NewsFlash: PENN WILL BEGIN MAKING CALLS NEXT WEEK!

I received some astonishing news today whilst at my Guidance Counselor’s office: Next week, the regional representativeS from Penn will be calling college counselors nationwide and goes over each applicant from that school and the decision that the board has reached. This allows the GC one last time to, “bargain” with them to woo the decision towards the applicant as favorably as possible. They also use this to help out students who are deferred/denied, for usually they flood into the counselors office after the decisions are posted in a quandary of why the committee took that particular action on their app. The RR, for instance, may say, “grades not as solid as could be,” or “SAT’s lower than average,” so it may help the deferrees boost their chances for the spring by improving on some things while there’s still time, like submitting mid year grades (as long as you haven’t let senioritis take its toll!) or possibly retake the SAT/sat iis in January, maybe inform them of more awards, send more essays, recs etc. This also sometimes gives deferred candidates a good estimate about what their realistic chances are in the second round, and if they need to rethink their college options before the big JAN 1 deadlines.

Of course, the GCS are under solemn oath not to repeat any of the information to anybody else until the applicants are notified. So, guys, our decisions will be ready much sooner than we think! It’s all just a matter of them stuffing everything into envelopes and posting them online that will take up several days worth of time…

for anybody else who may see this thread who’s applying EA to Notre Dame by any chance (which is me) they also do the same thing, in case you are wondering…

Will they call the GC's of all students who applied?

now THAT i'm not sure...but my HS is getting a call and they usually only send >1 student to penn per year, we are by no means a feeder school and are located in California...so I would say yes

So basically our college counselors will know whether or not we got accepted or rejected a week before we do?

I doubt what you're saying is true. I don't think the regional rep has the time, or wants to be bothered calling all the schools in his/her area.

its true in my school. ive known for months that my cg would find out a week b4 me.

So does this mean they are done making decisions?

I actually got the same news from my GC... he's setting up an appointment for this week or next I think...

This sounds a little far-fetched, unless they'll only call the students who are borderline...

-The Far-Fetched Coot66

I guarantee you that this is true. And yes, it's probably for people on the borderline

I'm assuming that the Regional Reps. WON'T call if you got accepted!

By the way, has this procedure ever been done before or is this like the first year? Because that is pretty cool that they actually call the GC and discuss the applicant, so the applicant gets a better view of where they stand.
I guess I'll ask my GC to find out if she got a call. If she didn't, then I possibly got accepted.

This 100% BLATANTLY false. Let's consider a few things. 1) That would be way too many guidance counselors to call and speak with. We're talking several minutes each with thousands of counselors. College reps do not waste their time doing this. This MAY happen in extremely rare cases, but I even doubt that. 2) College counselors do NOT know ahead of time at all because they do not need to know ahead of time. Why would that provide help? Colleges who are rejecting early applicants can care less about whether or not they can help students improve their apps for other schools. Even moreover, it just doesn't make sense. Guidance counselors "wooing" regional reps. I don't think so. Let's say you're right and a guidance counselor does "woo" the rep and he/she agrees to change their mind. What would the rep then do? Reps do not have enough power to just completely change a decision. That is for the committee to decide. Therefore, reps would have to reconvene with a committee for any changes to be made. This process of calling counselors is false.

yea I asked the head of our guidance dept today and she said that this was absolutely untrue.

haha, woah! Who is right and who is wrong? Well, lbw2 makes a couple of GREAT points! But I don't understand why rohan2k6 would lie or his GC lie to him? I don't get it...

i kinda believe the refutation than the op. he makes good points. That would be soooooo many gcs in sooooo little time. just unreasonable. it would be a great idea if they had lets say an extra month or so. but they don't

I don't know who or what to believe. The OP is pretty credible. He is not one of those trolls on the forums. But it is almost impossible for the rep to contact all the couselors. I think I will go talk to couselor tomorrow. He is a new guy, so he might not be familiar.
Our head GC is not the greatest. He gave me completely wrong info on how to send my college transcript. Lucky I did not listen to him and went to the college to get it directly. So they are not always credible.

i'm pretty sure this happens for private schools, especially the elite ones. i haven't heard about it happening at public schools, but i think it would be too time-consuming a task...

yo rohan2k6, what kind of school do you go to and how credible do you think your GC is? Anybody want to call their regional rep. to find out if what he is saying is true?

it does not happen anywhere

My counselr has been doing this for over 20 years. We had a speech about this today because it is not true. In fact, he said that when we find out, we should tell him so that they can record it as soon as possible.
