where did she end up going?

Duke. Still not sure it's a "comfortable fit".

define comfortable lol

Well, as of late first semester, said she's not as "happy" as others appear to be, and while she was always at the top in our community, she seems impressed/intimidated at times, and once said "I used to be good at things!". The latter was after yet another frustrating tryout for theatre and singing stuff, but since then she's had some success, and seems happier. Also, she doesn't drink.

P.S. She didn't apply to any Ivies ; probably couldn't even name them. Same goes for most of her high school friends.

hmm...well do think it would have been better had she entered a state school where she could have been a higher achieving student and potentially enter better grad programs....or enter duke potentially not do as well and have little if any open grad programs?

Not really thinking about grad schools at this point; I just want her to be "happy", and get whatever she can out of the next for years. I don't know that there is anyplace "perfect" (i.e. I was okay with not going state because there are not many Blacks in our upper tier state schools); mostly thinking a state school would have been closer for her, and cheaper for me!

hmmm... i see although i have to say happiness is not my main priority

Yeah, it's not her dad's either....

well i just want a high paying job to be quite honest...if thats what ivies can guide me toward than so be it...
that being said...i'm sure i can find happiness anywhere i go :)

I made a topic somewhere else and got no replies, but I’ll just ask it here…

you may just want to skip around the block of text to read my questions first

Hi, I just found out that I’m a National Achievement Semi-Finalist (the only one in my county within the past 2 years), and I have a 4.05 weighted GPA and 3.3 unweighted GPA. I’m in the IB Program and I have around 100 or so community service hours. But, I’m not in any clubs and I’ve only done track for 2 years and the International Baccalaureate Ambassador club during my freshman year because it was closed the year afterward.
I have taken the SAT once, but as dumb as it sounds, I just wanted to see how well I could do on it without having any preparation other than the 192 I got on my PSAT. That was last year, and I need to take it again so that I can send it to the NASP for Finalist qualification. I ended up getting a 1690 (I skipped the essay because I knew I’d be taking it again, so I got a 540 on the writing and a 580 - English and 570 - Math).

Does anyone know or have a general ideas of what kind of minimum SAT scores the National Achievement Finalists have (in general, or by state if possible)?

Based on what I’ve said, do I have a shot? The green packet they gave us said they’d only be disqualifying about 300 people from finalist standings.

Any encouraging or discouraging words would be appreciated. I just need something…

I recently took the SAT after being named a National Achievement Semi-Finalist, and I didn’t do well:
Critical Reading: 700
Writing: 610
Math:610

I noticed that I didn’t reach the projected score range of 640-740 for my writing score. Does this mean I am automatically ineligible to become a Finalist?

btw: my unweighted g.p.a is a 4.0

Honesty is encouraged.
:(

What overall score is needed to make NAF?

I know to make National merit, a student needs a 1960. Call NMCorp and find out what the minimum score is for NAF. You currently have a 1920 (that may be high enough)

Why do you think that you need a projected writing score of 640-670?

COLLEGEBOARD -
Nat’l Merit Corp 847-866-5100
NMCorp code 0085

BTW…did you have your scores sent to NMCorp? If not, do so.

Ok…I called NMCorp for you since I thought you might be at school.

You need to look at your SAT Writing subscore (the multiple choice section). If it’s a 61 or better, then you do have an overall qualifying score.

If your SAT writing sub-score is a 60 or lower, please call them and they can tell you if you still have a qualifying score.

For NMSF to NMF, they give the actual qualifying score (this year is 1960), but for NA they don’t announce it.

Thank you so much mom2collegekids,

I thought I needed a writing score of at least 640 because on the PSAT, my projected range was 640-720. I thought I had to achieve an SAT score that echoed that score range.

My writing sub-score is a 62, so I just made it! The site doesn’t list a requirement for the overall SAT score.

Thanks again. :)

oh good!

Super congrats!!!

(and, no, you don’t have to match your PSAT…every NAF will have at least the same qualifying score no matter what their PSAT was.)

Did you send your SAT score to NMCorp?

code # 0085

Question: I got a letter saying i have an opportunity to continue in the 2011 competition for the NMSC scholarship… this doesnt mean I am a semi-finalist am I?

What year are you in high school?

What was your junior year PSAT score?

When did you get this letter?

I am a senior

I got a 185 (I got a 61 on the writing)

I got the letter today from my counselor. The first line says “It is a pleasure to notify you that you are among a group of high school seniors who have an opportunity to continue in the 2011 competition for a corporate sponsored scholarship sponsored by teh NMSC. NMSC has included you in a pool of award candidates based on the basis of your performance on the 2009 PSAT.”

No, you are not a semi-finalist. You are being considered for a scholarship offered through National Merit by a corporation which probably employs one of your parents.

can someone give me some information about this program? like what is it?
