There is something to be said that THIS dorm experience could have more merit than just living on campus in a random dorm. Is the Barretts dorm just for freshman?

“While I think it is ideal for kids to live on campus the first year, I would not pay for a dorm if my daughter was attending school that was 5 min from the house.” - I would, for the freshman year at least… unless dealing with the layoff situation.

The kid is perhaps already compromising to not take some options at pricier schools far from home. $9000 (plus fees, books etc) would not be a lot for a 4 year education, assuming a move home after Freshman year. But in the case of double-layoffs, I can understand how it would not be possible.

Maybe you could offer to pay for dorms when you both have jobs again?

Barrett Honors College had a brand new complex built two years ago. It is basically a residential college by itself. The dorms, faculty/advisor officies, class rooms, cafeteria, fitness center, etc. are all within the complex. It is a very nice setup. The Barrett dorm is not just for freshman but for the honors students.
