Northeastern University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2023 Admission

My son was actually accepted off the waitlist last year. He was offered NUin for Scotland or Oakland. He was originally deferred ea and waitlisted rd.

My son was accepted Northeastern, London as well. A bit of a surprise. On the common app, he checked that he was open to going for a semester, but not 4 years. The acceptance letter doesn’t really explain many details.

Same situation for my son. Accepted to Northeastern, London. The letter seems to leave out some critical details like if this is an offer for a degree from Northeaster, London or a study abroad opportunity for year 1. From googling and comments, sounds like it’s 3 years in London, with a UK degree, however, they should really make it more clear in the offer letter. On the common app, he checked that he was open to going to London for a year, but not 4.

Three years in London to earn a UK bachelor’s degree and one year in Boston to earn a US bachelor’s degree. The fourth year in Boston is optional as a UK bachelor’s degree is recognized in the US.

Note that if you are planning on medical school do not do London as medical schools require that prereqs must be done in a US or Canadian university.

Forgot about that. Some on the waitlist were offered NU IN. No one was offered Boston campus last year.

My son no longer sees his deferral letter on his iPhone or laptop. He wanted me to see the wording but poof-it’s gone.

the same thing happened to me once I selected them to consider me for ed2, i don’t know what to do.

I’m hoping my son didn’t select ED2! Lol. He did mention wanting to write a “why northeastern letter” and submit mid year grades (which I assume was suggested in the letter?) Just strange it’s totally gone.

Same. High stats. Deferred.

They are need aware and we can’t pay $320,000 for four years so on to the next!

Three years to a degree is a built-in 25% off the price versus a U.S. degree (assuming you don’t do the fourth year second degree)! And did someone here mention that the cost of attendance is lower for NU London?

Edited to add: I looked it up and tuition in London is approximately $26K/year (more for Business and CS degrees) versus more than $60k/year for the Boston campus. Even if housing/food is more, that’s a significantly lower cost for a Northeastern degree. Unless I’m missing something, I would jump on that offer if it was compatible with my D’s major!

If that is the case then why not apply to a proper UK university and get a proper 3 year UK degree. UCAS is a lot simpler app to apply through to UK directly like Univ of Edinburgh. That is also far less expensive than US counterparts. Just because NEU buys a local college and brands it, doesn’t make it better than other UK universities. In fact I would say going to a UK univ is a far better global experience than what NEU is doing. If one wants to work in UK, folks know that NEU UK is just not the same as the local names.

Is there anyone who checked the box for NU In or Global Scholars and was deferred?

I got accepted into the Boston campus yesterday for the explore program

Stats:
6 APs (three this year, submitted 5 in APUSH and 4 in WHAP), 10 honors (one this year)
8/129, 98.64 W (that’s how my school gives it and idk how to convert), Test Optional
EC: Policy Debate is my strongest (4 years and varsity), 5 other clubs, 3 honor societies
Paid job since October 2021 to present, worked full-time during the summer of 2022, went to selective 4 day work shop at Rutgers
Solid essay and recs I think?

Hope I did that right!! Congrats to everyone accepted and good luck to all those deferred!

Certainly attending UK universities is also an option. I’ve known plenty of students who have gone to St. Andrews, and Trinity in Ireland (not UK) is a big recruiter at my daughter’s high school here in Baltimore, but beyond a handful of names of universities, I don’t think the average recruiter in the U.S. is very familiar with schools in the UK. Because the Northeastern brand recognition has shot up here in the U.S., I believe that would present students with the best of both worlds: a UK college experience, a Northeastern degree at probably 1/3 the full price in Boston, and employers recognizing who issued the degree when they come back home after college.

But again, it may not be for everyone. I’m just presenting the thought process that I would go through if my student had this option - which she does not.

Although Northeastern London is an English university, being a part of Northeastern University will bring a definite American mindset to the institution. A strong career focus being one thing.

How dumb. They’d be lucky to have you. Northeastern annoys me so much.

Deferred also, going RD. This whole process has been a bit off-putting. It seems like through their ambition to be the biggest and “best” they have grown themselves bigger than they have the infrastructure to handle well at this time. It all feels very impersonal. If anyone has the wording of the deferral letter please share, I am unsure what they are asking for since the letter disappeared.

I agree. I know that NE has become popular but I think their admissions process is lacking under the stress of so many applicants. From what I’ve read here, students being offered ED when they already applied EA. Students being offered other campuses when they did not choose them and which are not the Boston experience. Being offered a campus that does not have your major? These students have worked very hard in school and in the application process. My older son was accepted in 2019, did not attend, but I doubt my high school junior will be applying here next year.
