I applied ED to wharton. my guidance counselor/mentor told me that penn called him last week to ask questions. they asked if this semester’s grades are available yet, and how i’m doing in school in my senior year. luckily, my school doesn’t send out marking period grades to ED colleges.

i’m really worried now. last year, someone on CC got the same call to their counselor, and in the end the kid got deferred. he said that the reason Penn calls your GC is because you’re on the borderline, and they’re deciding whether to defer you or reject you =/

on the bright side.. at least youre on the borderline and not below it..

i wouldve liked to know if penn even knew i existed / was considering me.. that wouldve made me pretty happy.. sort of.. plus i did reasonably well 1Q

yea, i've heard that means you're on the edge. but that's good, right? that means they're thinking of you. i wonder if mine has gotten a call... doubtful i guess saying as i'm sure they saw my old grades and started laughing.

your GC actually told you Penn called? wow, I wish my unhelpful public school GC's told us that sort of info so we're not shocked on Dec 14th ;)

I would guess that it's potentially good, not bad news. I mean they could've always deferred you without calling the GC and asked for midterm grades later. I think it's more likely that you are on the edge between accepted and deferred and that's why they called. Maybe the person you saw on last year's thread was also borderline accepted, but ended up deferred for whatever reason.

Also, are you sure your school is unwilling to send out quarter grades? Usually schools won't do it unless they are asked. I'd follow up, and give your school permission to do that. If they won't, I'd fax over a copy of your report card.

chlor--what is your GPA like? and how has it been the previous three years of high school? if it's not steady or consistent grades, then it may be that they called you to verify their predictions for your senior year. also, if you are currently taking a ton of hard AP classes, they also may want to see how you are doing in those classes to see if you can handle the coarse load

i dunno. that happened to me last year as well as to the other person who applied ed to penn last yr from my hs. as many have said, it might mean that you are borderline and if you did decent first quarter, then it can only help you. also, are you taking a lot of ap classes this year/more than compared to your previous hs years? if that is the case, they probably justed wanted to see how you have adjusted to the curriculum. no one really knows for sure why they call and what it means but if it makes you feel any better, i turned out ok and the other person from my hs is now in the huntsman program. don't fret about it.

I'm scared about getting a call. I have those sorts of grades (3.3, 3.6, 3.9) and am taking 6 AP's this year. I have 89's right now in 2 classes plus in 85 in a 3rd class (but a test is supposed to be dropped in that one so that'd be like a 94 w/ the test dropped).

Anyway, that freaks me out. I feel good about getting all A's by semester's end (or at least close), but if they call now it looks like I have B's in almost everything...

my teachers grade weird, so in physics I'll have a D or F for a few weeks until he inputs my grades, then I'll have a B+/A- again. Would they call my GC? Would he say "yeah, he has an F in physics" or could he just say, "the only officially recorded grade he has is an A"?

hmmm...well a few weeks ago my gc was like all intense about me applying to all these other schools because she said she had no clue about my chances...this week shes like hold off on some of the other applications, im confident and will be really surprised if you dont get in...could she have gotten a call?? i didn't really ever consider it, but her change in attitude did seem strange...whatevs, we'll know for sure in 9 days!!!

haha i have a C- in AP physics.. and you know the sad part?

since this teacher took over.. barely anyone has ever gotten an A/A- in that class.. and he scales the tests (sq. rt) and then scales up the final quarter grade (sq. rt again) .. and still we only end up with Bs.. ugh.. i inherited my brothers textbook in that class (i dont think my teacher realized he did this.. but all the same.. its kind of creepy) and he got basically a 5 in everything.. goes to cornell engineering.. yet he still only got a 1 on the physics exam.. so i inherited that 1 before i even started the class...
