GCs do recieve calls if the kid is on borderline between def and rej. So uh, not everyone's GC gets a call. Unfortunately, I think that most kids who recieve the call end up not getting in ED or RD. :/

last year there was 5,507 high schools (http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/profile.php), i think they are only going to call the kids who are on the borderline. maybe they are calling the high schools where a lot of kids applied from, so that they can get a sense of what each student is like.

I doubt this is true. One, because it would be too much work. And second, the OP has made many mistakes/pretended like he was right when he actually wasn't, so I don't trust the OP at all.

I don't know about you guys... but my GC is contacting the admissions office for all the applicants this week and next... and I'm pretty sure he's got word for some ppl... he's been doing this for awhile and he knows some of the adcoms relatively well...

What is an OP?

original poster

ill ask my guidance counselor tomorrow, but i really doubt this is true...

All I know is I called up the regional rep for my region today and her assistant told me that they have not yet started making decisions as November scores haven't arrived (they arrive tomorrow electronically).

Maybe some GCs are making appointments themselves but I doubt that the admissions office has called them already to make appointments and what not.

my cg has been contacted year after year not just by penn but by other colleges as well. i do go to a private school though so that might not be the case everywhere.

(i'm not from this board, don't hate me...but...) when i was in hs, my guidance counselor said that this one school TOLD HIM that i would be wait listed. he relayed this to me after i didn't get in and he was very surprised that i wasn't waitlisted because that's what they had said to him. anyhow, i'm not at that school anyway.

so basically, yes i am totally sure that many schools make calls and bargain with counselors BUT they are not always sure things (evidently).

good luck you crazy Pennsylvanians :)

I'm going to post an email from my GC verbatim that proves to you that this is absolutely true. Now, like I said, it MAY NOT be the case for the entire applicant pool. It may be a private school thing, (i go to a Jesuit school in NorCal, btw) or for a school that has a connection with Penn (my school actually doesn't, on the contrary, we have little success for Penn, ~7/8applicants on average per year, only about 1 gets accepted, and in the past it's either athletes or just above average smart kids.

I understand that my OP sounds really dubious, but TRUST ME, my GC has worked at our school for decades and would never lie about this to me. And I know that a lot of the things I post on CC are perceived with skeptiscm by a lot of other people. But you guys have to realize that a lot of unknown, (and sometimes unfair) things happen within the UG Admissions office at ANY school. This could be one of them; even though it may not be applicable to all schools/students, it definitely happens. And there are a few people who've posted on this thread who back me up. Thanks guys :)

what my counsler said to me almost proves it for certain

rohan2k6... I go to a Jesuit private high school as well...

and not to offend anyone... it may just be a private school thing... I mean we pay like 20+K for tuition...

lol thats very possible. private schools offer have better affiliations with ivy's then small public schools like mine.

Wow! 20+K for highschool without boarding. Penn is like only 15K more without boarding.
Private school in America is expensive, I guess.

Do they take that in account when they make decisions? A person who pays 20,000 for private school VS.a public schooler who pays nothing?

I hope they don't because my parents can't afford to pay that much for just my schooling. They barely make double what he pays for school.

yea my school was private too

Wharton411: you are at no disadvantage at a public school, it's split btwn private, public, parochial and home schooled children. i mean you're at an advantage if your school has a great reputation but that could be public or private or parochial.
