Northwestern HPME Part 1

chicagonobel, ur right up there if not better than us--good numbers, ur research is a strength (envy--hahah). what about ec's and hospital experience? those are important too. best of luck. p.s. u'll get interviews--based on numbers....haha, and oh yea, i can't believe u posted "indian" as part of ur stats.....haha it says a lot, tho, no doubt...

looking at the number of indians at HPME, the fact that I am Indian might hurt, but hey...i can't change that...

Only time will tell how our fates will turn out to be. What ever happens, I am bound to the great city of Chicago !

In regard to my hosptial exprience, I don't have any. (This will slap me right in the face.)

I am applying to HPME, hoping to do BS/MD/Ph.D. This is my best chance for getting into the program. I will be emphasizing this on my essay, of course.

Good luck to you and every one on this board.

hey papucutta,

the application is one page front and back that ask you your statistics. Then another page comes in the letter that asks you to send certain things to the HPME office such as an ENGLISH teacher rec (no substitutes) and a few letters. It will take less than an hour to get everything finished!

hey chicagonobel,

i'm sorry to admit that being asian will hurt you for this program as their are 42 asians in the last HPME class out of 50 kids; however, being from chicago is a huge advantage so don't worry to much!

buckwald, u mention a "few letters." what do you mean?

I believe you have it wrong...

on the application it says
Deadlines for the Honors Program in Medical Education
ACT or SAT I November test date
HPME request card December 1
SAT II December test date
HPME application January 1
Application for admission January 1

ONLY the card has to be in by Dec 1 I believe. The application can be sent by Jan 1.

yes.....i think that's what everyone else had in mind as well. i'm just over-concerned lol.

I'm sending in my HPME card tomorrow!
and hopefully completing part I of NU application today!

indian male NJ
1560, 800, 770, 760, 750, 720 research, hospital volunteering, etc...

lol everyone's on top of the ball here--i sent my part i and ii online and the card via mail yesterday.

1520, 800ic (haha), 790iic, 770chem, 720writing, research, volunteering, prez of bunch of clubs at school, etc....same old stuff as everyone else, it seems like--my only hook is a job at a peds office (lol--a hook even?). haha, oh, and yea, indian male here too.

wow...how many indians are applying to HPME

me
papucutta

Who else?

This is nice!

I'm applying to HPME!

I ahve a 1510, 760 IIC, 700 Writing, awaiting Chem (probably at 700). I have no research experience, hospital volunteering, and a bunch of extra-curriclar activities. HPME is my first choice!

haha....and his dad is on the med school's exec. board...haha...we all hate you buckwald yet love you for your invaluable posts about the program.

wait, did u mean to say that you don't have volunteering experience?

btw chicagonobel, a large number of indian applicants (which there is) is not a good thing........lol i'm seriously intimidated by the fact, and I'M AN INDIAN (haha wat does that say about the strength of my stats...? lol).

i got the voluntering, just no resarch. and papucutta is definitely right- most programs discriminate against Asians/Indians due to the number of applicants who apply as is evident by this board. However, they still accepted 42 Indians/Asians into their program last year so why not keep the momentum this year?

Is an interview required/recommended? If not I might just have to go against my gut feeling and conceal my race.. I'm Asian too. Woe is me!

Is HPME one of those programs that emphasizes math and science, and nothing else? I noticed that they want an English teacher rec..interesting...and my English teacher is actually the one who informed me that medical schools aren't looking so much for the extreme mathlete/science bowl geek as the well-rounded student who is just as good at English/history as math/science, if not better? I really hope so because I'm better at humanities and social sciences (although I like math/science more, yeah, weird right?).

An interview is required; however, Northwestern does conduct phone interviews (just be sure to remeber that it is central time). If you conceal your face they will think you are sketchy, and is probably not the best idea. With regards to the "well-rounded question", the HPME does not want 50 math and science "geeks" who do research. Maybe they would like a few, but they want diversity in the program, different people bringing different people to the table. Hope this helps!

u mean to say that an interview is required before the one that you get invited to by hpme??? that seems like a waste of everyone's time....

no, the hpme interview is required for admission into HPME- the one that your getting invited too

lol im applying to, sent in the card two days ago

1590
800 chem
800iic
740writing

hospital volunteer 3 years
cancer research
national ap scholar
president debate club
other clubs
alot of college courses

hey you guys, are you sending any letters of rec from people other than teachers/guidance counselors for programs you're applying to, since they specifically ask for recs from a science teacher and a teacher who can comment on ur writing ability? i.e. any letters from docs/research mentors/etc...?
