Hey guys, my gf attends UCR she wants to transfer to UCSD. She is currently a freshman. How hard is it to transfer between UCs? What grades must she maintain in order to possibly transfer. If transferring is not an option, is it at all possible to spend her next year at community college (this would be her soph year) and than transfer to UCSD? Is it significantly easier that way? Thanks

community college people definitely have priority for transferring [i believe 90% of transfers is from cc]. it's harder to transfer from an UC, but it's not impossible. she can spend her next year at cc if she would like and then transfer to UCSD. The gpa depends on what major, etc. On the website, it says the average gpa is at least 3.4. sorry, don't know much, but i hope it helped! good luck to your gf! :)

Thank you. What is the usual make up of a transfer from one UC to another? Also will it be looked down upon by admissions if she gets out of UCR after her freshman year, goes to community college for soph year and then transfers? Thanks

sorry, what do you mean by "make up of a transfer"

i don't think she'll be looked down upon by admissions; i know that a lot of people do this.

Transferring from UCR to UCSD is possible but is very difficult.

UCR is also said to be very tough on its freshmen class considering the fact that UCR drops more freshmen than any other UC.

By make up I mean like GPA, ECs, SAT, etc. She really didn't do too good this first quarter and she wants to be closer to home and feels like at UCSD she will do tremendously better. What GPA should she strive for in order to accepted as a soph at UCSD? Thanks

What GPA at UCR? 3.4+ would be my guess.

Alright thanks. I appreciate all of the info.

Well 3.5 is the average admit gpa to ucsd for transfers, and the large majority of those were coming from a ccc. Because the ccc transfers have priority, I would assume coming from another UC where you do not have any type of priority one would need a gpa slightly higher than the avg 3.5 to be on "even footing" with the rest of the applicants.

UCR --> CC --> UCSD ???? Are u trying to risk her life? wat if she doesn't get into UCSD after long years at CC? I personally think it's much better to stay in UCR and maintain GPA little above 3.0. Here is the stats I found in STATFINDER (These rates are only for UC-UCSD transfer!!!!!!)

GPA 2.80 - 2.99 (2007) 66.7 % admission
(2006) 62.2 % admission
GPA 3.00 - 3.19 (2007) 83.0 % admission
(2006) 71.2 % admission
GPA 3.20 - 3.39 (2007) 89.2 % admission
(2006) 87.0 % admission
GPA 3.40 - 3.59 (2007) 82.6 % admission
(2006) 74.5 % admission

GPA 3.80 - 4.00
3.60 - 3.79
Unknown (2007) 89.5 % admission

Yes, priority is given to CC, but it doesn't mean UCs will totally reject other 4-year-school transfers. They will always spare some spaces for others. Think about how many people in a UC will actually look for transfering to another UCs. The number of applicants from a UC is significantly lower than CC applicants.

i personally think ucr --> cc --> ucsd is a much better option. she can also sign TAG to guarantee her transfer, and again, it really depends on what major she's in. because some really competitive majors need higher gpas while others dont

Thank you for the data. She will defentiely be in that range. Is it possible to apply for a transfer right after her freshman year to UCSD and if she doesnt get into UCSD than just go the cc-->ucsd route?

well the application filing period for fall 09 just passed (it was in nov) sooo..yeah. ucsd only takes fall applicants, UNLESS you're doing the TAG from a cc, which lets you apply for winter too

So would it be fine if she got out of UCR right now, went to cc for winter, spring, summer and fall than apply for a winter transfer to UCSD? When is the deadline for a transfer through CC and TAG?

UCSD only takes fall applicants (filing period in nov), winter transfers are ONLY for people doing the TAG. then winter transfers' filing period is around june or july

I would not advise her to drop out of UCR to go to CC for 2 years then hope to get into UCSD.

Unless you plan on dumping her....lol

How bad did she do her first quarter? j/w. If she is struggling at UCR right now because of academic reasons, I would tell her to fight it out. UCSD will be a notch tougher than UCR so she needs to be able to handle UCR before transferring. Going to CC (an easy environment) will now allow her to learn as much, and there will be a significant gap between the CC coursework and the work at UCSD.

If on the other hand she is struggling at UCR because she is homesick, it is probably best for her to go to a CC, and then transfer into UCSD.

CC would be a lot easier to get a higher GPA. If she doesn't get into UCSD she can always apply back to UCR

I would give her a .001% chance of transferring from UCR to UCSD because of the budget cuts.

lol budget cuts, seriously
