Nsli-y 2012-2013

I called the NSLI-Y office today, and the lady said that notifications will be sent until mid- April.

Thanks! I was wondering… DD13 is waiting for summer Chinese, DS14 is waiting for year Chinese.

What does “DD13” and “DS14” mean?

Oh, do you know if any China notifications have been sent out? I hope I get in, it was my first choice!! :)

That’s College Confidential parent speak for dear son (DS) and dear daughter(DD) followed by their high school graduation years.

That’s so exciting! I hope they both get in! Your daughter and I are graduating in the same year; maybe if we both get in, we’ll be in the same group.

My daughter has been accepted to the NSLI-Y Hindi Summer program in Pune but we cannot locate the Facebook group – the link does not seem to work. Could you re-post?

Any word on Turkey summer for anyone yet?

Just heard last night. Morocco here I come. Now I’m a little nervous.

Congratulations! That’s great! What an interesting culture! Great food, too! You’ll have a great time.

Congrats! I heard Morocco was really cool.

Just got my email! I’m going to Tajikistan! Anyone else?

I know it is a long shot because summer Chinese is the most popular program, but I hope my D13 gets a spot. If she gets this opportunity, she plans to study Chinese in college but if she doesn’t, I think she will give up on Chinese and focus on Spanish and Portuguese because she still has another year of high school and no way to study Chinese at her school. She was a semi-finalist last year but didn’t get in. She did a Startalk program after a year of Chinese at her previous high school but it is difficult to maintain your language skills when you cannot continue to study the language. As great as her current school is, they don’t offer Chinese. It would be unfortunate if she gave up.

Apollo6 - I think the Startalk program will reflect well on your daughter’s application! Best of luck to her

OMG! I remember 2010 when I was accepted into the NSLI program, so exciting and nervous! Good luck to everyone!!! (the wait is the hardest!)

Has anyone from the Delaware/Pennsylvania area heard anything yet?

They do it by program not by region.
Russia, Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Korea (summer) and some others have heard. China hasn’t.
These are acceptances that is. Rejections are sent out at the end.

musicgeek1995: I don’t mean to be annoying, I’m just really worried about this, and I have been trying to find out as much information as I can. Usually when I call, no one is available. So, I just have a couple questions. (It’s okay if you don’t know all the answers)

 1. Have all the acceptances from the countries you named been sent, or is there still a chance that some of them are still on their way from these countries?
 2. When you said “and some others have heard”, do you know if Hindi already found out, or is the only one left that hasn’t heard China?
 3. For the acceptances given out already, do you know if they were for people who had the (ABOVE COUNTRIES) listed as their first choice, or any choice at all?
 4. And then, by far the most important one, I think, if you (I’m directing it more towards me) haven’t heard anything yet, is it most likely because you were rejected from all three programs that you selected? China was my first choice, but if they’re only sending out till’ mid- April, I don’t know, I’m getting skeptical if I made it or not…

Thank you so so much!

Chinese is the most competitive program - both for summer and for year so the odds are not great. No Chinese notifications have been sent out so far. I am waiting, too, because my daughter applied for summer Chinese and my son applied for the Chinese year program. While a few people have gotten their 2nd choice in the past, it is highly unlikely. If you don’t get a spot in your 1st choice program, you will initially be given alternate status. Then, after they have given all the finalists opportunities to respond, they will approach alternates. After any remaining spots are taken, they will send out regrets. It is agony, but it should all be settled by the end of April. Hang in there!

Oh my gosh, I’m literally hyperventilating. Good luck everyone (who hasn’t heard yet)!
