is that when i sent in my application, i had not taken all the finals for all of my classes (i got an extension for being in ACA DECA) so I had some Incompletes on my report card, and my AP Chem teacher put a "D" on my report card by mistake. I sent in my most recent report card, 20 week, w/o the incompletes which accounts for my pitiful GPA for the fall of this year. And though i got all A's on my STEM classes last yar, this year i got C's on them, but they are APs. I'm afraid this will look bad for the ppl looking at my records.

There is also something that i believe may help me though, since i come from such a small ethnic group, well... my family has been ruling it for like centuries and apparently I am the next in line for the throne. I don't know if i should mention this because i don't want to seem like a nut or something though... Also i heard some ppl talking about their PSAT OR sATs score but i can't remember if there was a spot on the application for us to put those scores in.

I know this is an insanely long post put i would be soo grateful if anyone would reply to this and tell me if i have any hope of getting in. Thanx

whoa what the heck... you're an interesting person

I'm gonna say that you don't have a great chance only because you are a sophmore. All the kids in my residential program a) were juniors and b) were rejected as sophmores. They made it very clear that juniors and seniors got preference.

I am 18- did SHARP last summer. It was the only thing i applied to, and I'm either going to work in a bookstore or get an engineering internship this summer because I can't deal with the rigidity of SHARP two years in a row.

tettyk: What aspects of NASA SHARP were so irritatingly rigid?

What happens if they call you but you're not there?

OMG!!! Ijust realized that I never sent in the copy of my birth certificate with my application! Do you think this will jeopardize my chances of getting in? My name and social # were posted on the website on the list for the resendential pool. Maybe they haven't noticed yet? I mean... I filled out all the other parts, and I did say I was a US citizen on the apllication...Somebody please reply... I'm freaking out..

Does the MTSI actually contact our counselours too? I don't think my counselor doesn't likes me bec. i took more AP's than she recommended... she was being quite negative to me abt my choice of classes... though i am doing quite well in them.. If i didn't know better i would say she has a grudge against me because though she realllyyyyyy tried to make me take easier classes i chose the harder classes. If they call her, she might say that i'm immature or something even though i have had a job since i was 11, was the youngest person on ACA DECA, and the sophmore with the most APs in the school. She evn had my parents like sign this release form to say that she doesn't accept responsibilty for if i fail my classes...now isn't that a real vote of confidence...

NemesisFang, I think you have a really good shot except for the report card thing. Maybe you can ask the cousellor, or if she doesn't like you, you teachers, to write a letter explaining the situation. And you probably shouldn't mention the thing about the throne but thats still pretty awesome lol.

thans for the info

my counselors (i have like 3...b/c we are a magnet school) all tell me every day that i have "too much on my plate" and i shouldn't "bite off more than i can chew" (what's with the foodisms?) but i think deep inside they love us and they just want to give us a hard time. atleast i hope so because things get very heated when they tell me i can't take something because "it's never been done before".

btw nemesis, what classes are you taking? i'm took 7 APs this yr so i can imagine why they gave me a hard time...

well... i have like 10 classes...a part-time job (i'll quit it, i swear!), i'm on the NJROTC Academic Team/Air Rifle team, but like ACA DECA is over now.. I only have 3 AP's (Chem, World, Calc) , but i'm the only soph at my school to be taking more than 1. I am also shortly going to start volunteering at a equestrian center, n at a hospital morgue (only spot open...grumbles).

I again say wow...haha. I don't know about these summer programs, but just wait until you apply to college..

o... and i 4got to mention that i'm am in both the Republican club n Democrat club (treasurer in 1, historian in other, lol). Christian club, atheist club, agnotic club... well basically any club at school as u can tell... I'm also going to start a knitting club (we'll like knit stuff 4 troops overseas) n an astronomy club (will that look good 4 sharp?) And i'm in the magnet program, all honor or AP classes, except 4 life skills, biggest load of bs EVER. Well mostly all my classes are pretty easy 4 me right now as i already learned everything 4 my classes already 4 Aca deca (ie Sophocles 4 Eng. etc). Its almost as if my teachers decided to teach everything that i learned already for Aca lol.

wow nemesis. busy would be an understatement. i say, good job. are you taking online classes for the extra few? i took only 2 APs last yr but then again, sophs weren't allowed to take ANY at my hs and i had a heated argument with the office and they wouldn't let me skip precalc (was a waste of my time too!). but i have to give you props.

how do you participate in the aca team/rife team? do you stay after every day? in our school you need to stay after every day to stay on. i can't do that because i'm on robotics team (it's like a full time job, i swear -- i love it though) and i have envirothon comptns and tennis team.

don't volunteer somewhere if you don't want to. there are plenty other ways to get hours by doing what you want. that's my principle. this is YOUR life, don't do anything because you have to, do it because you love it.

keep the grades up and get good test scores and you are set =)
(then again i don't know much but that's my opinion)
btw what IS this really small ethnic asian group?

NemesisFang, how are you in Republican club AND Democrats club...and Christian club AND Atheist club? I'd understand if you're just trying everything out...but it's weird that you have officer positions in the political clubs...do they not know?

NemesisFang, it's great that you're so involved, but I hope you're not losing sight of what really matters -- that you do the things you love and follow your passion whatever that may be, rather than simply doing the things to "look good" or "get in." Passion is one of those things that really shine through, and everyone, including the adcoms, will be able to tell if you're padding your resume. Maybe I'm naive, but I believe that the adcoms really want to get to know you, and get to know who you are, rather than simply what you want them to see on your application.

going on with what frozen-tears said, i've never seen this emphasized so much as i have when looking at decisions for MIT. they want passion and they accept nothing less. i'm not saying you dont have it, i'm just making sure that's what your aim is.

i learned this after 9th grade, where i was minimally involved in many things -- which didn't make me happy. now i am heavily involved in three activities and all my time goes there but that's exactly how i love it. i wouldn't change it for anything.

well... i'm taking the classes at a community college. 8 classes on Mons., reg 7 high school rest of weekdays, more collge classes on sat, online classes on sun.

as for aca team/ air rifle, well the NJROTC aca was a different team than ACA DECA. I did both, some topic were the same, like asto, social science, for ROTC the rest i could bs. Seriously, for Rotc nobody studies, so it doesn't matter what score u get, you'll always get higher than somebody.

They didn't make me stay after.. well i stayed after 4 ACA DECA, obviously..but 4 rotc aca/rifle, i worked out a sweet deal... See in my school, NO ONE in the magnet joined rotc, i'm the only 1. So as long as i show up 4 compeitions, win them a few medals/ trophies 4 the trophy case they give me an A, this is like the 1st year that my school as EVER won trophies 4 totc aca. I don't even have 2 show up 2 class, n i get promoted, n every other week i win some sort of medal, lol. I'm even going to be aca commander next year(hehe). It works out well since if i took regular PE, i know i would fail, academics is my forte. So if any1 need 2 fullfill ur pe requirement u might be able to work out a deal with them.. I'll just do the volunteering at the morgue thing since it look good 4 med school, plus my expertise is in anatomy, etc (don't ask me why, it seems 2 be the only thing that i excell at).

As 4 the small asian group i'm Kachin (which is actually a group of other ethnic groups). But also something called the Zaw, sp?. So there is actually less than 10000 of us. My family is like 1/3 asain, 1/3 european, 1/3 middle eastern, the whole "keep everything within certain family bloodlines" led to a pretty interestling ethnic mix, lol.

oh... all those political party clubs knew all right, when i showed up 4 the debate, on the opposite side, the green party club, hilarious i tell u. I have decied to tone things down a lot though. I'm just trying 2 do what i really believe in... i'm not really a repub or a dem, but i support like environ causes, but there wasn't a green party b4 i joined the pol party clubs. A 4 the relig, my family is pretty screwed up religiously, my family is basically buddhist/muslim/jewish/christian/athesist . We have no problem accepting other religions(my grandmother is an buddhist but she allows her house to be turned in2 a makeshift christian church every sunday). Those clubs weren't really established when i 1st joined... i just want every1 2 know i support every1's ideas/religions .
