No Summer and smaller admissions

No summer school at UF? - News - GainesvilleSun.com

Guess there is $16 million shortfall, so they may cut summer and/or smaller 2012 class. My S was planning to stay this summer and take classes, this will put a monkey in his plans.

If the elimination of the summer term falls through I will be livid

It looks like it will be even harder to get into UF with no summer option and fewer admitted.

6,600 students in the incoming classes is way to high as it is.

I will be happy if we can reduce the incoming classes by a few hundred each year. UF really needs to focus on raising Graduate enrollment.

wow, no summer? hard to imagine

and I think you should edit your post vincanity :P

now the budget is short, i cant really blame BM, but lets hope he does not actually cut admissions and eliminate summer school, cuz summer school could help more students graduate, thus lessen students

also The Independent Florida Alligator: News - Machen’s salary hiked up
How about he not take a salary hike and do whats best for the students, and i thought he raised like milions more than any other presidents did, then use those money.

i think if he does decides to do wat he says (i never heard of uf without summer terms), we will see alot more complainin, and BM's end will be near

apparently summer school is a good way to get assimilated to UF before Fall. this would suck.

honestly though, this justs sounds like a scare tactic

yes johnnytremain, i live in gville and i dont know a single uf student who doesnt like uf b/c its too big.
ppl want to go to public schools for the amount of diversity and students, so they would have a good college experience and meet many new ppl.
ur probly one of those kids who doesnt have any friend in college, but thats ur issue. if u want uf to limit its student, u better get ur POS to a private school

My son was hoping to stay in Gville and work/volunteer in a lab or at hospital, continue tutoring, and get ahead a little by taking a class or two. :( Hopefully, it is a scare tactic.

i really hope it is

Do you really think they can shut down the biggest state university in Florida for the Summer? Besides, the name of the town is Gainesville, not Deadsville. I think more than enough people will complain.

Can you imagine the uproar if they cancelled summer classes? Oh my god. I need to take summer classes for my major so I can graduate. There's no way in hell I'm staying at UF longer than I have to! I want to graduate on time!

they aren't cancelling summer classes...just aren't offering as many as were available in the past

Bkane

i understand your frustration over the potential for reduced enrollment and the spillover effect of a more competitive environment to gain admission.

However, I think you are being a bit hard on ssobick here because.

What this all gets down to (like so many things in life) is money.

UF, the state of florida and the state university system is going through a bit of a financial squeeze. Most of this stems from economic conditions not only in florida but throughout the country.

So the question you should really be asking yourself is ..... If I were president of UF, what would I do to increase revenue to the school so I don't have to cut programs and enroillment?

In my opinion, this is where the focus needs to be. For example, if UF were to say to you that they were not only not going to cancel the summer program but expand it, hire more teachers, build more dorms, build more classrooms and increase enrollment..... how would you feel? I would guess happy.

But if they then said to you, that in order to do all of these things, they would need to eliminate bright futures scholarships and raise in state tuition to $10,000 per year.... How then would you feel?

I think you get my point. I think ssobick only has UF's best interests at heart. ssobick is not trying to deny you access to UF, but rather make UF the best it can be.

BKane, I know you will most likely blast me for this as well, but that's ok. I hope you get in to UF and I wish you well.

Bright Futures doesn't cover summer classes, so it would seem reducing them would end up costing the state money at some level.

and if u read carefully BM even considered about canceling this semester

bkane...I'm almost positive he wasn't going to cancel the semester. That's ridiculous. And I did read it carefully. I read it as an exaggeration of the fiscal problems.

"and also its been 4 years since BM has been the president, but the only improvement we see r funding and athletics, we still dont see any impact on those funding, who knows where the money is."
You said the improvements are in funding and athletics, but there is no impact on funding? That makes no sense. Pretty sure UF wants students who can form coherent sentences. If you seem to dislike the way it is run so much, why'd you even bother applying there?

bkane... what is your deal?

Bkane, though you may be right, you completely made a fool of yourself by using the following:

"Collegefag"
"ur probly one of those kids who doesnt have any friend in college, but thats ur issue. if u want uf to limit its student, u better get ur POS to a private school"

go ahead prove your point but there is no need to trash talk or you will just get more trash talk in return.
