I accidentely put "National Honor Roll" as one of my academic awards on an important college application. Given its a scam, will I appear like an idiot and could it be grounds for rejection?

Um............... yes?

OMFG. Are you serious?

What's national honor roll?

A scam organization making itself out to be an honor distinction.

Usually the ones that require money are scams. But I don't think it's a overly bad thing, I'm sure the worst that could happen is that admissions officers will just skip it. many students have probably been fooled the same way.

It's definitely a scam. And thank you very much for the more detailed answer. Appreciate it a lot.

oh no! i put it down down... but it was for UC apps and they gloss over things more than private colleges do. so it should be fine right? phew good thing i read this post before i submitted my private apps!

Also, a follow up question: Most applications ask for awards or distinctions from 10 - 12 grade. The sad part is I honestly don't have many - my school isnt the award-giving type and there were few available competitions during these three years to participate in. How much is this section weighed? Is having only a few awards (only about 3) a significant weakness?

three seems like a modest number. have you had any honors or distinctions? also, some clubs and associations give lifetime memberships if you've been in them long enough... but really, there's no need to be excessive. A few key placed awards are good enough... just showcase your strengths and your passions and your special abillities in your essay. You just have to stand out in different ways, probably.

Thanks. I have a lot of extracurricular activities and a minor patent. So hopefully that may take the attention off the awards. Honors? Well I'm a member of some important clubs and I hold some key positions but I'm putting all that on the EC section; the awards and honors section is separate.
