NMF rejection letters go out very soon...heads up!

Hehe, I was being deceptive. No letter today. :)

I am doing duel-enrollment full time and will be graduating with an AA, so my only concern would be rigor of schedule or something to that effect.

I have a 4.0/2340 so I should be safe, thankfully.

This year I never did find the WI full state list, but we had 1 homeschooled out of 82 NMSF in our county (Dane.) [82 high school seniors in Dane County named National Merit Semifinalists : Wsj](http://host.madison.com/news/local/education/local_schools/high-school-seniors-in-dane-county-named-national-merit-semifinalists/article_994e97e4-fc6b-11e1-9341-001a4bcf887a.html)

Statewide it’s a bit different picture. The previous year there were at least 17, I’m scanning fast so maybe miscounted out of over 300.

My son is also in WI (or was when taking the PSAT at least) so if you do ever find the list I’d appreciate it if you posted it here! I also was unsuccessful on a quick search.

Yes, we received the rejection letter on Jan 15th. My daughter had only one C from Sophmore year, the rest As and Bs. Her SAT was 2190. NMSC seemed to indicate that it was the C that they had the problem with.

bhs2013 - So sorry for your D. I hope you think about an appeal. Her situation sounds similar to our D. She got 1 C in junior year, 224 PSAT, 2180 SAT. We haven’t received a rejection letter yet, but dreading the mailbox check every day this week. What was the postmark on her letter? Your state? Based on the “1 C” posts this year on CC, we have already contacted her GC about an appeal in case we get a rejection letter if it is based on a single C, especially since there are extenuating circumstances (brand new Pre-Calc teacher, brilliant but a poor teacher, all kids with this teacher did poorly, administartion asked teacher to resign during 3rd quarter, grades went up after that but still got a C overall). D is going to Alabama so she will benefit as a NMSF, but the finalist status gets her some more nice benefits.

So, are we reasonably safe if we haven’t received a rejection letter yet?

Just wait four more days for the 22nd :p

Does anyone know if National Merit requires an updated mid year transcript?
Maybe that is why they wait until Feb to announce the finalists.

I know an appeal requires an updated transcript… :(

What happens on the 22nd?

I don’t think NM requires midyear transcripts for most students. As I’d said earlier though, my son is now in college and they did require his.

The 22nd seems to be the last day anyone received a rejection letter last year.

Very cool!

No, and if it did, it would take longer than Feb to process 15,000 transcripts coming from from everywhere. Some school districts don’t end their first semester til the end of January.

TXArchitect: oh ok thanks!

Does anyone know if the schools have already been notified of their students who weren’t selected as Finalists?

Post #84 in this thread indicates principals should have gotten finalist lists last Friday, Jan 18, and that students will be notified directly by Friday, Jan 25. I wonder if they try to time a snail mail to reach homes on that date? I wasn’t nervous about this one bit until I read this thread. Ugh, and thanks for specific info, all!

Here’s the link from #84. Scroll to the bottom for dates.

That’s for National Achievement.

It’s January 31st according to https://osa.nationalmerit.org/application/competitionInstructionPDF.html?fileName=Requirements%20and%20Instructions%20for%20Semifinalists%20in%20the%202013%20National%20Merit%20Scholarship%20Program.pdf&programId=10001</a></p>

Agree that I’ve be Ed heard of college board asking for additional transcripts.

We too received a rejection letter with a 223 , 2290 35 ACT but 2 semester C’s (documented medical reason Junior year.) TONS of EC’s and presidential service award all 4 years. Not sure if we will appeal or not.

I am completely disgusted with the system right now. I have a Freshman that also tests well and is in the top 2% of his class that I am seriously considering counseling NOT to take AP and honors classes. Several of the schools my senior applied to will not accept AP credit, and do not use weighted grades. It makes me think I should let my kids be kids and have a little more fun rather than doing college level work in high school that they will receive little to no benefit from. I understand they have to draw a line somewhere, but again…where is the incentive?
