NSLI-Y 2017 - 2018

I have my interview this weekend!

Good luck @pineapple86 !

Hello guys! I’m a junior who applied and got accepted as a semi-finalist for the Mandarin summer program. I have my interview tomorrow and it just hit me that this is it and now I’m nervous :-SS Any tips on how to do well during the interview? Because I’m one who is shy and gets kind of nervous under pressure.

@pineapple86 me too! I have my interview Saturday…tomorrow. Good luck!

Does anyone know an estimate for the departure and return dates of the summer program this year? Or when it was in the past?

DS had his interview today and thought it went very well. And now we wait…

@3scoutsmom was your son interviewed alone or were there other semi-finalists with him. If there were other semi-finalists, are they applying to the same language program and the same duration (summer or year) as your son?

@svetoy The interview was individual. Three 3 people interviewed him at the same time. The young woman that was waiting to go after him had been to the summer program last year and was applying to the year program this time. She was also applying to the YES program and was told they would being doing the interview for both at the same time.

Wow @3scoutsmom ! Three on one. Were interviewers all adults? My DS interviewed with a parent-child team.

One of the interviewers was an recent high school graduate that is an alumni of the program, the two others were adults. There was a very nice current high school student alumni that greeted people as they arrived and talked to the parents while students were in their interviews.

I just had my interview, so if anyone has any questions about it, I’d be happy to answer them!

Congratulations @houndlover !
Did you enjoy yourself? Were you able to communicate everything that you planned? What questions did you have that the interviewers answered to your satisfaction?

Just had my interview as well!!

Has anyone on the thread already been through the post interview process? If so, what was it like?

@zoompython I had mine on Saturday! It was good, around 45 minutes, and pretty informal. Don’t worry about preparing a ton.

The post interview process? I was told I would hear from them regarding the status of my application by April 30th.

@pineapple86 Usually most summer program decisions come out in March (with Russian programs a bit earlier, if I remember correctly). Year program decisions usually come out in April. Of course, since NSLIY never gives us set dates for results, this may change.

The AFS-NSLI representative at the interview event my son attended sat down with all waiting to be interviewed, those waiting for children being interviewed and all others and patiently answered every question asked. How many students will be selected one asked. He was so honest and said that it was not within his discretion to provide that number. When will finalist be announced? He said as in the past, they will start with Russia Summer at the very end of February. After all summer placements are announced, Year will start their announcements in April. Also, when asked how students are placed, he indicated it’s usually based on language level. For example. AFS handles those Russian students who have no prior experience in Russian and places them in Kirov, Russia. American Councils takes the more advanced Russian learners and places them in their locations (e.g., Estonia and Moldova). My son’s interview lasted about 40 minutes and he indicated it was very relaxed and informal. All that there is left to do from this end is to submit the necessary medical forms and ensure that your passport’s expiration date is 6 months after your return date (or 18 months for Russian applicants).

Last year I don’t think anything was sent out later than like April 15th based on the 2016-17 thread
