@correkid UGHHHH!!! I read that they did but yeah now I see that they don’t. I hope they do what you said for highest subscores, then they can see I’m good on everything except freaking science.
If I get a 29 like you I will be happy. I just want to be in their range of scores.
Are we able to take the act in october even if we’re applying ED? I don’t want my advisor to tell me to get my score up and go for RD rather than applying ED

@leggggy I believe that you can take the September ACT and still be able to apply ED, as you will definitely get your scores back in time, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the case for the October one. Even if you a 28 you should still have a shot. Not gonna lie, a 27 is a bit low, but if you have really good ECs, you should be fine. But then again, I have a 29 and am really concerned that I won’t get in. Who knows. I guess we’ll find out December 15th.

@correkid my advisor told me i should aim for a 31 or 32 to feel comfortable but even with my super low score she said it was “doable,” so that means its even more doable for you!
tests just aren’t my thing. i think it’s every little bit that helps. i do have great ECs and mostly all A’s, but of course having a 29+ on the ACT would help me just that much more.
but you’re right–who knows! either it’ll be a great holiday season or a sad one! good luck to you!!

i went to one of the NYU info sessions in my home town and they said to not stress over test scores because they are truely looking for the diverse student. so while the scores obviously matter, i think the essays are going to play a HUGE part in whether or not we get in.

if yall wanna get a head start on the application the common app has a preview of the new application online:
https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2012/2012-13FY-FinalHighlightedPreview.pdf

its basically the same one as last year.

@audrey13 wow, that’s actually really reassuring. I agree with that. I went to an information session and it really seemed like they were looking more at essays and ECs. I actually talked to one of the student employees at the bookstore and they said that their scores and stats were extremely subpar, but their essay was “heartwrenching” and that was why they got in. I also talked to another faculty member and they told me (this was back in 2009) that NYU is starting to focus much less on test scores and more on the holistic application. So I would say that’s good for someone like me who just has the average ACT and GPA.

I’m also applying for ED1 this year. Won’t bother posting my full stats, but I’m a Hispanic female from New York (suburbs, about an hour away from the city), 3.9 GPA, public high school that sends a lot of kids to NYU.
Right now, I have a 1990 on my SATs (the picture puts me as 1650, but those were estimates from my PSAT scores). I would like to retake them today, but am not sure if I have time considering the ED deadline
I have some ECs and several APs under my belt - nothing special, really, but I also have a job that takes up most of my time and I do a lot of volunteer work locally.

I took a screenshot of the scattergram for my school so you guys can get an idea where you stand, there seems to be a fair amount of variety.

@fozziepear Thanks for posting the scattergram!! My school does GPA on an 100 scale like yours, and idk how to convert mine correctly to a 4.0 scale. On an 100 scale, my GPA is a 95.08. The accepted gpa for NYU on my naviance says 93.74…very interesting, as it is basically the exact accepted gpa as your school.
This is beginning to validate my belief that NYU is in fact much more numbers based than we would like to think…

wooo, just got my ap scores!
apush- 4
ap lang & comp- 5
ap micro- 3
ap macro- 3

I was so happy with these, but… I don’t think any of them will give me credit for nyu. apush was for a high school graduation requirement, as was lang, and the nyu website says that if courses were taken for requirements, they don’t count. and micro/macro’s 3s won’t count either…
oh well, still super happy with these.
anyone else?

also, how can I boost up my ec’s? they’re a lot better for middle school, but I know I can’t do that… here’s all I have now:

nhs member for all of high school (i’m going to run for pres next year, but I don’t know if I’ll win…)
Varsity Letter in Tennis is 9th grade
Johnson & Wales University Career explorations program
Child care (babysitting, but I’m only 15 & can’t get a job where I live, so I want to put it)
Booster Club volunteering
PTSO volunteering
Vacation Bible School volunteering
Church Nursery volunteering
Red Cross Hospital Volunteer

It looks like nothing when it’s split up into volunteering, work, and activities, so does anyone know if nyu/ the common app splits it up? Is there any way to make this look more impressive? ecs is the only things I’m really worried about…

while that is all typed up I might as well give the rest of my stats so someone can chance me…

3.92uw gpa
4.04 w

2050 SAT (670cr, 680w, 700m)
30 ACT (31 english, 26 math, 31 science, 32 reading, 30 combined english/writing- 9 essay)

I think my essay will be pretty good- I’m a decent writer, and my brother (who was accepted to NYU, and there now) can help me edit it.

Teacher recommendation should be good- my AP lang teacher will be writing it and she should be finding out I got a 5 on her exam in a few days, haha.

Lastly, I’m not at a prestigious school or anything, but I’m a military kid living in Japan going to a DoDDS school, which supposedly looks good (even though DoDDs schools are really easy…)

Does anyone know if it looks bad if the teacher writing the rec has only known me for a year? I don’t have any of the teachers i had in 10th grade, and I moved the summer before that, so… yeah.

oh, and senior year schedule will be:
ap psych
ap gov
ap lit
ap world
ap env science
french II
journalism

@nyu427 Yeah, and this fact has me a little worried…my average is up from the one seen on the scattergram, and it is in the range for NYU applicants from my school, but I’m still worried that since so many people from my school apply, it won’t be enough to make me a really viable candidate.

If anyone can answer this, if you apply ED to NYU, do you really have a better chance of being accepted? Obviously it doesn’t improve your chances by a huge margin, but I’m curious as to what others have heard/experienced.

@nyu427 @fozziepear Naviance uses weighted GPAs for there scattergrams, though. Well, at least they do for my school. It says the average for my school is a 4.1 and I have a 4.25. It also says the average accepted is 26 so I don’t know how reliable those scattergrams are and I don’t know if it proves they are more stat based. If anything, my scattergram proves the exact opposite. (Granted, I’m from Chicago and only about 5 people apply each year and only 2 or 3 get in. None ever attend)

Here’s some of my school’s info

http://oi49.■■■■■■■.com/nl5to6.jpg

And here’s my school’s scattergram

http://oi47.■■■■■■■.com/1zfhffm.jpg

The thing is, my school only does weighted GPA on the 100 scale. And also, you do have a better chance getting in ED, the acceptance rate goes up 10% or so compared to normal decision. But really, it all depends on the applicant pool we’re up against. Many people choose to apply ED because they feel they are less qualified for the school overall, and ED will help them get in versus normal decision (hopefully I’m making sense here…)

That’s a good point.
Not really sure what to nake of the scattergram you posted, correkid…there isn’t an ACT graph for my school so I can’t post one for comparison, but naviance says the average for my school is 29. Guess it’s not completely black and white.

@nyu427 I think NYU and other colleges for that matter recalculate your GPA. I think the logic is that it would be unfair if your school only uses weighted GPAs, and then another school only uses unweighted or both. Also, different schools award different point systems for GPA. Since your school uses a 100 point scale, it’s almost inevitable that they will. I’m pretty sure that they will calculate your GPA so that it will be unweighted. I’m sure that will still by fine. As long as you did well in your honors and AP classes it shouldn’t be too much different. Well mine is about .6 points higher, but I’m sure you’ll be fine.

@fozziepear I know what you mean. On my Naviance, it too says that the average ACT is 29 under the admissions tab. I think that scattergram is really rare and strange. As you can see, kids who had great GPAs and ACT scores didn’t get in, while mediocre scores got in. I really think that NYU isn’t so much stats based and is more holistic.

Oh and anyone know if males are more likely to get in? Since there’s a 60:40 female to male ratio? Obviously this won’t get you in, but if you have the same stats and qualifications let’s say, would they be more likely to choose the male? Or is that just a myth?

Im still hoping that NYU is more holistic with applications like they say. I think im the only one at my school and maybe even in my city (since its a small suburb in the south) interested in NYU so that might help me? As for genders i bet it depends on the program (like maybe females have an easier time getting into business/engineer programs and males in humanities? im just spit balling here i dont actually know anything) If your gender makes you unique to a program than it will help but other than that i doubt it will matter. and i think NYU makes gpa unweighted whether or not the schools show it to them because we have to keep in mind that various schools weigh grades differently (for ex. on a 100 point grading scale my school adds 3 points for honors and 5 for ap… that could be different at your schools)
