Northwestern HPME Part 1

What are you all planning on majoring in?
Personally, I'm probably doing Econ & Psychology Double major -- Double majors are feasible with the 3 yrs ugrad yeah?

i thought usually double majors are related like biology and biochemistry or like physics and math or somethin, not somethin that different like psych and econ but i guess i dono

You can double major in anything basically. That's why it's called double major (double = 2 and major = anything).

double majors are usually related just because classes overlap, i think. you can def double major in basically anything. is there enough time to do that in 3 years tho?

maybe if you take summer classes

You can double major in anything. One of my classmates did chemE and music. In terms of this, quarter system does help a lot. It's easier if they are related and share the same basic courses. I don't think you can double-count the "core" courses however. Double-majoring in 3 years would likely mean you have to take 5 classes in some, if not most, quarters. It's doable but hard.

So, did anyone hear anything else from the HPME office, i didn't. I heard we were going to get more info in May/June right?

nothing here

I am a sophomore in high school and I am very interested in Northwestern HPME. I would like to ask a few questions.

Is it better to take the SAT II: Biology or the SAT II: Chemistry?
How many hours of hospital volunteering is enough?

I would also appreciate any information about EMT training for high school students. Everything I found had the minimum age requirement age of 18 and you needed a high school diploma.

Congratulations to everyone for your admissions to such great schools. I thank you very much for your help and I appreciate it very much.

definitely SATII Chem because that is required for the HPME program

There is no cutoff point in regards to hours of volunteer work. Admitted students range from 24 hours to 100+ hours...just get some experience!

Yeah, most EMT training programs have a minimum age limit of 18. If you're looking to get training just for HPME, don't worry about it, you don't need it!

If you need more information about the HPME program, check out their website: http://www.medschool.northwestern.edu/hpme/

Good luck!

I asked this earlier....

Anyone participating in the USS summer workshop at NU???
I know one hpmer who is, other than myself.

Thank You for your help neo.

I hit this page while surfing and was amazed to see so much discussion about my alma mater. I graduated the HPME program in 1991 (it was a six-year program back then). We had a fantastic HPME and medical school class; I can hoinestly say that I had more fun in medical school than in college.

I loved the program and was pleased to see that it still attracts so many talented students. Perhaps the one thing I can offer everyone who posted to this page is that each of you has more than enough smarts to gain admission to any number of excellent medical schools. I'm impressed by the depth of planning that is going into your admissions process. Don't forget to enjoy your education, and to let your experiences guide you- a few people in each class discover that medicine is not for them, which is fine. You will achieve the most, and be happiest, in a profession that holds your interest. In my case, that choice was for surgery, but many of my friends are just as happy in internal medicine, dermatology, radiology, etc.

It's also worth remembering the words of a very elderly doc who taught one of my first clinical rotations, "Always remember that your family is the most important thing in life. Nothing else means a good goddamn." He was absolutely right. Best of luck to all of you.

If you have below a 1550 you might as well give up.

Why do you say that? According to the data in the Official Medical School Admission Requierments from the AAMC, the average SAT of an admit to the HPME is abouv 1540.

i got a 2320 on the new sat..is that too low? I got a 1590 M+V but a 730 W...if it was the old SAT I would retake writing only but now I can't so would the HPME admissions understand that?

Thanks for the post geraghty.

well i had a 1520 on my sat's and i got in. i'm pretty sure once you're in the 1500 range, the actual score is not an issue.

i had a 1500 and got in.. don't be dismayed or discouraged b/c of the 1540 avg.. i was but I wanted to try my luck anyways, and my desire to enter a ba/md program was too great to not apply... i would encourage anyone who really wants hpme to apply, regardless if you don't have a >1540 or 2300 or w/e...

hey
i'm a junior (now senior i guess) and it's finally hit me that i need to start filling out college apps. it's pretty late i know. i was wondering if i should even apply to nu hpme. it seems (from what i've read on this thread) that the competition's tough and everyone's just amazing. i guess i don't feel that i compare. dyou think i should even apply?

sat - 1530 (old) 2210 (new) - will be taking again since i decided to take it at the last moment as a stand by
sat2 - math 800 chem 780 bio 730
gpa - 3.79 uw - eh..not good
ap - calcbc 5 chem 5 (bio, comp sci, and micro senior year) - not a lot but my school doesnt have any humanities ap's

summer internships at polytechnic and columbia
a lot of math competition awards (amc, aime, mandelbrot, etc)
usabo semifinalist
some awards at local science fair
national honors society, french honors society, mu alpha theta (secretary), string quartet (leader), regional orchestra, all-state orchestra, new york youth symphony, varsity debate (best speaker award, 5th place team in league), math team (co-pres)
volunteering 180ish hours (summer camp for disabled children, church orchestra, playing at various nursing homes, habitat for humanity functions, etc)
started volunteering as an emt this summer

nothing really stands out i guess. i really like the concept of being guaranteed a spot at medical school because i go to a really competitive science magnet school and it's stressful being so grade conscious. and my school's kind of known to have a lot of backstabbing people. if you don't think i'll have a chance at hpme, can you suggest some other programs like it that i should consider? thanks a lot!
