ND or University of Nebraska-Lincoln Raikes School

Hi guys! I'm a high school senior. I'm currently deciding between the above mentioned schools for a computer engineering major. I've been accepted into both and am currently waiting for financial aid from both. I expect to pay $5000 - $8000 for ND and $0 - $1000 for UNL. Money isn't the issue though. My question is about the experience and programs per college. I grew up in Lincoln so I know UNL campus, and I have also visited ND. I like both and can't decide between the two. Can anyone give some advice or experience from either or anything about computer engineering at either school? Thanks in advance!

The is not a college in this country where you cannot get a good education. Choose the environment where you believe the you have the greatest chance of success (academics, professional network etc). If the schools are equal, then choose where you will be happy (public or private, greek life or GDI, warm weather or hockey, or whatever). If the schools are equal, then why pay more for what is otherwise equal.

Thanks WestCoast! Great advice.

Even though engineering is seen as less of a “networky” major, the ND Network cannot be emphasized enough. ND grads stand up for each other in droves across the nation; Nebraska grads may be similar within Nebraska and states in close proximity to it, you’ll be much more hard pressed to find an interviewer from Nebraska in NYC than from ND. Nebraska is a great school, but the Notre Dame name and prestige overshadow it by a wide margin. Notre Dame is a national brand, Nebraska is not. Career opportunities after college is heavily stacked in ND’s favor.

However, you’ll probably find it easier to succeed at UNL as a big fish in a small pond. ND will definitely be more of a small fish in a big pond experience.

It really comes down to what you want. UNL is a big state school, ND is a medium sized private. ND doesn’t have greek life. ND is Catholic, and the university itself is pretty conservative because of this. UNL is cheaper, if by a small margin. ND is in Indiana, UNL in Nebraska. Overall they’re pretty different schools.

I think everyone on this section of CC would take a ND education for 8000 dollars a year every day; I would take that offer in a heartbeat. However, it all comes down to what makes you happier.

Hope you succeed at wherever you go! Go Irish

Thanks Drew! Well, my financial aid package came in and my parents and I have been pouring over it. It’s not as favorable as we had hoped. The FA package expects my parents to put in around $10,000 and they can barely afford that. But, they are hesitating to send me to ND because the online ND FA website says to expect increased costs each year. They don’t want to get me to my senior year only to be forced to take out a loan to pay my increased senior tuition. My question is whether ND will change my package each year to match that rise in cost. If anyone has any experience with ND FA, please feel free to put in your two cents.
