Hahaha yeah actually. I was at preview NU from 17-19, but really went to the 18-19 one. You? Only two kids from CC going to HPME this year?

actually...I'm heading to PLME next year (recently decided)

but good luck to everyone! HPME is a fantastic program. My financial aid ended up making the decision for me.

Hi guys,
I was wodering if any Canadian students got accepted to HPME this year?
O and is it true that HPME is cutting down the number of seats available for next year to about 35.
And does HPME give any special consideration to students in gifted programs?
Please reply.

What's the deal with APs in regards to HPME students? When I go this fall I'll have taken.. Comp Sci A, Calc BC/ AB, English Lang and Lit, Chem, Bio, Spanish Lang, US History, Statistics, Gov, Macroeco. Do these APs matter (should I care about them)? and if they matter.. how much? do they actually help me or do they not really matter?

Sorry to tell you this, but you probably won't use 50% of those APs. First of all, I believe the AP policy for Northwestern has been decreased for next year's entering class to 2. English APs are useless. Spanish will definitely help to demonstrate foreign language proficiency (provided you got a 5). Bio is useless, everybody starts at the same level Bio 210 during Sophomore year. Chem is helpful for passing out of gen chem and going straight to Orgo. US History is useless. Stats might be useful depending on whether your major requires a stats course. Gov is useless. Macroecon is only useful if you're pursuing an economics-related major. Calc is useful for proving math proficiency. Comp Sci is useless.

Also, they don't let HPME students use their APs to get out of distro requirements.

Have fun lol

haha thanks for the info Neom.

So I'm playing this AP week. Noiceee.

same here, sphybrid! So you're going to hpme for sure? =)

Definately. You?

yup =] i'll see you next year!

hey guys, this is my first time posting. after much deliberation, i'll be attending hpme next year as a bme.

just a few quick questions.
what class are we considered? i've heard anything from '10 to '13 (i want to start a facebook group)

is there any definitive word on the gpa requirement changes?

alright, my e-mail is a-sheu@northwestern.edu. facebook me. i'm starting to get addicted. and weaned off the myspace phase.

Go with class of 2013. Ours is "HPME Class of 2012"

I am a junior so I'll be applying to HPME next year. Right now I'm really worried that my SAT verbal score will be too low. I think the rest of my application can stand a chance but I'm not sure if my verbal score will hurt me.

All you HPME-er's: how did you guys do on the SAT? Do you need really good SAT scores to get in, even if you've done alot of research and medical-related activities?

790 verbal 800 math 800 writing

but I don't personally believe NW is too worried about standardized test scores. If you've done a lot of research and shown a lot of involvement in the medical field (which shows your interest and commitment) then that's more important and will help you more than your scores will hurt you. They're not looking just for kids who can take tests. they're looking for people who are really sure they want to do medicine and show a genuine interest in it.

thanks for your input, lostintranslation! However my SAT verbal score is sitting at an exceptionally low 610. My writing and math are both high 700s. BUT I have done alot of activities in medicine and I really want to pursue it as a career. Hope I don't get hurt too bad by that score.

Does anybody know of any RSI scholars that got into HPME? Do they even know about it or consider it a "hook"?

i think as long as your math + verbal is above 1460, you should be safe.
Then after, its all about extracurriculars.
Can you guys name some "Activities in medicine"

Research, Volunteer, OR Volunteer, Specialty Volunteering, Shadowing, Interning, Working at a Doctor's Office, Publishing in a Journal, Summer Missions/NGO, etc. There are a million (okay maybe not a MILLION, but damn close to it) things you can do and make it medically related. My strongest essays and ECs were not entirely medical; however, the way they shaped my life was very medically motivated.

there will be no more HPME they cancelled the program

You lie. All they're doing is cutting the program down by about 5 people a year until they get it to a more manageable, compact size (25).

sorry thanks so how many are getting excepted this year and will it be harder????????????
