Not taking Eng 2 until Winter...UCLA reject me?

I'm a second year student at SMC applying for UCLA in the fall. I have all of my pre reqs and everything done with a 3.89 gpa. Well all except for english. I'm taking english 1 right now and will take english 2 in the winter, because my counselor said I won't be looked at by UCLA if I take it in the spring. My question is: will it be any better in the winter, or am I pretty much screwed? About what time do the admissions staff overlook applications? I just want them to see that I am taking it.

Also, does anyone know or heard of a transfer student getting into UCLA's communications department last year? If so, what was their gpa?

According to my understanding it is highly favorable to complete English by the fall (2010), but UC’s give you until the Spring to finish it. In other words, I don’t think you can automatically get rejected for not having English completed by fall.

You can find information and statistics of Communication transfers to UCLA on the UCLA transfer website.

I was accepted by UCLA even though I took English 2 in the spring. However, your major is wayyyy more competitive than mine. All I can say is try to maintain your GPA since there’s not much left for you to do.

I took English during the Winter of the year I transferred to UCLA. You’re fine.
I

communication @ ucla is the most competitive
isnt the admit average gpa hover around late 3.9x?
well i hope that explains all
and really good luck getting in esp. putting your english classes that late

I really don’t think anything should apply as a Comm trasfer unless they have a 3.95+ with all prereqs, English, and math completed by Fall.

I disagree with that. From what I hear they look at mostly 3.9 or higher students, but saying you should have a 3.95+ isn’t right. I’ll most likely be applying with about a 3.93 and I expect them to seriously look at my application and others in that range.

And as for the English completed by fall, I think I should be good with taking it in the winter, or at least that is what my counselor says. I’m definitely not going to pass up a chance of getting into UCLA just because of the competitiveness of the major.

That’s a great attitude. Just have a serious back-up. Last year I saw a few Comm majors get rejected from UCLA with a 4.0 and all pre-reqs completed.

Thanks

I know, it’s so crazy. I’m not getting my hopes up too much and I already have two other schools as back-ups. Loyola Marymount and CSU Northridge.

@nick773 CSUN Comm is my back-up as well. As for LMU, I’m not applying, but I have 2 friends that did Comm there and they highly recommend it. Anyhow, good luck with UCLA!!

Nice! I’m glad to hear some positive things about LMU’s Comm. Good luck to you too!

Your GPA is fine and you just want to take English 2 during SMC’s 6-week winter session. That way all your paperwork will be complete in the spring so the counselor is correct.
