I’m currently an incoming sophomore at Mercy College (Mid-Size College in NY). I plan on applying to NYU, Fordahm University, and Pace as a History major. Applying to NYU CAS as a history major for the spring 2017 semester. What are my chances?
Stats:
Recomendations: Two really good ones! Both from full time History professors who I have a great relationship with.
High school GPA: 81/100 (I Know, crap!)
College GPA: 3.635 unweighted
EC’s: Vice President of the History Club which I founded, Member of Student government, tons of volunteer work, internship at Hudson Valley Museum, two educational trips to Europe with school.
Test Scores: Not Submitting since I’ll have completed 3 semesters at my current school.
I think you have a good shot! Having good recommendations is hard in college because it’s harder to get to know your professors, so I think it’s really great that you have good relationships with them and that they were able to write you good recs. Your college GPA is good, 3.7 is an A- average so you are very close to that.
I’m also going to be a sophomore this fall at a top 10 school and am planning to apply to NYU and Hunter for transfer. Long story short I am extremely unhappy and want to be closer to home.
My stats are
HS GPA: 3.76
ACT: 34 w/ writing
College GPA: probably like 3.8-3.9 (I have to take a final exam in the fall, but am hoping to get an A) but I had a very difficult time mental-health wise and had to leave school early second semester, so I finished 3 classes in the Fall and 2 in the Spring once I finish the 2nd class in the fall (really really bad, I know). 5/8 classes total.
So I know my stats will be fine but I am so so worried that they will toss my app because of the classes situation. I am planning to write a short explanation for why that happened and just say I got really sick and had to go home for a while (which was true), so I could only finish two courses with the amount of time I was gone. I honestly have no idea what to do I’m so unhappy at my school and am praying for NYU to save me.
Recommendations: haven’t filled out the application yet, but I’m very close with my professors and talk to them after class on a daily basis so I’d imagine they’ll be good
EC’s: Executive Vice President of the Student Body, intern at Congressman MacArthur’s office, served on the Grade Appeals Committee, I was asked to represent my school on Student Lobbying Day at the New Jersey Legislature, volunteered for the First Book Initiative, teaching myself German and Russian, Phi Theta Kappa, Creative Writer’s Guild, I also submitted poetry to the New Yorker but in all likelihood it won’t get published.
Essays: I spent countless hours revising, rewriting, and critiquing them
You guys look like great candidates! I’m so excited to apply. I visited Washington Square Park and NYU for the first time last week and loved it.
Hi guys, I am also a transfer applicant for Spring 2017. Will post the stats later.
One thing that concerns me is whether there’s a admission rate difference between Spring and Fall transfers. I’ve heard comments here and there that Spring is harder since there are few spots available. Anyone has opinions on this?
@tjxlstate from what I’ve seen and heard it’s relatively the same. Going through the previous NYU spring transfer threads, there doesn’t seem to be much of a difference. It may not be the same at other schools though
I’m applying to NYU Tandon School of Engineering (used to be NYU Poly) for the spring 2017 semester as a computer science major.
I just wanted to know my chances:
Highschool GPA: 87/100
College GPA: 3.61 unweighted
Recommendation: Two good ones
EC: Internship at an online retail warehouse
Test scores: Not submitting because I’ve completed 32 credits already and will be receiving 13 more before this year ends.
@tsunamiii786 While your stats are good by most standards, I would say work on getting them higher. Most engineering school require students to have a 3.8 at the least! The Engineering school at NYU is probably even more competitive.
@jonesby I just wanted to say that you have some pretty impressive extra-curriculars. I think you have a good shot at getting in, seeing as you have such a high GPA to match those impressive extra-curriculars.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE CHANCE ME?
High School GPA: 3.33 (I know it is terrible)
College GPA: 3.84 (Will go up to 3.87 by the time I finish my last semester at my CC. I will send midterm report, though.)
Essays: Very good (I hired someone to help me with my personal essay.)
Letter of Recommendation from Professor: Ok
SAT: Not Submitting
I don’t know if i should wait out this semester and apply in the Spring so they can see my 3.87 GPA on paper. OR take a class over the winter intercession, an easy 3 unit class, and get it up to 3.88 GPA before submitting the transcript my spring semester for fall acceptance. (I don’t know because Calculus took a huge toll on my GPA. I got a C on it, but ALL of my OTHER grades are A’s. I felt horrible getting that C, but there’s nothing I can do now except continue to keep my GPA up.) But I also don’t want to stay around my CC any longer than I have to.
@Popcorn11201 Thank you! I think you have a good chance! Looking at other NYU transfer threads, there are people with 3.6’s getting accepted, so I don’t think your HS GPA will bring you down too much when juxtaposed with your great college preformance. They care about where you are now and why NYU is where you need to be the most. I’m in the same boat as you with the math course hurting your GPA and also not wanting to stay at my CC for another semester (I want to get some CAS Core requirements out of the way too). I also think submitting your app now would be better. A rigorous course like Calc shows you’re challenging yourself and that it was difficult. I know it’s cliché, but a C in Calc is seen in a different way than an A in Basket Weaving. Furthermore, submitting your app now will still allow you to submit an app for fall of next year if you so desire (NYU doesn’t allow two apps in the same calendar year so submitting a 2016 app and 2017 app would work). Plus if you applied a second time it will show your dedication to NYU. I hope that was helpful and we see each other on campus!
By the way, how are you guys affording NYU? Because I know NYU does not give out a lot of help for transfer students. I keep on hearing people tell me that when I bring up that I want to go to NYU. Still, like all of you guys, I do want to go there, if I get in, that is.
@Popcorn11201 I’ve been working and saving for a bit over a year now, although I know my savings will barely make a dent in NYU’s tuition cost. Loans are scary, but probably necessary if I’m accepted. I don’t know. I’m more focused on getting accepted first, and then I will decide how to navigate the payments.
I’m in an joint engineering program with NYU Tandon so they are familiar with the students that go to my school.
Applying to Tandon of course for mechanical engineering from a 4 year college.
College GPA: 3.83
Highschool GPA: 97/100 Weighted, 94/100 unweighted.
I’ve taken Chemistry, Physics 1, Calc 1, 2, English 1 and 2, Intro to C++ programming and Linear Algebra. Got A’s and A+'s in all except Calc 2.
Now I’m taking Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, physics 2 an vector mechanics.

My essays are pretty good and hopefully my recommendations are too. Been working on those essays for months.
I submitted my application a few weeks ago. @Popcorn11201 the only way I’m attending, if I’m accepted, is based on my financial aid and housing situation
