My interview is tomorrow!! I’m so excited. I cannot wait!

How did your interview go?

I think it went really well! The man who interviewed me was so nice. Once it started it seemed like just a conversation, he appeared to be genuinely interested in what I was saying. He asked a lot of questions about my family, interests, and school, and why I wanted to be in the program. Also, there were some examples of situations that I had to respond to. Now, I’m just going to be itching until April. Good luck to everyone else!

are you all aware of connect.state.gov/group/nsliy?
you can chat with alumni & meet with fellow applicants

Just wondering, if anyone received the scholarship in years past, would you mind posting some stats
Ie class rank, language knowledge, age, country requested, and some activities that you participate in

I just had my interview today, and I think it went pretty well. At the end, my interviewer told me that she thought I was perfect for the program, but she said that I should not be worried if I didn’t get in; it wasn’t anything about me, just that there were too many applicants. Good or bad? I’m so nervous…

Looks like I’m the only one rejected on here… haha oh well. Really thought I had a good shot!

The news came a day before an acceptance to my ED college, so that softened the blow a bit. Good luck to all on here who continue on in the selection process!

For those of you that had interviews in your own home, did your parents sit in the same room as you during the interview? And did the interviewer ask for a tour of your house/bedroom?

NSLI-Y interviews are done by AFS volunteers. No AFS volunteer is ever going to ask to see your bedroom or tour your house. They might even refuse if you offered. They are just coming to talk to you. They will probably talk to you separately and then talk to your parents to see how your parents feel about you going on exchange. You can be prepared to offer a cup of coffee or soda but don’t feel like you have to knock yourself out to clean your house. Really. It’s about you, not your home or how neat you are. Try not to stress.

Does anyone who has already had their interview willing to give me some tips as to how to mentally prepare? Not nervous, just reaaaaalllly excited and anxious :D

I JUST had my interview about 10 minutes ago. I had a phone interview, so it may have been different, but my interviewer asked a lot of questions about my application and resume. He also asked about family occupation, family education, family activities, and friends. There were also several (like, 40+) yes/no questions about your family, friends, personality, and hobbies. He also asked a question something along the lines of: If your host family or classmate said that your American accent is difficult to understand, what would you say to them? and Where does your neighborhood fit in the economic scale? High, medium, or low? and What are some things you like to do with your friends and what would you do it you cant do them with your host family?

Russia!! Just had my interview, went well the people are really chill
Does anyone know what to pack or what the limit on luggage is (I know it’s a dumb question)

I’m sure they will provide you with that information once you are accepted.

I had my interview in December in NYC. Interviewer was really nice and said he had nothing but positive comments to send back to DC. I’m just trying to figure out alternative summer programs (if/when) I get rejected from Russia. any ideas?

Just got an email about the Federal language service academy.[Federal Service Language Academy| The Military College of Georgia | NGCSU | FSLA](http://www.northgeorgia.edu/summeracademy/) It is $1800 for three weeks study of Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Korean, French or German. Last year admission was very competitive but the program was free. I imagine that there won’t be as many applicants this year. Still, most academic summer programs run about $1,000 per week so this is a good deal if you can afford it.

Anyone else make Hindi their first choice?
