Northwestern HPME Part 1

hey all! i've been following collegeconfidential for a while, but since it's junior year summer, i figure its time that i actually started participating! =b

wish i could comment about your stats, hi123, especially since mine are generally in the same ballpark, but i don't think i know enough to give an accurate take on them..

mistaippa: did you go to cty lancaster, 2nd session?

Hey Tasha, i did go second session... dag small world huh...
ya but let me know how everything's going for u and if i can help you in any way, drop me a line on aim, mistaippa is my sn

lol, yeah small world. i actually lived in the same hall as one if the girls who was interested in you! i think my team (huckers!!) played u in ultimate too.. hahah. anyway, i live in singapore now nd i don't really use aim... but i'll remember your sn if i ever do? thanks =)

i think i just need an opinion about what my chances are and which programs i should apply to. i've been interested in the hpme one since i was in 7th grade =b (a family friend who got in first told me about it).

my stats: (ohgeez, this thing might to be a big post cuz some of the names are so long...)

GPA: 3.77 unweighted (ouch..)
SAT I: V-800, M-800, W-730...overall: 2330

i'm not really sure how to calculate my volunteer hours. there's also a few other service clubs that i'm a part of and hold positions in and music events that i've taken part in, but didn't think they were as important. that's the first time i've compiled my list and i feel like i'm being excessive =\ my school doesn't exactly follow the schools in the states so i don't have a ranking or know what percentile i'm in.

hope this is enough! it'd be greatly appreciated if i got some comments cuz rite now i'm sort of floundering around and i have no idea to which schools i should be applying to... but yeah, thanks!!

hey guys for the hpme program to they look at your sat scores in one sitting or is it your highest overall from all three sections.

i'm not sure, you better email them to find out (it's a chance to establish communication with them too)

thanks!!!!

If anyone's out there who's been accepted into HPME could you tell me what your stats were and about your interview/essay etc. Oh and how many were accepted into your class. I was told that only 50 get accepted each year. Is that true? How many people apply every year? thanks so much.

i think 700 to 1000 apply (filled out the little card) each year. There are 2 rounds. Dont know how many in the 2012 class yet...

hey lunknot, i think our class this year is about 45....not exactly sure, but it's close to that

I'm interested in both the HPME and PLME, but don't know if i should "waste" my time trying to apply if i know i don't have any chance of making it.
I'm actually just a rising sophmore, and thus my stats arent fully complete. but as for the moment: (please tell be if i have any chance at all)

As a Soph. I am also going to try out for the school Science Bowl Team at my school, specializing in Biology and Chemistry.

So far do I have ANY hope of making those prgms? Those sound scarily competitive...

Thanks for the help guys...REALLY appreciate it.

Can't speak much for PLME, but for HPME...

Your SATII Chem is very good. (You're taking AP Chem AND AP Bio..... sophomore year?!) And seeing as all of this was done by the time Freshman year was over........... think about what you'll do in the next 2.5.

I think you've got a very good shot at HPME.

How do my ECs/Awards and Honors fare in terms of acceptance at HPME? Are they okay so far..or do i need to focus more in that area?

Thanks for the help.

I know "research" itself is a very general term, but...

I have done independent research, but it was done within a school setting and not a laboratory setting, etc. Although I undertook these 5-6 months of research on my own, does it really count?

[I focused on how stressful situations affect emergency room physicians/the effects of physician burnout, and the result of my research was a method I created for doctors to alleviate stress/burnout: a treatment/recovery of stress symptoms. Throughout this project I was in contant with numerous physicians, including the vice-chief of the ER at a large nearby hospital and a medical student currently going through his ER rotation, and I was able to present my stress-reduction methodology to them.]

So in short/ultimately: can this research be called "research" (in terms of what other students/CCers have done)?

Does the HPME committee look for students who have done research? ......... thanks for the help.

well research is obviously good if thats what you see urself doing
however, if you want to practice clinical medicine then shadowing doctors, volunteering and clinical experience is good
of course if you do both thats great too
there are many people, in fact probably most people, who have gotten in without research because they concentrate on the clinical aspect

i'm an international student studying in Indonesia. I would like to know how many international students, if any are admitted into the HPME program.

thanks

hey jollyrancher, don't worry about your ECs. you should not join activities just to boost your resume. you should enjoy what you do - and if you do enjoy your activities, you'll probably naturally excel at them. just focus on finding joy in your ECs and building your character, so that you can talk about your activities naturally during your interview with zeal and enthusiasm.

u guys think i have a chance?? should i apply or not? Cuz, if i apply for the HPME prog, then i wont be able to apply ED at other uni's. i really need you guys' help!!

thanks

I am an international student going to my senior in an american international christian school in indonesia. i will graduate in 2006 and I am interested in applying to NU for the HPME program. The school i attend is really small (total 70 students). Being a small school there arent many oppurtunities. No AP courses, no clubs and only 2 sports teams

Stats

3.678/4.0 GPA
enrolled in the most competitive courses that my school has to offer
class rank--does not rank
SAT I taken in nov 2004 but i'm retaking in oct...hoping for 2200+
SAT II- Chem and Math IIC plan to take in nov--at least 720+ on both
AP's- AP Chem -3 May 05 taken w/o AP course(self studied), plan on taking Calc AB course in school and plan on AP Bio(self study)

recs--at least two really good recs, and one good rec

EC/other things
played tennis for 5 years at a local club
school Math Champion
participated in a musical dramas
keyboard for 7 years
community service at old people's home..etc--120+ hrs
hospital volunteer work--100+hrs
organized several fund raisers for my class
incharge of the school snack shop

btw, living in indonesia, i havent had any oppurtunities to do the things that students in the states do i.e research, clubs..etc...my school doesnt even have a student council

Is math IIC required for applying for the HPME application? I've already taken Chem, Bio, and US Hist but I still have to take Math IIC in Oct. I want to be able to get the application earlier, but should I wait until I get those results back before submitting the card?

Ronlivs: I do know that HPME requires an SAT II Math, but it can be either IC or IIC. So don't fret if IIC seems to hard, just go for IC.

Taj: I'm not really sure on HPME's international applicant pool, but I think that you do have a decent chance, considering that all of the circumstantial hinderances were all situational. But do be sure to identify these "setbacks" y notifying the HPME directors. And as for Chem and Math, i'm not sure if 720 will be enough..try for at least a 760, as that was HPME's average last year.
Also, try to get a 2250 on the SAT I, as a 1500 was the SAT average was for PLME (HPME was 1520). And on the conversion scale, 2250=1500. Try to look into the ACT as well, that might be a better "match" for you.
Lastly, make your essay REALLY stand out. The best way to do this is to chose an activity that you did throughtout HS, and connect that to your passion for medicine. Remember that this is similar to applying to medical school (in some aspects), so the adcoms want to know you are passionate.

Hope that helps.

no, its not that..I have no problem taking the math IIC but I just didn't take it yet. I have to take it anyway for other applications but for HPME, I want to get the application as soon as possible and I don't want to wait until Oct to send in my card. I was just wondering if not having a Math IIC score on the card will work against me for getting an application.
