Northwestern HPME Part 1

I have a friend who got in, and I think he said that they're aiming for a class of 35. However, keep in mind that they accept more because some (like he) will reject their offer of admission.

NU HPME is my second choice for college next year (UPitt 8-year BA/MD is first)

What kind of chances do I have, and What do I need to improve?

GPA: 4.5+ probably........ Weighted
around 3.95 unweighted? (B in AP English 11)
PSAT: 210 --> Maybe commended? not sure.... haven't learned yet
SAT: 2160 = best composite (800M 670CR 690W)
ACT: 35 (forget composite, perfects on Math and Science I think), i think 10 on essay
SAT II:
USH
Chem
Physics
^Finding out wednesday^

APs(All expected values):
Chem - 5
Physics B - 4 or 5
US History - 3 or 4
Lang and Comp - 3 or 4
Bio - next year
U.S. Gov - next year
Lit and Comp - next year
Span - next year
Calc BC - next year possibly
AP Physics C: Mech and E&M - very slight chance I might do next year

I took AP Stats this year --> Did a program called College in High School for Stats..... gives me a College transcript from University of Pittsburgh with Basic Statistics on it. Will probably do same program for Calc BC.

4 English classes
4 Social Studies Classes
6 Science Classes(2 Bio 2 Chem 2 Physics--> might be 4 physics if I take Physics C)
4 Math Classes
5 Spanish classes (started high school w/ Hon Span 2)

ECs-
Medical Research volunteering over summer
JV Tennis Captain, hopefully Varsity next year
NHS
Honor Roll
Volunteering at Nursing Homes
JHU's CTY Program (2 occasions --> Intro to Biomedical Sciences and Genetics)
PA Gov School for Healthcare
Shadowing a doctor this summer

Jobs:
Burger King :X (will this hurt me?)

suggestions please!

Evilbooya-
I think you have a great shot. I would advise to maybe retake the SAT for slightly higher CR and W scores, but I think yours are good enough to get in with. As for your ECs, they seem adequate enough. I think what's most important about these programs is not necessarily how many things you did but what you learned from them. When you shadow the doctor this summer, be sure to think about why you want to be a physician and write about that in your essay. The essay is possibly the most important part of the application. Good Luck!

i think you should send the act score instead of the sat one. I'm not sure if HPME takes ACT. I hope they do.

ellen - thanks for the advice.

however, I don't think re-taking the SAT will do me any good.... my CR and W aren't going to improve much (might possibly go up to 700, nothing much more than that). I'm really not good at that sort of thing. I was hoping that HPME would realize my 800 in math and perhaps look at that since I'm going to need math more than english skills.

I gotta make sure I write good essays? Alright, I'll spend most of this summer doing that.

Madamebovary - if they accept the ACT, I will surely send that (first I'll find out what my composites are)

Anything I can do this late to improve my chances would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm going to be a junior and I'm really interested in the HPME at NU. What do you guys think my chances are (i'll keep it short):

4.4 weighted-3.9 unweighted
class rank- 13/299
projected 2250
PSAT: 216 as sophomore, projected 225-230 as junior
ACT: projected 32-33

AP's 11th and 12th grade (cant take them in 10th):
all

EC's
varsity debater
Science Olympiad vice pres.
Science Olympiad 1st place districts
Academic Team JV 1st place state
1st stand Symphonic Orchestra
Eagle Scout
2 time Junior Academy of Science "Associate of the Academy" award
varsity cross country
research at Washington University in St. Louis on malaria; researching Parkinson's disease this summer
100-150 hrs. hospital volunteer
Red Cross volunteer(Measles and Malaria initiative)
going to Africa or India next summer w/ Red Cross
etc

weak sauce...no im kidding. I heard eagle scout looks reeeeaaaally good to all colleges and med progs. Shows commitment and the ability to tie knots of all shapes and sizes. Looks good, though but keep in mind HPME is one of the toughest programs ever. Keep up the research and volunteering and try to medal in S.O. Debate and Cross Country. Shows that you not only are a member, but a pivotol part of the program. Other than that it looks real nice, maybe see if you can run for them too? Seeing as how you've been on varsity since freshman year. Still, i doubt one person on these boards has a great chance at HPME even if theres perfect scores, published research, and athletic state championships. Your number one goal should be to be genuine and pursue your interests. Don't worry how itll look to one prog or another. Because if they can see you are a genuine kid who does things so that he can enjoy the experience, and to help others, rather than just for the resume, itll make all the difference. Good Luck and Keep it UP!

thanks. Thats some really good advice. I never realized just about everyone applying to progs do research. I'm doing research because I really want to and have a interest in it, and same with violin, cross country, and debate.

Are you planning on applying to HPME? What are your stats?

kannada, I am going to be a junior too and I really want to apply for the northwestern HPME. Are you applying to any other schools with combined degrees.

and Science Olympiad is cool!!!!

yeah, I live in Missouri so I'm interested in UMKC, but cautious at the same time. Between HPME and UMKC, I would unquestionably go to HPME, but I will apply to the 6 year at UMKC too. Besides that, Brown's PLME and USC seem cool too.

What about you xwang90? What do like to do and how do think you fair against applicants for the HPME.

PLME and HPME are my top choices for colleges and I would go if I can get accepted. I will probably apply for Rice and maybe USC as well. The thing is that I live in southern cali, and I heard bad things about USC so I am not sure about that.

To answer your questions, I think I have a fair chance, but I really am not sure if I will have a spot. I will probably send in my application and hope for the best. :-)

For your research at Washington in St. Louis this summer, are you doing that through STAR? Becuase I almost decided to go to Washington in St. Louis this summer to do research! lol

I was going to apply to STARS (its not hard to get in either), but since I emailed professors and got positions that I liked, I decided not to apply. Many people that I've seen in STARS, sure, had fun and met many people in the science world, but didn't have projects that would make it to ISEF or anything, which I hope to do this next year.

how do you apply to STARs

fill out an application and transcript, essay, etc. by March ...someday. lasts june now through august? or so.

That's very cool. Are you planning on applying for any other summer programs next year, for the summer?

Kannada, are you taking all 35 APs. Wow!!!

Also is the Stars program for high schoolers because it seems like its for college undergrads.

STARS is for high school students. All you do is research

Can you please attach the link if possible and the application
Thanks

Also can out of state people apply and is it free or you have to pay for it.
