@ferrarivettel I’m trying to decide if I should apply to UC Berkeley and UCLA. The application is quite lengthy and I’ve heard mixed kids going from out of state (expensive and not worth the public university experience). I’m from Florida though so it’s rare kids will go to CA schools. What are the views on the UCs in CA?
I’m from Texas and am applying to UT Austin and A&M College Station. I’m also applying to UC Davis. NYU is (obviously) hands down my first choice, for a multitude of reasons. My second choice would be Davis. Even though it’s in a rural area, it’s beautiful and I want to get out of Texas. If I have to stay here, I will go to Austin first. I am also considering applying to Boston University.
Also, what is everyone’s major? I’m applying to Steinhardt for Nutrition/Food Science, but if I go elsewhere I will major in Nutrition.
I’m applying to BU, USC, UCLA, and Georgetown, but hopefully I’ll ever know if i got in to those schools or not!
I’m applying for Journalism/English, tho not every school offers journalism…
Anyone get an FA change yet(I haven’t)? Today is when they started happening last year…
No FA change for me.
Also, I’m applying to a bunch of ivies and schools like Carnegie mellon, UVA, Umich, and Wash U in St Louis (mostly for business) after the ed decision. This may seem really weird since I’m applying to NYU Stern ed, but the thing is that I already got into Kelley Business School (IU), which I’m decently happy with, so I’m just taking my chances for all the other schools.
@deller123 well UCs are good bargains for Californian kids, they are actually great schools for in-state prices.
For out-of-state kids, they are even stingier than NYU, so it’s not cheap to go there, even a bit expensive for public schools.
For California kids, in my high school in particular, we believe than only the Asian STEM nerds qualify for top UCs (LA and Berk). Fact is, LA and Berkley are amazing schools that are so hard to get into. But it’s a lot of money for out-of-state students, so think about how you would like an 50%-Asian community, the schools are very competitive internally, academic pressure is high, but job opportunities in California are wonderful. So I think you already kinda’ know if UCs are for you
Back to the NYU topic, I also received no FA changes lol. But I try to not think too much about it to not be let down if I get rejected.
no update yet…
I am curious if anyone had gotten any FA changes yet. I mean in the last year’s discussion applicants were a lot more involved and people knew what was happening around them.
@ferrarivettel Thanks for your input on UC schools! I’m starting to think I’m not going to apply. Large private schools are one thing (like NYU), but I’m afraid you can easily get lost in the shuffle at large public universities. Going to focus in on more medium sized schools.
On the FA changes, I went and looked through the forums for last year and it looks like Tuesday (tomorrow for us) was the day people started reporting FA changes. However, it definitely appears that it was a spread out event. I expect to get at least one person who posts with a change by tomorrow, but don’t think not having a change will mean anything for the next week or two.
No FA change yet
Don’t know what my chances are…

Due to my school it seems on our scattergrams I have a 50/50 shot, but wanted to get someone else’s opinion(I’m applying for CAS biochem)
@T1as34d Not sure, with that GPA and SAT. The AP classes might save you, and if you have a great essay and letter of rec you’d have a shot. Just my opinion but I’d say you have a 50% chance! Best of luck!
No FA change yet but I noticed a name change…My real name is hard to pronounce so I go by a different name. Last week when their admissions counselor contacted me for additional materials I replied using my nickname. And now under my FA status it’s showing up as my nickname instead of my legal name. (For Application Status it’s still the same, though)
Not sure if this means anything…
Can anyone chance me?

Thx guys, best of luck.
@NolanZhang0346 Your stats seem right on point, but the pool for international applicants is even more competitive, I believe. For your rec’s, I’m just a little confused as to how you “tried everything to ensure the quality.” Did you not waive your ferpa?? If you did then there’s nothing you could do about it
@chlxbb same for my D. Full name for Application Status. Nickname for Financial Aid (but her name is not difficult to pronounce) We aren’t requesting FA. And no one called to ask us about any nickname.
@remuwannabe I think it’s because on the common app it asked if we had any nicknames. If the name under her FA status is the same one she put on her common app then I guess that’s just what NYU does to everyone. No idea why they even bother to do such things haha.
@chlxbb thx for replying this quick, by everything I could I mean I tried my best to guide my teachers into writting things that are most relevant to my major interest, and I did so by giving em a short resume made by myself. I also invited only the teachers that like me the most, like I got a A+ in my ap sta and the teacher really liked me, and I ask my latin teacher with whom I founded robotics club with. Of course I have waived my rights, but thx for asking.
So I just had an NYU Interview. One of the question asked can be rephrased as “did you have any help, whether from friends, counselors, English teachers, family,… with your Common App essay?” (of course in our interview it sounds much less serious)
Obviously, I told them that I did once in a while ask a friend or parents to review and give comments on the essay for me. Also, my counselor took a look and edited it a little bit.
I’d be amazed if anybody didn’t reach out for help with his or her essay. And I don’t know about other high schools, but all counselors from mine look at all of his or her students’ application essays to make sure there wasn’t anything inappropriate (one of my peers happened to choose the “failure” topic, and ended up writing a horrible confession). So for me, the answer “no” to that question was just not believable.
But thinking back, I’m concerned. Will they disregard my essay because they’ll think it’s “not original”. The essay is a strong part in mine, or anybody’s, application and I certainly don’t want to be put in such a disadvantage like that.
