If one's school is using naviance and requests that students provide their common app username and password in naviance for teacher recs, is the information safe? Would you have a problem with it?

You really don’t trust your high school’s employees? What evil-minded things do you think they’d do with the information?

I’m not quite sure why anyone would need to log into the Common App Online as the student.

I’m not saying anyone isn’t trustworthy, just that the request doesn’t make any sense. The Common App Online has a portal just for counselors and teachers. They don’t need to log in as the student to submit their documents.

Perhaps the request was misinterpreted?

If the school uses Naviance to submit, rather than directing the recommenders, etc. directly to the Common App, then the requested info is needed. At least, that’s how it worked at our HS last year.

My son’s h.s. requests the common app user name and password as well. It is my understanding that this is needed to electronically submit his transcripts and teacher recommendations to the colleges he will apply to. I just checked his naviance account and this was noted on his application page: ““Your Common Application username and password has been stored to help locate your account when teachers submit their recommendations.””

My apologies. I wrote to Common App last night and their reply confirmed that the Common App ID and password is needed.

Interesting. My S is not using the common app at all; I wonder how that would work in his case.

Thanks for looking into it for me, Dean J.
