Hello everyone :)

I am a rising senior (expected to graduate 2011-2012)
Originally, I planned on taking part in this internship at a fashion, entertainment, lifestyle magazine office. A friend who works there passed on my resume to the internship department and said that they should be contacting me soon.
BUT I have still not heard back from them and have a feeling I'm not getting anything.
So now I'm not sure what to do.
It's hard to find a job in my city and a lot of places aren't hiring.

I wanted to take dance classes (since I've been dancing for 14 years)
perhaps volunteering, as well...
but now i don't know what to do so that it would look great on my college application.

Please help! Any suggestions, ideas, or comments are appreciated :)

Definitely look for volunteering activities in your field or anything else that interests you. Colleges and future employers like to see experience and you can talk about experience gained from your volunteer activities, too. Last summer due to the fact that my son did a couple of music camps he wasn’t able to get a paying job for his off weeks. This year he is still doing a music camp but two of his volunteer activities from last summer have lead to paying jobs this summer. (Both paying more than minimum wage.) Also, because of his volunteer experience he was able to get two outside scholarships for college. In the long run, volunteering helps you and your community.

Hi collegebound48:

Don’t worry too much on the summer plan. I am also a rising senior, and am on the same boat with you. After all of my summer plans collapsed because of my visa issue, I decided to stay on campus to prepare for my GRE test in July. A good GRE score will definitely boost your college application. Good luck!

I’m in the exact same position also.

I think there’s still time to sign up for classes at your college or the local CC.

I am not sure where you live… .if you live in the NY/CT/NJ area, why not CALL/email the magazine offices(ELLE, Vogue, Mademoiselle) etc and ask for an internship… ask if you can volunteer! or an assistant of some sort… Do whatever you need to do to get your foot in the door! Many a heavy hitter in the fashion industry has started out as a grunt, doing coffee/dry cleaner runs::
