Has anyone here ever attended one of those? The forum on Defense, Intelligence, and Diplomacy looked pretty interesting to me. Any opinions? Waste of time?

My son went to the one on medicine. It was useful for him because they "shadowed" doctors and saw what being a doctor is in practice. Some folks think it is some kind of honor or something and lose interest when they hear it doesn't carry any weight on applications. I don't think it is an honor, but if you have an interest in something and want to find out more about it to decide if it is the path you want to follow, then it is useful. It was kind of expensive, but cheaper than a wrong career choice.

I applied for the scholarship from them; I haven't received anything back from them yet. The only thing that I belive it will do for apps is to evince your passion for something (Law, Medicine, Politics, International Relations).

My D went last year to the one on Law in Washington DC and found it fascinating and worthwhile for what she learned and the diversity of students she met. Just don't go thinking that it is an honor or EC that will help in your admission. If your family can afford it or a group sponsors you it is worthwhile going as is anything which furthers, piques or explores an interest you have.

Thanks for the replies..I was invited to attend the forum on defense in Washington D.C. I am considering going, because working for the defense/intelligence community is what I would love to be doing one day. I don't see it as anything to enhance my application, but rather a fun learning experience

I went to the medicine one- very fun and interesting.

My friend is participating in one right now (she's in D.C.). She says that she is having a blast and meeting so many new people from all over the country. I know many people who have done them (I am hoping to do one also depending on my financial situation next summer) and I really believe they are worth it. It's a great opportunity to meet people who are just as motivated and bright as you are with similar interests. It's not just something to put on your college app.

Half my school does NYLF.

i dont know...they are not very selective so anyone who's passing in high school can go...as long as he/she pays...i mean sure...meeting new ppl...and shadowing doctors could be worth while...but u can do it right at ur own community except it those experience doesnt cost 2 grand...they dont offer that much scholarhsip...1 got 700 and i think only because its need-based...it was a good experience but for 2 grand...its not worth the money

Anyone know anything about NYLC? I have to go on Saturday...

that program is even worth than the forum...all they do is like give u a tour of the city...dc for example..u tour all the museums and famous sites...its pretty much like vacationing u dont learn that much and u have tons of free time...

wonderful. dsiopajfi ****.
