November 13 SSAT

Thanks. I’m just really stressed because I’m applying to Andover. Their mean SSAT is a 92, I think, but once they look at the individual scores it won’t matter. Ughhh.

@cassat,
From what I gather from talking to people on here, these schools don’t care about your composite score that much. They care that all your composite scores are above 80% I’ve heard. But I bet they can forgive one section in the 70’s. But your are applying to Andover, which looks at the SSAT more than other schools. I’d retake in December like I probably will wind up doing.

My daughter said it was easier than the PR practice tests.

Verbal - 800 - 99%
Math - 776 - 97%
Reading - 725 - 94%

Overall: 2301 - 99%

Hope this helps get her in to the “Big 3” in DC. She’s got straight A’s, but I knew she needed to kill the SSAT or her grades wouldn’t matter. Good luck to everyone with the results! Finally - it’s OVER!!

Which are the Big 3 in DC?

@dramaswimmer: As my friend from NZ says “Good on ya.” It was the cross-body exercises that made the difference, right? ;-)

We got ours e-mailed to us yesterday as well, even though we didn’t sign up for expedited delivery. Son had thought he did best in math, then vocab, then reading. (He guessed 99%, 85% and 50% based on his practice tests.) But it turns out that he did best in math, then reading and verbal was worst. All three scores were within 10 percentage points of each other.

A PP asked me which schools are considered the “Big 3”. Though some parents would substitute in their school, there’s a general consensus that the three are Sidwell Friends, St. Albans/National Cathedral and Georgetown Day.

Congrats on everyone’s good scores! (:
I haven’t received mine yet.

To get an 800 in a section, would you have to answer every question correctly?

intrinsically-
Nope. I got an 800 on verbal with around 4 or 5 wrong/omitted.

SevenDad-Can i ask You what grade Your daughter is in? thanks!

@intrinsically: On the reading section, it seems like you must get all correct to get an 800.

@Exeterr: She’s in 8th, applying for 9th (class of 2015). I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned that before in previous posts. Why do you ask?

I’m in NJ and haven’t received my score report in the mail yet. When should I expect it?

This is a somewhat ridiculous question since I already took the test and shouldn’t be dwelling on it, but how much would 2 skipped math questions bring me down? + maybe 1-2 incorrect.

I missed 3 math questions, none omitted and got a 794, so I guess you could probably expect above 780.

My son received his SSAT scores in the mail yesterday. We were stunned by how poorly he did. There was a huge difference in his scores on the practice tests and the actual test on Nov 13. We used the SSAT guide and the Princeton Review book. We timed his practice tests just as if they were real tests. He consistently scored in the high 90 percentiles on the practice tests. On the real test he got almost a hundred points lower in the Verbal and Reading sections – in Math he got about 790. When my son came out of the Nov 13th test he said that he did not know half the words on the Verbal test. Some of the earlier posts suggested that kids performed better on the real test compared to the practice tests – our experience was the opposite. I don’t know if my son is a poor test taker? Any thoughts, suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Request the “hand scoring” service (or whatever it’s called) for a fee. Register him for the next available test at the same time.

Thanks – we have already registered for the next test. They have a hand scoring option for $60. We are seriously considering it. Thx.

sportscrazy - My son has a terrible time with standardized tests, and the SSAT is no exception. We found he did better on the ISEE. And he’s not alone - some kids just like the ISEE better. Not all the schools accept it, but if yours do, then you might want to consider it. In the meantime, work on vocabulary together! Good luck!

dodgersmom – thank you

Just got back my scores. I got a 93!!! Yay, I’m so happy right now!!!
