National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

My guess is CA cutoff may be close to 220. My S said few kids got 217-219 @ his school in addition to 7-10 220+ scores.

@srk2017 …have they had NMSF at your S school in the past? If so, how many…do you know?

I just don’t see how the SI can go up when the total points went down. I would think the SI would at least stay the same or be a few points lower than last year.

It would be great if more students could ask their counselors for student, school & state info - – we have had a lot of scores reported on this thread & counselors are meant to be helping students understand their scores in the context of their school, state & the country. Please report back if you find out anything.

I agree. It would be helpful.

@AJ2017 wrote:“Okay. So looking at Florida’s state summary for last year, Florida test takers accounted for around 22.5% of all test takers.”

Last year 70,287 Florida juniors took the PSAT. 1,595,486 juniors took the test overall. Florida was 4.4% of the total.

Yes, my S’s school usually have around 8-12 NMSFs every year. Based on that fact I am assuming 217 may be too low for this year.

Whoops. Put it into calculator quickly and did not double check. Still seems very strange the mean score of the that percentage of test takers would be in the 72 percentile from a historically low to mid scoring state.

“Very strange” is a charitable way of putting it. “I’ll believe it when I see it” is what a statistician might
say.

Maybe this bodes well for the non-common core states. I believe there are only about 5 of us that haven’t adopted yet. Texas is one of those. So, if we do worse relative to other states than in the past, does that mean we have gotten less smart? LOL

@AJ2017

Above you said:
GC at my son’s school gave me this info. National Tested Mean 1009, State Mean (Florida) 1075, School Mean Score 1202.

Here is some Florida data from 2012: http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/7570/urlt/0084282-collegeboard2012sat-results-florida.pdf – Florida was a little above national ave. I am wondering if the “national Mean” reported to GCs is from a research study & not all actual test-takers & I think many believe that info on pg. 7 here is not accurate https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/2015-psat-nmsqt-understanding-scores.pdf
and need to use section scores in concordance tables which seem to produce lowers SIs.

@Speedy2019 thanks for the link and info.

@Tgirlfriend No, I have not seen anything for TX either…no one seems to have any info…or at least no one wants to publish anything to the public!

Are the SI percentiles that different from the TS percentiles? I know you can’t really do this, but let’s say a TS of 1075 means on average a person’s SI would be about 161. I know that the SI varies depending on whether a student did better on math or english but the average SI of someone with a TS of 1075 would be about 161 which is in the 70 percentile. Again far too high for the average student in Florida. Please forgive me if I am calculating this incorrectly since I am posting as I am trying to do other things as well. But to me it seems that both the TS and estimated SI score percentile correlate pretty well and they both seem off.

One explanation for scores going up is reading and writing sections are easier than before and it is more about evidence based reading than memorizing obscure words.

Oh, I think I understand what you mean now. Use the concordance tables that were published earlier and not use the PSAT Understanding Scores 2015 to figure out a percentile. I think that would make a lot more sense because the latter makes no sense at all. But why would they publish it? It is very misleading.

Score Min Max %tile
1520 228 228 99.86
1510 226 227 99.83
1500 224 226 99.81
1490 222 225 99.77
1480 220 224 99.73
1470 218 223 99.69
1460 216 222 99.64
1450 214 221 99.60
1440 212 220 99.54

Even if you have pretend numbers based on phantom test takers, how can every state’s mean be above the national mean? (I realize we have not heard from every state yet.)

Where are you getting 99+ breakdown from?

Here are the Florida scores that were previously captured in this thread:
tableforsix 225 FL
doraemon33004 223 1490 FL
mitrak 222 FL
samgallahan 218 1460 FL

delilahhxc 216 FL
long2181998 216 FL
atr123 215 1440 FL

calchong 212 FL

If any of these folks are active on this thread - perhaps you could inquire what your GC’s reports are showing for student, school state data. thanks to all.
