Nsli-y 2012-2013

Apparently there were 2786 applicants this year. There will be about 600 scholarships. Those are some tough odds. :(

^^^^ Where did this stat come from? Any other stats regarding apps?

This statistic was posted by an AFS volunteer on Cultureshocked forum. AFS does the interviews for semi-finalists for NSLI-Y. They must have provided this info on the AFS volunteer website. I’d like to know more statistics such as the breakdown between summer and year applicants, and the language preferences, however no other statistics were provided.

I think that’s some pretty good stats! 600 scholarships out of about 2800 applicants… Thats a good portion!

It’s not even December 1st yet and I’m already freaking out! I’m super duper excited and since I live in the same city that the headquarters are I hope to get a notification on whether I’m a semi-finalist or not sooner, which makes me more nervous!

I’m applying for Korea, China, and then Russia as my 3rd choice. :)

I put down any duration for Korea. I really want to go for the year, but I’m worried about my credits. But I plan on talking to my counsler soon, and if they’ll transfer my credits, I’m going to email them and change my first option to a year then summer. I’m a sophomore now, so I’ll be a junior when I go.

It’s December! Only a few more weeks until semi-finalists are announced! Good luck to everyone who applied!

We should receive emails by December 17!

Just got my semi-finalist email!! I applied for 1 India, 2 Arabic, 3 any. Best of luck to everyone. I’m so excited!!

2 semi-finalists in my family - D13 for summer Chinese, Arabic or Persian and S14 for year Chinese, Korean or any. They were both semi finalists for summer last year but did not get it. I hope this is the year!

D16 got email this morning too. So excited. Top choice is Arabic.

I am very excited as well! I am absolutely in love with Arabic, Korean, and Turkish languages and cultures and so this is quite heartening  What are the letter and number pairs that you guys are referring to?

I received an email today as well. Congratulations to all the other semi-finalists! I was just wondering if anyone attended this program in the past, and if they had any information about the program. I read a lot about it, and it seems wonderful, but firsthand information is always really cool. Thanks!

I just got my semi-finalist email today too!!! I’m so excited, i applied for china, korea, and any. Good luck to everyone!

Yeah…
I’m a semi-finalist!!

Semi-finalist for China, Korea, and Russia summer!
Good luck to everyone!

My mom told me while I got in the car. She had a grave and sad look on her face when she said, “I’ve got news for you.” My heart sunk, “Its about NSLI-Y, isn’t it?” and she said yeah. My sister was like “IS IT GOOD OR BAD?” I yelled at her because I didn’t want to know, I was literally about to cry. After like 2 minutes I built the confidence for her to tell me and then my mom smiled, “YOU’RE A SEMI-FINALIST!”

I’m MAJOR excited! Congrats to the other people who made it in, too!

I am planning on studying arabic for a year in Morocco, is/has anyone else applied for arabic?

Is anyone else doing Korea as a first choice? :D

I’m a semi finalist too, do you know how many scholarships are left?
