Need ..... and more need!!

Middlebury is need-AWARE for international students. Why? Oh, why?

Because it's endowment isn't as high as those of other top LACs...
But, it's recognized as being the most generous in terms of offering admission to international applicants.

Oh! But then, I shouldn't be applying should I? I will be needing a full-ride of sorts.

full-ride? you prob won't get that

Horror! That's another wonderful college lost ....

Middlebury will meet 100% of the demonstrated need of every international students accepted.

really? but they have a $1800 student contribution or something which is impossible for me. and they said, they are need-aware in a reply to my fin-aid questions. what say?

"Need aware" and "need blind" are related to the admissions process, not the amount of aid you receive if accepted. Need blind colleges don't take your financial need into account when deciding whether or not to accept you. Need aware colleges do (i.e, you may be rejected simply because you require too much aid). Once admitted to Middlebury, the colllege meets 100% of every student's demonstrated need. There is no such thing as a free ride, so you may be expected to work to help finance your eduction (this may be where the $1,800 comes into play).

btw, Middlebury is need blind for international students "to the degree resources permit." Midd has a substancial amount of money for international students, and also has a much higher international student population than comparable schools (nearly 10% of Midd students are international).

You may be awarded full scholarship if middlebury decides to accept you.

ccfaithful...I highly doubt it will be "full"

Sure, it will be full.

for an intl??

Yes, for internationals.

cc, I think you're prob talking about "full" as in 100% met, which is great and stuff, but it isn't 100% "full-ride," which I understood as "full"

unless you practically make like nothing, you won't be getting a fully paid tuition

OK, then it's not.
I thought above 90% of total cost might be a full ride.

90% isn't "full"; to me @ least, 100%=full

also, it's all based on your EFC anyhow

Middlebury will meet 100% of your full demonstrated need as long as you apply for financial aid whether you are international or not. That does not meant they will pay for everything, it means that whatever need they determine you demonstrate, which they use some mathematical formula to figure out, they will cover and then will have you pay the rest. Midd tends to divide what you do have to pay between a parent contribution and a student contribution. The parent contribution takes care of most of the total but they will have you pay about 1,000 - 2,000 which they will encourage you to obtain an on-campus job for. The job will cover what you owe and that's how Midd and I think a great number of other small LAC's deal with financial aid.

Midd and all other top LAC's will give you the aid if you have been accepted. But the thing is you have to be bloody good to be accepted if you are an intl. student applying for aid bcoz all these colleges have limited amount of aid for intls. Basically the hard part is getting accepted but once you are accepted they will do their best to cover your demonstrated need.

Actually, Ryanshroff, I don't think that's accurate. Middlebury is one of the few LAC's that is need blind with international students (I believe). So I don't think they make it any harder for internationals.

midd is "sort of" need aware for international students. on paper, it's need blind for all students, but things change a little for internationals. the thing is, admissions decisions are need blind, but then your file goes to the financial services office. if they can give you financial aid using their funds or the donated scholarship funds, then you're accepted. if not, then you're rejected by the financial services office and hence, the admissions office.
it's true that the less financial aid you ask for, the more likely you're to end up at middlebury. yet again, there are international students who got full ride, and it's not impossible. and by full ride, i'm meaning 100%.
