No Alumni Interview, Is My App Already in the Recycling Bin?

So:

I attend a very competitive public school which pretty consistently sends students to Ivies, Little Ivies, and pseudo Ivies (Duke, JHU, etc) and I am one of several qualified applicants seeking early admission to Yale (which is just a stones throw from my town). However, I believe that I am the only individual who has not been contacted for an Alumni Interview. While I did have an on-campus interview, so did some of my classmates who have already had their AI. What should I make of this? I've been checking my email obsessively for weeks and searching all my inboxes to make sure I didn't delete it. Am I already in the recycling bin? Perhaps my app's just that good (joking here)? 2 weeks 1 day; I am already peeing myself. GO BULLDOGS!

If you had an on- campus interview, you are low priority for an alumni interview, and I have spoken to locals who had the same experience as you in years past. In any case, interviews rarely play a role in admissions decisions, and then most often only if you act like a complete jerk. Having no interview does not count against you in admissions. So no, wouldn’t worry… at least, any more than you were planning to anyway. :)

yeah I agree, if you’ve already had an on-campus interview then don’t sweat it.

what do you guys make of those individuals who have had both an on-campus and an off campus interview? The girl I am thinking of is a friend of mind and apparently “bombed” (her words) her on campus, so perhaps admissions wanted to give her a second chance? I know there’s no real point in trying to logic it out, now, but it keeps me occupied. T-HANKS!

Sometimes alums are asked how many interviews they can do. Let’s say there are 5 alums doing interviews in your area. Person one says she can do 3 interviews, person 2 and person 3 can do 4 interviews, and person 4 and person 5 can do 1 interview. That’s 13 interview slots. It’s possible that there are not enough interviewers to go around. I wouldn’t worry about it.

I applied Early, didn’t get an alumni interview, was deferred, received an interview after being deferred and then I was accepted.

lol

dat anecdote

Your App might Already be in the Recycling Bin but it’s not b/c you were or weren’t contacted for an interview.

Very few on-campus interviewees get a 2nd interview slot from the very busy and over subscribed alumni volunteers.

On further thought: your app materials are DEFINITELY in the recycle bin. Yale scans all documents and shreds them. They operate fully on electronic files.

^ T26E4 hahahaha love this response…

to the OP, honestly though, don’t stress! there are millions of reasons why you may not have gotten an interview… Don’t be discouraged until april when you’re rejected!

What does it mean if I received both if I really connected with the first interviewer (I definitely did not ‘bomb’ it like some other people are suggesting). Does that mean that they looked at my application and did not immediately reject it?

You are overthinking it bleu. They don’t pre-sort your app before sending it to the area alumni interviewing group. You might have zero chance or are already in – but the local group doesn’t know that.

“What does it mean if…”
You’re trying too hard to discern any plus/minus from your situation. Nothing you’ve shared means anything besides congrats on having two nice interviews.
