Nola Orientation Experience

skiermom95 - this may seem like a silly question, but do we have to pay fedex to ship the boxes or not? I called fedex to inquire about pick up/ drop off, and they said that if we have pre-printed labels w/bar codes, that we don’t have to pay anything extra - did the school already allow for this charge or am I way off base? Anybody want to chime in???

I thought it sounded too good to be true - the guy I spoke to originally at Fedex did not realize that these were school issued labels w/no fedex markings on them at all. I called back and spoke to someone else. Of course we have to pay! Any idea how much a box costs? I realize that weight, and ground vs. express are factors but on average?

Hi Bloomy - I shipped a 30 lb box that was 24" by 24" by 16" by Fed Ex. It was $79. We live just outside Washington, D.C. I figured it was worth it since I was able to send all of
S’s linens, towels and toiletries - enough to get him started for NOLA experience. He will fly down with 1 suitcase and a backpack. We’ll take the rest of his stuff for move-in and then buy whatever else he needs once we get there.

We shipped two boxes from Rochester NY 25 and 30 lbs total of $89. They’re set to arrive on Wednesday. I thought that was reasonable. But we wanted to send the tracking numbers to the Tulane provided shipping log. We may send another box for regular move-in.

I’m considering not sending anything in advance. He can take a set of sheets and a couple of towels down with him along with toiletries and anything else he needs for those 5 days. (thanks Vitrac for talking me off the ledge on this one).

Everything else I’m going to order from BBB and pick up down there after I arrive on Thursday.

Since we’re flying from Maine, I’ll be sending a box or two of XBox, clothes & bedding. Everything else we will buy when we get there. DS is taking a “vacation” to Florida 8/19 - 23. Because kids need a vacation from summer vacation before starting college. He’ll just take a carry on to Florida. I am flying Southwest on 8/23 so I will pack two big suitcases full of mostly his stuff.

Wow, shipping sounds expensive! Perhaps we’ll just load up our rental van and schlep instead of shipping.

For anyone driving in for the NOLA Experience on Monday, parking services said to stop by campus police in the Diboll Complex to pick up a permit.
This is for Monday, the move in weekend pass can be printed down online through this link: https://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/housing/under/upload/2013-Move-in-parking-permit.pdf
