Bump … Any word when NMF rejection letters went out/go out for the Class of 2013? Based on last year’s posts, I assume it would be right around now. Thanks.

Do National Achievement letter go out about the same time, or are they delayed, like the applications are?

Person at NMSC told me on phone this morning that SOME letters have gone out already. She claimed that rejection letters are mailed throughout month of Jan. Don’t know if this is true. Posts here from previous years indicate that all letters mailed the same day??

This whole process has had me stressed out forever! My S has a couple of C’s freshman year…a 78 and a 79 for semester…does it matter how high the C’s were, or is it a straight GPA? Also, we have a doctor’s diagnosis of depression from that time period…would that help if we have to appeal?

Unweighted GPA = 3.30, weighted (6.0 scale) = 4.41 and his rank is 66 out of 386.

It seems 2 Cs are usually not a problem. It is probably just a school without grade inflation, considering his GPA and class rank. There have been examples of kids earning as many as 4 Cs and making it.

thanks yofaith - I knew I had seen a schedule somewhere. One more week! Just in time for midterms.

Yikes, according to http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/11911695-post87.html, the rejection letters could arrive as late as the 22nd of January (at least for Florida).

Rejected… I’m slightly angry but mostly confused. Here are my stats:

SAT: 2290 superscore (800 W, 770 M, 720 CR; took it twice)
unweighted GPA: 3.55
weighted GPA: 3.85
Class rank: school doesn’t rank but my counselor said top 20%, out of class of 1300 (school has >4500 students)

Leadership: Orchestra (250 members) Council President, Science Olympiad vice president, Yearbook editor

Honors: Harvey Award (Indiana) for photojournalism and journalism, Anatomy and Physiology departmental award, numerous awards for placing in Science Olympiad, excellent Junior String award for orchestra

I also had an excellent essay, but my GC recommendation was probably not stellar because she’s not a big fan of me and my school has 4500 students, so GCs do not get to know their students.

I got one D in sophomore in Honors Algebra II, but I took it again (regular, not honors) and got an A. This was the time my parents were (very unexpectedly) getting divorced, and I mentioned this in my application.

I’m definitely appealing this decision. My school refuses to drop grades even if you retake the class, which is why the D is still on my transcript. The only other bad grade is a C+ in AP European History also sophomore year. How do you think my chances are for the appeal? :(

shakeandshine - when did you receive the letter? Sorry to hear the news - your stats and ECs look really good to me!

I received the letter today, but it may have came yesterday. I live in central Indiana, so it probably didn’t take more than two days to get to me.

I’m mostly worried because the school that I really want to go to (Baylor) offers full-tuition scholarships for all Finalists. I have to essentially get a full ride to even consider any school because of my financial situation. My parents are contributing a maximum of $15,000 (Dad $10,000, Mom $5000 - big financial strain on both of them) and both are reluctant to pay even that.

S&S, your situation sounds really similar to mine, probably also to many other NMSFs. Stuff happens in life, and not every school readily gives As for good work. You are probably just the first to report the bad news here. Many of us are dreading next week’s snail mail.

s&s Your GC will probably have to initiate the appeal. m2ck can probably give you more details on the procedure. In addition to the D how many Cs?

Just the one C in AP European History during sophomore year.

Shake and Shine…did you apply to any other schools that give full tuition scholarships for your stats or for your NMSF status?

In other words, did you apply to ANY financial safeties since finances are so important for you?

What was the D? Was it a one semester grade? Of did you get D’s for both semesters?

I applied to Purdue (in-state, public) as well as Case Western (I know this is an affordable option because my sister is there and she got plenty of need-based aid).

The D was just one semester and I retook it to be eligible for the Academic Honors Diploma (I was also under the impression that the D would not be on my transcript since I wouldn’t be getting credit for it and it wouldn’t be factored into my GPA).

DS hasn’t received a letter, grades are stellar but SAT was not a great a he’d hoped. Does that play a huge part in becoming a finalist? He’d retaking it in 2 weeks, just for his own satisfaction.

Depends on exactly what you mean by “not great”. Need a score of 2000 or higher is the usual thought. It does not have to match your PSAT score.

I was under the impression that all that was needed was the 1960 qualifying score and then the SAT didn’t factor into the decision process.

I was just rounding as I didn’t have time to look up the “exact” qualifying- and also, I am not sure if anyone knows if it is exact or it changes from year to year. I just know that I have always heard if everything else is good (grades, discipline, essay), that around 2000 is good enough. Some people seem to be concerned because they had a 223 on the PSAT and think that they have to get 2230 to “verify” and that is not the case.
