Need advice? BU kid here to help

Hey all,

I haven’t posted to CC for some time now, but I’d like contribute.

Some topics I know well:
Psychology / Computer Science
Warren Towers / Myles Standish
Computing on campus

EDIT: FYI, I am in my third year

Feel free to PM me with questions-- or post here.

OK, thanks!

Some questions:
How does one address mail to someone in Warren? Is it Warren Towers, 700 Comm Ave, Room ----, Tower --, Boston University, Boston (what's the zip??)
Can the furniture be moved in a corner double? If not, is the configuration the same as a regular room, just more space in the middle?
Is there a view from a --15 room in the B tower?
Is there room for one or two of those 3 drawer plastic set of drawers for storing towels and other sundries?
If not, if we get him bed risers would that provide enough room for those plastic drawer thingies?
Is there anything covering the closet? If not, do kids bring a cover? If we bring a twin flat sheet and some hooks would that be ok or sorta dopey?
Where do kids put TV? Is there room on the provided dresser?
What size rug will fit in the room?
Is there a place above the desk for a bulletin board?
Do kids have a place to stash their toiletries in the bathroom? Or do they bring them from their rooms each time wash up?
If we order things in advance from Bed Bath and Beyond, where would we pick it up?
Thanks so much for offering to answer questions!

Answers, in order, as I best I can provide them:

Mail may be addressed to Your Name, [room|$tower]Warren Towers, 700 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA, 02215. The mail room gnomes will figure the rest out. If you ever forget your address, check a piece of the junk mail.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't --15 a corner double? If so, congratulations, because that's incredible luck for a freshman. You'll overlook Commonwealth Avenue and a lot of the opposing tower. Which tower you face depends on your sex and floor.

Let me assume that you have a standard double. There is room in your closet for drawers. You may also fit them under your bed.

Extra large rack raisers are recommended. I never used them, but I'm the exception. I'm looking to sell a set, actually. . .

A heavy curtain obscures the closet. Don't worry about looking dopey.

You might want to negotiate TV use with your roommate. I've seen them beneath beds and on desks when there are two. I recommend perching a shared TV atop your minifridge. Yes, I said minifridge, not microfridge. As a freshman, you're guaranteed to have a dining plan. You won't need a microwave of your own. A minifridge will set you back $40-- half that if your roommate ponies up. Fruit's better than nachos, anyhow.

Any size rug will fit, provided you fold it enough. Heck, use a patterned beach towel. Remember what I said about looking dopey? Besides, that odor is a novel life form making its earthly debut in your rug. Towels are easier to wash.

Lockers are available in Warren bathrooms. Bring a lock if you're paranoid. Won't stop anyone from [edit: urinating] through the slats.

Bed, Bath, and Beyond can be found at the Landmark Center (Fenway train stop). To get there, simply climb the rape staircase next to ENG, cross Beacon, and walk a quarter block to the health clinic behind Fenway. I've never been, so I can't tell you their pickup system.

Oh, my, you are just so very welcome!

Regarding the address at Warren: your S will be assigned a Box #--- for example, John Doe, Box 999, 700 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. My S lived there for 2 years and the room number was never part of the address.

I'm very sorry, Kinshasa is right (as usual). I got myself mixed up. Your room and mailbox numbers are different when you live in Warren Towers.

be aware that with corner doubles there is not really a good place to put the tv so both roomates could watch. I was in 1415b last year and the tv was on my side of the room bc or else it would be too far away

In corner doubles, the desks are actually in the middle of the room, so you can't really put a bulletin board there. But I was in one of those rooms last year, and above one of the beds, there was a bulletin board.

I've actually got pictures of the room, which might make it easier to visualize

This is right as you walk into the door. Unlike regular doubles, which have their door in the middle of the room. These doubles have theirs on one side of the room. In the bottom right is the microfridge which we had up against the far right wall at the end of my roommate's bed. In the bottom left is my roommate's dresser.

This was me taking a picture, standing on my bed in the far left corner of the room. Around the corner where you see the dresser is the door. And above the bed is that bulletin board I was talking about. Kind of a strange place for one...
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060027-1.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060027-1.jpg</a></p>

On my roommates bed, pointing at the two closets and my dresser. I actually had a set of those 3-drawer things in my closet
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060025-1.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060025-1.jpg</a></p>

Standing in the other corner of my side
<a href="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060026-1.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v241/RadiantHeat/P1060026-1.jpg</a></p>

Hope that helps!

Should students bring printers into their dorms, or is it pretty much useless?

All of the computer labs have printers and students get a print quota each year ($50 and printing is like two cents a page when it's double sided or something). The Cummington St computer lab is 24 hours and is located right behind Warren Towers. I never had a printer on campus because I didn't need it.

And about the quota, if you exceed it, as long as your printing for academic reasons, theyll increase is. Easy as pie.

Thx for the pix, Heather. Yeah, I see that placing a TV in the room would be a challenge. Is the furniture movable in the corner doubles? Could that dresser be moved into the closet and a TV placed there instead, say on a big plastic three drawer thingie?
There looks like there's a small archway or some kind of molding separating one of the beds from the rest of the room. Is that just my old eyes playing tricks on me?

My thread! My poor thread! Hijacked!
Alright, seriously, thanks for the help, guys.

No. The furniture cannot be moved.

Yes. The wall juts out a wee bit.

@SpecialAgentPunk: You will not exceed your print quota, I promise you. So, sure, go ahead, print your textbook. The only trouble you'll get is from Mother Nature.

Oh, and not too many people realize that you can print remotely:

Nom, I have a question for you.

As a pre-dental student, I know I will have many long science classes to look forward. I have been considering psychology as major, but I'm wondering if that is a time-consuming major? I enjoy psych, but with all the intensive science classes I have to take to meet the pre-dental requirements (and science isn't my strong point), I don't want to have a tough major. So I was hoping you could tell me about psychology at BU.

en_fuego, check your private message box.

Your experience with the CGS stigma?
Any idea on marketing? I'm pretty sure I'm majoring in marketing. Any idea on difficulty, other SMG kids opinions/views since it's not one of the 'key' biz majors i.e. finance, accounting, etc.?

I know marketing is very well regarded at BU, so I'm not worried about that. Thanks!

Psych at BU is what you make of it--it can be challenging or something you kinda breeze through. For the most part, though, I would not consider it to be a time consuming major--at least compared to other majors and programs at BU.

"Any idea on marketing? I'm pretty sure I'm majoring in marketing. Any idea on difficulty, other SMG kids opinions/views since it's not one of the 'key' biz majors i.e. finance, accounting, etc.?"

I know that I'm repeating myself, but keep in mind that you're not majoring in marketing: you're majoring in business and concentrating in marketing. As a result, you'll be going through similar experiences with the rest of the school in the core areas of the program (SM121/2, Core, etc.), so I wouldn't say that your concentration is going to make a substantial enough difference for it to affect someone's "view" of you and your major (not that one should really consider that in the first place). I guess there may be some people who have silly views of marketing--but, there are also people who think that accountants just crunch numbers all day. The vast majority of the school concentrates in finance; however, marketing is extremely popular and there are some excellent professors and courses offered (at least when I was a student).

@ryanbis: I said the same about psychology. . . almost verbatim. The only thing I added was a comment on pre-dentistry. If s/he is uncomfortable with the sciences, s/he had best not not pursue the pre-dental path. This should be obvious.

do kids usually bring their laptops to class to take notes or do they just bring notebooks/binders?

Well, it depends on the class, as some just require you to print out powerpoint slides to bring to class. But from my experiences, most people just use notebooks.

Nom, I should have made myself clearer. I'm not "uncomfortable" with the scienes. Science is not my best subject, but I'm not bad at it either. Anyways, I don't feel like explaining myself, but thanks for your reply. Ryanbis, thanks for your response also.
