I recently received a call from a coach at the Academy saying that I was accepted to the Naval Academy. He said that it was "in my file" that I was accepted. He also said that he had waited three days to tell me this, because coaches are supposed to give the congressperson or senator who nominated you a chance to call you and inform you themselves.

I have not received a call from my congressman yet. What I am curious about is how would the Academy go about informing me of my acceptance if a coach or congressperson didn't call me? Would a letter be sent similar to the one from the nomination process? And how long do I have to inform the Academy of my decision on whether or not to attend?

If you have an appt, USNA will send you a large manilla envelope containing a blue portfolio and various papers, and all instructions will be included (I know this because I just got mine almost two weeks ago). The deadline is that of most colleges - May 1st I believe.

My MoC attempted to call me but I was unavailable at the time, and a few days later my regional director called to notify me of my appointment.

I would suggest checking your DoDMERB account to see your status. According to others I’ve spoken to, the day they were informed of their appointment, their admission status in the “US Naval Academy” box changed from “In Process” to “Offer Extended”, and mine did the same thing.

My family spends hours waiting for the mailman to arrive, all to no avail. My son has had 3 congressional nominations and was told he was triple qualified last fall. We have heard nothing and I am starting to doubt that his dream will come true. We will not give up the ship yet, but any advice on how to handle not hearing anything and the wondering he will get an appointment are really eating away at us…

The majority of those who have nominations, even three of them, and are also triple qualified will not find out their status until sometime in April

Not sure what you are basing this on. Federal law prohibits commencing the selection from the national pool until all principal appointments are awarded. This normally does not happen until mid to late March. So, if one hasn’t heard by the end of March, they are probably not a principal or by the end of April for the national pool, they will probably not be selected from the pool. This will only leaves appointments to replace those who fail to accept and wait until May 1 to decline their appointments. USNA has established a waiting list the past couple of years to capture these last few appointments.

NAVYmomwannabee, waiting is HARD, but things are completely out of your hands for now. Try to focus on spending quality time with your son right now, I assume he’s going to be leaving for college whether it’s USNA or a traditional school. I know it’s easier said than done ;)

pachrian and all,
thanks for your words of encouragement and help! (However, I know that I will try to get home from work as soon as possible to check the mail!!! :)

Navymomwannabe: We are waiting, not so patiently, as well. My son has Principal Nomination from congressman and another from a senator. We know he was triple Qd but waiting for a broken bone in the hand to heal completely. We see the doc on the 15th and hope for a full medical release then. His BGO told him that according to the USNA file he was still triple Q’d, the remedial wasn’t showing where she could look. Who knows. He has decided that he will call admissions once he has the full release. Until then…we wait!

My son received letter today from our Senator congratulating him on his appointment! Son hasn’t received the envelope from the academy yet but I hear USNA gives Senator a chance to notify first. How exciting on a snowy day off from school!!! The letter came from the one nominating source that didn’t give him a nomination. LOL!

I hope that you son’ s hand heals and all is well. He sounds like a very strong candidate. I am actually resisting going to the mailbox today because of the fear of disappointment. I think the worse part of the wait is hearing no communication what so ever. There seems to be a period when the candidate first starts out that you are really doing things that keep your mind of the waiting…visiting the Academy during the fall, BGO interviews, congressional interviews…now the silence is deafening. Another thing that has been hard on me, not so much on him, as that 2 of his friends received appointments last week that were athletic related…

Congratulations! I think that would be the most wonderful news ever on a snowy, or not so snowy day! I also heard that the congressmen/women will notify first, as well. Our friend says they had a message on their answering machine. Shortly thereafter, the packet arrived.

In our house it was the MOC nomination envelope arrives via regular mail about noon, appointment package arrives via express mail at about 1:00 p.m.

In our house DS received email and letter from Sen #1 re:nomination from him. A couple of days later a personal phone call from Sen #1 re: appointment. 5 days later letter from Sen #2 re: nomination from him, 2 days later appointment packet arrived regular USPS in large manilla envelope.

It sounds like how you receive the info really varies. Is there any set pattern to it? I am now terrified to go to the mail box and receive thin white envelope, but have recently been assured by another member of this forum that that could be an LOA. I guess I have to trust that whatever is meant to be for my son, is meant to be! I have another quick question…does this mail come certified, regular…? I am I chasing the wrong entity? Should I be waiting for the UPS man? Fed ex???

Best of luck to your son, NAVYmomwannabee! One thing to keep in mind is that Annapolis has had so much snow. I’m sure the admissions office has been slowed down greatly by the weather.
I can’t tell you to be patient because I know it doesn’t help to hear someone say that! I asked my son several weeks ago why he wasn’t checking the mail or his online status everyday. His response was “Me running to the mailbox isn’t going to make it happen any quicker. If it’s going to happen, it will come when it comes.” Words to live by. I figured if he wasn’t stressing about it, I guess I shouldn’t either.
As far as the mail, his appointment packet came by US Postal Service Mail, Priority Mail. It did have a Delivery confirmation sticker on it. We happened to be outside when the postal carrier came by which was a good thing because it was too big to fit in our mailbox. It was in a large manilla envelope and contained the BBF (Big Blue Folder).

NAVYmomwannabee, doesn’t mymsyto3’s son sound like our sons? Sitting back all calm while mom stresses I believe that is one reason my son loves USNA, most kids are very much like him, hardworking, goal oriented, self reliant, smart,…

Keeping my fingers crossed! Will PM you back later.

Our sons certainly do sound alike. If we would get anything in the mail with good news, I think you will hear me screaming and carrying on from where you live! That is a good point about the snow. That will give me one more thing to think about tomorrow when I go to the mailbox…oh, no! Kids just reminded me that tomorrow is PRESIDENT"S DAY! No Mail or school!!! Will maybe I will “take the day off” from checking the mail and caller ID for congressional notification! :)
