NYU ED1 Class of 2017 Discussion Thread

I intend on double majoring in journalism and art history. I have tons of journalism awards and accolades, but I think the applicant pool is a little more competitive that art history would be. I don’t have much art history experience, but I know that I want to major in it just because I have a passion for it. That being said, would it be better to apply as my intended major being art history rather than journalism?

Anyone know if we can only put one major down when we apply?

@correkid, I’m almost positive that intended major/gender together could help your chances. for instance, if i was a female applying to their engineer program it would give me a boost since the engineering field for women is really low.
they’re not gonna be like “oh hey a male, let’s accept him!” but I’m sure they will think about it when they see your transcript and when they see that you’re qualified enough to get in. and again, it probably depends on the program/school you’re applying to.

Hey guys, wondering if there are also any other Brit kids applying ED1. Here’s my breakdown:

College: Gallatin with a concentration in fashion/costume design
Ethnicity/Gender: British Chinese/Female
School: Private, top 50 in UK
ACT: 25 (appallingly low, I know… but NYU can take A2 predictions instead of ACTs))
22 in English, 26 in Mathematics, 27 Reading, 24 Science, 9 Writing
GCSE grades: 5A*s 5As 2Bs
AS predictions: AABB (waiting for results)
Subjects taken: Mathematics-Pure & Applied, Chemistry, Biology, Art (Most likely dropping biology)

E.Cs:

  • Co chairman of my school’s Amnesty International club
  • Alto singer in St Helen’s Singers (Sixth form choir) , Choir
  • Tuned Percussion player in my school’s Concert band
  • Dressmaking classes
  • Wardrobe mistress for school productions: I have to design/source costumes for the productions and I lead a small team.
    -Grade 5 Violin

Work Experience:

  • Costumier in the National Youth Theatre : Only 10 out of 250 were accepted.
  • Wardrobe Assistant/ DSM at the English National Ballet School’s Summer performances 2011- 2 weeks
  • Interned with Snow PR at the PPQ a/w 2012 show at London Fashion Week for 1 week.
  • Interned with Beth Fenton for 1 week. She has worked for Vogue, Elle, TeenVogue and I have been helping her with her stylings for Coldplay.
  • Work for Tate Collective- plan and assist on their events including Infinite Kusama and Late at Tate.

Essays:

  • Talking about experience with a Bipolar mother and paranoid Schizophrenic father and how I view the world.
  • EC essay would be on my work experience at the English National Ballet School

Recs: Possibly be using the ones from my UCAS which is where all my teachers write one and I’ll select the best two. Mathematics would be strong and Chemistry/ Art too.

I would possibly mix mathematics or business with the fashion, perhaps study how algorithms or other statistical models can predict fashion trends. Or how mathematics affect proportions and how different types of bodies dress in certain ways to balance the disproportions. And if I chose business, well that’s fairly obvious.

I’m going to visit NYU in Aug and ask them about my low ACT scores. I think there’s no point me putting them on as they’ll take my predictions for next year.

Audrey13, I am a rising Freshman in CAS so I can tell you that NYU’s admissions is truly holistic. I did okay on my SATs (1370/2060), and I was admitted to CAS, while I know people with better SAT scores (2100-2150), who were instead of the liberal studies program. I think this was because of my essays, which I put a lot of time into. As long as you can demonstrate your interest in NYU and your desire to live and succeed in NYC, I think you will be fine.

Aloveforvogue, your resume looks great (except for your ACT scores which are low and your A-levels, which I don’t know how to read) so I think you definitely have a shot at Gallatin. That being said, I would retake the ACTs in the fall if possible to improve your chances of being admitted. Even with low ACT scores, I would say that it is definitely possible to be admitted if you write good essays. However, your odds will increase significantly if you can get those scores up to a 28-29.

@zachattack341 thanks! Also, I’ve heard that nyu doesn’t look at the writing score on the SAT (I’ve only seen this on forums) is this true? Because that’s my highest score (I got a 740)
… Without it I only have a 1280.

@ZackAttack341 Thanks for your kind words. I’m planning on retaking the ACTs in oct. But not sure if I can make the Nov. 1st deadline. I also have no idea how to write the essays as I have had no help from school since they have had no experience in applying to US unis.

aloveforvogue- There are a ton of online resources to help you figure out how to write the essays. Let me see if I can find any.

Good luck!

@Tniemann Thanks so much!!

No problem!

For those interested in checking out stats of incoming class of 2016, these are as per Bloomberg 2012, might help you get an idea of your ‘chances’…

Has anyone already started drafting their common app essay? I’ve started it, and now I’m really freaking out and already starting to second guess myself. I feel like it’s not going to be what they’re looking for. Writing about Andy Warhol and his influence on me seems like it won’t compare to a lot of the amazing experiences that a lot of kids will be writing about.

Also, random question: I got a C in honors Chem sophomore year. Will NYU hate this and will it sacrifice anything? It’s the only C, and then I got straight As junior year, except for 1 B in honors physics. My UW GPA is a 3.64 and Weighted its a 4.25. Do they see an actual breakdown of all your grades, or do they just see the GPA???

They see your transcript so yeah they would see the C.

Don’t worry about the CommonApp lol, I’m writing about my idol Dwyane Wade.

Anyone know about the recommendation requirements? I read online that 1 is required, but no more than 2 teacher recommendations. But does count for your counselor’s? Can we send our counselors, and then 2 teachers? Or a counselor and only 1 teacher?

@iwannaSUCCEED
I saw your previous post in this thread about getting a 2170 on your sat. For Stern, that’s a great score and I don’t think you have to retake it! But it also depends on your gpa…what is your gpa?

hi all. i’m joining the boat of nervous applicants to NYU ED1.

INFO

College: Stern (Finance) OR CAS/Courant (Applied Math) QUESTION ABOUT THIS (See below)
Ethnicity/Gender: Indian/Male
School: Public, extremely competitive
GPA: 3.94 W… (out of 5… KILL ME -_-)… idk about UW. there is an upward trend tho
SAT: 2340 (740 CR, 800 M, 800 W) (could this compensate for my gpa?)
SAT II: 800 Math I & Math II, 730 Chem, 710 Literature
Taken APs: CompSci 5, BC Calc 5, Chem 4, Physics 4, US History 4
Senior year APs: Psychology, Statistics, Spanish

Extremely rigorous schedule sans 2 years ae history (frosh/soph) and 1 year ae bio (cuz i suck at it)… everything else is honors

Awards & Accolades:
-Nat’l Spanish Exam Gold Medal, Perfect Score 8th grade (Can/should I include this?)
-AIME Qualifier Junior year
-Gold President’s community service award - '10, Bronze '11, Bronze (predicted) '12
-Massachusetts Math League Round II Qualifier Award Junior Year
-TiE Young Entrepreneurs Competition. Got 2nd place & our team won $3000. I was CFO of mock corporation… that’s what drove me to want to do Finance in college. Junior Year

ECs:
Student Council 2 years
National Honor Society 1 year
500+ hours of volunteer work
Robert Creeley Poetry Foundation 3 years
Math Team 4 years (Captain Senior year)
All-Male A Cappella Group 4 years
Bollywood A Cappella Group (disputably HS Bollywood a cappella grp in nation) 2.5 years (I founded this)
Madrigal Singers 1 year (elite renaissance singing group… takes top 20 singers in school)
Rabindrasangeet (Bengali “folk” music) private lessons for ~10 years (idk if this counts)
TiE Young Entrepreneurs 1 year (SEE AWARDS)

Recommendations:
1 good from Math dept head (also my bc calc teacher) - loves me (i think) but apparently doesn’t write too many recs out of the ordinary.
1 good from jr year english teacher - knows my personality very well and finds me amiable and amusing

Essays:
Um idk? where is everyone getting the essay topics from? I thought no common app until Aug 1st… I mean i’m almost done w/ the “Why NYU” essay but that’s it xD.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Is it worth trying out for Stern? I’d really really really love to go to Stern but I’m pretty happy going to Courant as well. I’ve heard that CAS has a higher acceptance rate/lower qualifications than Stern. Is Stern ED1 out of reach (in which case i should opt for Courant?) or is it still worth a shot?

THANK YOU ALL :smiley: and if anyone needs to be sold on NYU, just talk to me… i’ll give you a pep talk ;).

@dreamer

My UW is like a 3.5ish so thats pretty low, but I have a huge upward trend.

Thats pretty much my only concern!

Thanks btw

@iwannaSUCCEED

Yeah, it is kind of low but the upward trend could help you!

Good luck :)

@iwannaSUCCEED

Trying to PM you but your inbox is full so I can’t send it lol

@cneogy Frankly, your GPA is just too low. I honestly don’t even think that your high SAT score will be able to compensate for it. Especially since your Weighted GPA is only a 3.94/5. So that would be a 3.15 out of 4 when you put it on the 4 point scale, which is very low to begin with. Your unweighted GPA would have to be worse than that, (most likely) so I would estimate that your UW GPA would be around a 2.7 or somewhere in that range, which is just way too low for NYU.
