Yeah so right now I don't think I will be able to go to the summer orientation in July as my cousin has a wedding a couple days from it and we have to travel.

I still don't have a roommate but I plan on working on that through the finder system, but how much will this REALLY affect me? I know there is a fall orientation.

you’ll have a serious disadvantage in picking classes. If it’s a required/beginning class for your major, you’ll still be able to take it, but the more popular class times and teachers would be taken. The classes that you want to take that interests you would probably be gone.

It is not that bad. This is what many of the international students do because their student visas don’t allow them to come to the U.S. for summer and fall both, or because an extra round-trip flight is very expensive. You will probably end up with more 8 am or 4 pm classes than you would prefer for your first semester. It will be annoying. But it is just one semester; you will be okay. And frankly, I think there is not a huge difference between attending the last summer session and attending the fall session. (Sometimes people can’t get off work for the orientation and their schedules work out all right. Come to summer orientation if you can but don’t lose sleep over it if you really can’t make it.)

You can try to sign up for a different session. Cancellations are put into the system at 8am on mondays, so log in at that time and see if it’ll allow you to sign up for a different session available.

No, it’s not that bad.

Summer Orientation just helps you get more situated with the campus and introduces you to UT online system but registration is pretty easy.

Most classes fill up quick, but if you wait until ADD/DROP period (right after tuition is due in August) a lot of impossible classes open up. It just all depends on how diligent you are at looking at the course schedule.

I went to one of the earlier orientations (June 18th…2nd orientation i think) and even then all of the good classes with good teachers were closed (upperclassmen have first pick and you’d be surprised by the number of them who has to take intro classes because they changed their majors). But I managed to get decent teachers (albeit not all the ones i wanted).

Then I went on vacation and forgot all about paying tution. All my classes were dropped and I was freaking out because every class was closed and also because I had to wait until Mid August to re-register.

Let’s just say that i wasn’t the only one who forgot. Not to mention people change their minds all the time during this period so basically you just have to be patient and keep checking the course schedule (refresh is a great friend).

Good luck!
