NYU alum discussing school/admissions

hi jwblue,

how much would bad senior grades affect an otherwise strong application? i applied early btw.

thanks

JWBlue- Its very nice to have you back, we all missed you!

HManx,

Depends on how bad the grades are and when in your senior year. If you've already been accepted and you screw around late in your senior year, you'd have to mess up pretty bad for them to revoke your acceptance...this rarely happens.

In the application process, sophmore and junior year grades are the most important, and big drops senior year may be viewed negatively. A very slight drop in grades will probably not kill you, though it obviously doesn't help.

Thanks Soprano...:).

Since I tend to get very busy with work at times, I do tend to "disappear" for a bit during certain periods...but I always get back in the game.

After you get acepted to college, exactly how bad can you do? I really dont feel like showing up to class much after people accepted to college lol

jwblue-If you could read your personal messages and respond if you get a chance, I would appreciate it. Thanks. You are a great deal of help to a lot of people here.

how do u check personal messages anyways, I dont see a link anywhere

Hey jwblue or anyone else (however i think i speak for us all when I say we respect your opinion the most)

Im applying regular decision, but it's definetly my first pick. Should I add a note in my application telling the add. office that it is my first choice school, and if addmitted I would commit myself. I know my word doesnt mean much, but does that mean anything to them?
Also, another quick question, if I am applying from an extremely small and competitive private school in PA, once they read the school profile, how much effect does that actually have? Me and my friends want to know if going to a private school screwed us over because we have to struggle to get a high GPA.
thanks again, we all appreciate the time you put into this so much.

never hurts! :) I think...if you ask them the same question to the admissions they might say it does not really matter...but i think it does. :) well, say it on the app. i don't think it's a negative...a positive or at leat nothing.

show that you love to goto NYU...goto their summer school like i did.

i would do something to show your committment to NYU so theyll know your going to go. like go to some event they have there and put it on your app or something

I took mostly IB classes and honors. Only one class wasnt advanced which was my elective. Math was a level ahead but not honors.

Im a junior right now and I plan on applying ed to CAS for pre-dentistry next year.

Sorry for putting you through all that but I would really appreciate some help. Thanks in advance!

no way to say, new SAT is going to change everything

You are far better than OK. However, you might want to raise your math score. C'mon! You are from India, you should know better. :)
It is always nice to hear from a person like you score 700 on verbal. Though Indians speak English fairly well for they were colonized by the British once for a long time. I am also a first generation immigrant from South Korea. :) but I got 620 on verbal... :( yes, horrible!

You should do some more ECs that are related to your anticipated major, which is in your case, pre-dental.

If you improve your SAT1 and do well on SATIIs (such as biology or subjects that are required (?) i am not sure what NYU wants from a pre-dental applicant) and actively participate in activities that are unique and related to the dental field, I think you have a good shot.

ha-ha-ha Kumon tutoring center? are you kidding me? ha-ha
you are the first Indian kid to going to Kumon. lololol

and your Arizona location does help you.
did you know that NYU favors kids with parents who are doctors? I've heard that rumor...but I am not sure

That's true. NYU will require the new SAT. However, Mystic221, just keep up the good work. It looks like you have a great chance.

lol I didnt get tutored from them I tutored other kids. Yea I was thinking the SAT I was a little to low for NYU. Im still preparing and planning on taking the new one in March. Thanks for the comments!

kjayson7, Explain the Arizona residenency thing to me.

How can I explain this?...hm....well, almost (red-state colleges too?) every college tries to bring in applicants from almost every damn town in the nation. However, it's impossible; if you did not know that, then you should not apply to NYU. :) but they do try, and that's what matters. They try very hard to get applicants from every state. At NYU, many of the kids are from New York, New Jersey and around there, mostly Mid-Atlantic states. But because they need to give this "diverse" image to the mass, they admit, sometimes, even not-so-well qualified applicants from underrepresented states such as Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and those other "forgotten" states around there.

Although your ethnicity might help you tiny bit, I think in your case it's the location that puts you up there. Indians usually do well on SATs and do have good GPAs like any other Asian immigrants. So, if you were from New York area, it is possible that you will have more disadvantages. Why? because you need to stand out from the "Indian" applicant pool. They all have high SAT scores and GPAs and good ECs. It is tough to stand out from that pool right? but because you are from Arizona, one of the underrepresented states, this puts you on top of the rest, but not so significantly. and plus you have good SAT scores and a good GPA so, you have really a good shot at NYU.

Best of luck man.

Go out and do something unique.
www.crossculturalsolutions.com
It's a volunteering organization. I participated in their Peru prison program in South America. This was important to me because I want to major in Social Work. They also do have some nursing, and medical related programs so go look around. or look into CARE. this will def help you.

God, if you were not an Asian, I would have not written this much. :)

good luck to you

I heard that, while Columbia favors a student who participated in a few activities but done for a long period of time, NYU favors a kid who has done many different and unique activities.

It is just a rumor man. :)

lol I appreciate it man thanks for ur help

JWBlue -

Applying: Gallatin School of Individualized Study ED

Stats:

GPA: My school doesn't do GPAs, but it would probably be about a B- or a B
SATI: 800 math, 740 verbal (1540)
SATIIs: 730 math 1c, 800 math 2c, 770 writing, 710 history
Classes: all APs offered and most Honors
ECs: Editorial positions on Newspaper, Drama/Musical, Community Service, Commended National Merit Scholar, MUDs

In 9th grade I took an independent study in philosophy and received an A

PM me if you want to see my essay or recs, don't trust me to be a judge of whether they're great or not. The essay is original, however - it's in the form of a debate over aspects of my personality.

Also PM me if you want to see my short answers, but I wrote a lot about why I'm interested in Gallatin (I'm a very independent student) and about MUDs - online text-based games that I use.

What do you think? I'm just hoping that they'll overlook my grades in favor of my high boards.

why such a bad average but good everything else?

laziness + lack of motivation in classes i'm not interested in.

that's why gallatin and a create-your-own-major program would be a perfect fit for me.

do you think they'll overlook the GPA? one plus is that i've taken one of the most challenging curriculums available - all APs available (only 3 were offered) and almost all honors courses available at my school.

i also go to a private Jewish school, which means that we have Hebrew and Judaic Studies courses as well - very tough curriculum.
