Northwestern HPME Part 2

no i am not. i just went through the process myself but didnt get in anywhere.

it doesnt hurt to retake. not at all. i would recommend retaking it because SAT II’s are quite easy.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Retaking the SAT II won’t hurt you, but if you feel that your score isn’t going to improve by a lot, your time would be better spent doing something related to medicine like volunteering, shadowing, etc.

How much does HPME look at specific subscores for the tests? For instance, my ACT score was: 34 English, 36 Math, 35 Reading, 36 Science, but shudder 8 Writing. Will this hurt me? Because I’m not a bad writer (11 on SAT Essay), I just had a bad day when I took the ACT and I don’t think it’s worth $50 to raise my ACT score by a max of 0.75, but what do you all think

I know someone brought up the issue of cost to HPME, and i’d like to second that issue. I would have gone to HPME but money became a huge factor. Perhaps some merit scholarships should be considered in the future? This is truly a fantastic program and it is regrettable that due to financial aid alone, many of the kids (like me) choose to attend HYPSM instead.

I have no idea about how important subscores are, but I would like to reemphasize that scores are not the most important thing in HPME applications. The key component to the application is the passion for medicine.

As for financial aid, Northwestern as a whole doesn’t give lots of financial aid, but that has been changing in recent years.

I would like to know if I have a chance at the HPME program. Here are my current stats:
GPA: 4.45/5
Ranked 6/898
AP Course-
AP European History-5
AP U.S. History-
AP Chemistry-
AP Language and Composition-
AP Calculus BC-
The scores that i left blank are coming in the mail
ACT- 36
SAT II’s are coming in the mail
Extracurriculars- Hospital volunteering, IMEA participant, Varsity Tennis, Volunteering at chinese school, volunteering at nursing home.

EricWu, you definitely have a shot. those great stats of yours will help to get an interview. However, after that, you just need to ace the interview.

Hey EricWu, I agree with niloy.ghosh518. You have good stats and should try applying. Remember, that stats only get you the application, from there you have to convince HPME that you are right for the program.

I have a 2250 SAT, 760 SAT II Math, 790 SAT II Chem. I’m taking the ACT in September, SAT II Bio in October and retaking the SAT in November. Are these scores enough to get me an application? (Or should I retake SAT II Math…? I know I can get a better, maybe even perfect, score but I don’t know how much of a difference 40 points really makes =\ )
Thanks :)

do you guys think i have a shot? i know that after u get the card, ur stats don’t matter and its all about passion and stuff. should i bother to apply? this would be my dream program.

Here are my stats:

GPA:
Weighted: 4.5
Unweighted: 4.00

Class Rank: 10/760 ~top 1%…will definitely be higher when the new rankings come out. prolly around 6 or 7

Recs: not worried. i <3 my teachers

so do i have a shot?

What is the difference between a weighted and unweighted gpa?

Also, does it look bad that I have only taken 3 AP classes total in high school (2 english and calc.) because my school does not offer any others?

weighted gpa is with honors pts or for taking ap classes. unweighted does not include anything. a 4 is an A, a 3 is B…and so on.

do you think I have a shot???

Race: Asian(from far east?)
don’t have any US citizenship or residency

GPA: 4.0/4.0(unweighted, my school is school outside US and a local school?
so I assume my GPA to be that?)

rank: no rank?

SAT 1: 1600 or 2360

SAT subjects:
bio 770 world history 800 math IIC 800 chem 780 physics 750+(i expect)

APs:
chem, bio, stat, cal BC, world history, psychology, micro econ, macro econ,
environmental science(I think 1/3 of these are 4’s and 2/3 of these are 5’s?)

ECs:

Asian Science Camp 2009([2009 Asian Science Camp/Japan](http://asc09.kek.jp)
several Nobel laureates give lectures?)

research internship at hospital(one of famous hospital in my country??? an affiliate medical center of Harvard Medical School?)

club veep once
and founder and president of other club?

volunteering at local health center

shadowing doctor

wow ur stats look amazin!! im not so sure how the non-us residency thing would work out though. and if ur an asian male it mite be a bit difficult. im jealous of ur sat score =P…lol

Hey everyone! I’d just like to say again, that grades/scores are not the most important aspect of the HPME application. In fact, your grades/scores are only enough to get you an application, it is your ability to convey a strong passion for medicine that will get you into the program.

I was just wondering around how many people get accepted into the HPME program per year. I would also like to know what kind of questions they ask at the interviews and what they are looking for in a person. Thanks

Most people probably wont do this, but I was wondering if any current/old HPME students would PM me their essay. Obv Im not going to copy or use any info in any way shape or form, I have very very personal reasons of being a doctor-but Im curious as too the writing format/ conveying of ideas it takes to get in. If you dont, I completely understand-but can you give me pointers? If you do, thanks!

hey guys I’m a rising junior and I was wondering what my chances for HPME are

School:
-GPA: 3.86---- it’ll be a 3.9 at least by the end of my junior year.

-As for my classes, my school only offers 3 APs that i can take (calc, stats, spanish) and i plan to take all three. I’m in all of the possible honors classes.

Scores:
I haven’t taken the ACT or SAT yet but these are my estimated scores
ACT probably a 33+
SAT probably 2200 +
SAT II Bio (taking it this saturday) 720
AP World (self study) 5
AP Bio (self study) 4

Extracurriculars:

Debate:
I was in JV Debate this year, next I’ll be in varsity

Speech:
-I got 8th in State this year for Extemp Speaking. Probably will go to Nations next year.
-Done well in many of the tournaments all year long.

Quiz Bowl:
Our A team went to nat’ls this year, next year we will most likely go as well.

Tennis:
Played JV 2nd Singles, next year I’m hoping to be on varsity.

Karate:
-Have a black belt in shotokan karate.

Piano:
-I’m in level 7 of the National Music Certificate Program

Math League:
I wasn’t very good this year, but next year I plan on improving my skills significantly.

Volunteering: I volunteer at a local hospital and thus far I have 70 hours. I also tutored a student in math (20 hours), and a few other things that add up to about 130 hours total for freshman and sophomore years.

Does HPME want a well-rounded person? Because, I don’t mean to toot my own horn but, I feel as though my app shows that I’m well rounded. Should I do more medical related stuff?

So really the academics part only helps you get the application? And after you get the application you are mainly judged on your extracurriculars?
