First time posting here, so if I’m doing anything wrong please let me know. I’m very lost and only have a little bit of a clue where I want to go. I guess I’ll just tell you everything. My GPA is a 3.3. I do a fair amount of honors, AP, and a bit of “college in the high school”. (New) SAT score is 1240 (I think that’s about 1740 on the old scale). I want to major in English because I love it but I have ZERO intention to become a teacher, in fact I was hoping to maybe go into publishing. I’m a Washington resident, and I would love to go to California but my options are pretty limited. Besides being on a budget (out of state tuition is crazy, but I can afford about 20k - 30k a year), I can’t get into a UC because minimum GPA for out of state residents is 3.4 so that isn’t an option. Debating Cal State Long Beach vs San Diego State but I’m not sure. Applied and accepted to University of Arizona, and I’m curious about ASU, but I’m not sure what english program is better. Lastly, I’m considering Boise State, but they are my last choice. Any advice or experience is welcome, especially from english majors and anyone who has attended or attends one of those universitys or maybe has a suggestion for a new one. Thanks!
CSULB and SDSU admit based on eligibility index and major.
(CSU GPA x 800) + (SAT Math + CR). Your eligibility index would be 3880. You are on the low side for both CSULB and SDSU.
For SDSU, you want an EI of 4100 to be competitive
For CSULB, an EI of 3900+ is competitive but not a definite guarantee.
Definitely worth an application but also include some other CSU’s if you want to come to California but even with the CSU’s you are looking close to $40K/year to attend which includes tuition/room/board/transportation/health insurance/books and other school related fees.
Thank you! Are there any other CSU’s you recommend?
You would have a good chance at all the CSU’s except for CSULB/SDSU/Cal Poly SLO. Cal State Fullerton and Sonoma State are known to have good English departments.
The following schools offer WUE rates to English majors. I don’t know anything in particular about them.
California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
California State University, Bakersfield
California State University, Channel Islands
California State University, Chico
California State University, East Bay
California State University, Sacramento
California State University, San Bernardino
California State University, San Marcos
California State University, Stanislaus
Humboldt State University
University of California-Merced
Good luck!
What is it about California that makes you want to come here so bad? Some of what you love about CA is probably not present in places like Merced, Stanislaus, Bakersfield, Sacramento.
Have gone to California numerous times over the course of my life, fell in love with San Diego as well as the general feeling of SoCal. It’s also so different from my home state and I feel like I would really thrive there.
Okay well I spent the first half of my life in so-cal and the second half in the sf-bay area and I’ve been all over. I understand the unique feeling of socal. I’m hoping to go back there for graduate school. I totally understand the desire to go there.
However, if you’re going to be paying OOS I highly suggest touring the inland places like bakersfield and merced before attending. I would definitely rather be in a Washington state university than any of the places inland.
Thank you for your help, I will see about touring those colleges and apply.

would still like help
This is key:
Are your parents willing to pay that? If not let us know. You need to run the Net Price Calculator on each school’s web site you listed and talk to your parents about what they are willing to pay. Right now your stats aren’t high enough to really merit much aid.
I second the above suggestion to investigate the WUE schools.
