NYU ED1 Class of 2017 Discussion Thread

@Correkid
o.0 My UW after soph year was a 3.4… by now its prlly a 3.5 close to 3.6… So i’m not totally sure how you’re getting that. But thanks for the advice :). Any further comments?

Thanks!

@cnoegy

Then that would mean your UW is higher than your W…

Yeah…don’t see how your unweighted can be higher than your weighted. But you could be right. Based off of your weighted, your chances arent amazing.

Maybe he/she means out of 5, still? A 3.5 UW out of 5 would be 2.8 which is what you said. While it is low, I think a combination of your excellent SATs, some good essays, and solid ECs, they might be able to lok past it. The upward trend could also help- if you could give us the breakdown it would help too. If you majorly screwed up in freshman & even sophomore year, but got back on track for junior year, your chances are better.
If you’re really set on going, I’d apply ED to CAS, and try to do an internal transfer. Everything you have is much better than my application, but Stern is such a competitive school that I’m not sure…
good luck!

maybe it’s just me… but i was almost completely sure that my UW was 3.4/4… Um maybe its because I got my lowest grades in AE classes (World Hist (B), US I (B), Bio (B-)) which would bring my W gpa down more than my UW?

Also… i’m pretty sure at our school A-, A, and A+ are all 4’s
and then B+ is 3.75 or something and then B 3.5, B- 3.25… except it may be like B+ 3.5 B 3.0… I honestly forget… But i’m almost positive about the A- through a+ all 4.0

@cneogy You know better than us about your own scores. I don’t know how your school scales things, but GPA is really weird so I’m sure you do have a 3.4/4 UW. If that’s the case, I think your SATs and ECs can make up for that.

So do you think I should still try for stern?

Sent from my SPH-D600 using CC

There’s a thread on here called “junior sternie answering questions” and they stated that they were in CAS and transferred to Stern.

I know that stern is a bit more competitive, but I also know internal transfers are somewhat difficult.

Gallatin is also a backdoor option. You would be able to take classes at stern and create your own major that has a concentration in whatever aspect of stern you want.

Just some options.

Yeah. See the problem for me about going to CAS/Courant is that I don’t want to ED for Courant and get stuck there. Stern is my top choice, but I can’t really say the same about Courant. I’m not familiar with the Gallatin backdoor, but I’ll look into it. I’d prefer to be a bonafide Sternie if possible though.

Hi everyone, I have some sort of off-topic random questions:

-Can students applying to Tisch get LSP’d? (please say yes!)

-You know how when you take the SAT/ACT they let you send to colleges for free, was that a bad idea? lol. I got a 1740 (YIKES!) and a 28 (ugghh) but I’ve been doing test prep and im going to be taking the ACT in September (aiming for a 32. I believe I can do it, I just freaked out the first time I took both tests. nbd. lmao), how will they look at this?

^ they also have all of my AP test score: AP Human Geo 4, AP World History 4,
AP Lang and Comp 5, AP US History 4
So…what are they going to do, seeing as though they have access to EVERYTHING

                    -___________- I wish someone would have told me about this earlier!

-heey, is anyone applying to Tisch? if so for hhwhaat? ^__^

If I’ve never sent NYU any of my ACT scores or AP scores, is that bad? My intention was just to send them when I applied (ACT) or if I got in (AP).

Does this show them that I’m not interested or like it’s not my first choice?

@correkid
I don’t think this is bad, but I’m pretty sure it costs more money to send scores to colleges after the fact, but you can do it and I don’t see any advantage to sending when you take them, other than being sure they have them. As for AP scores, collegeboard suggests that you only send the scores when you’re a senior, and already know what college you are going to. I think that’s because most colleges don’t consider them, but I think NYU will if you sent them. If they’re good scores, you can send them now if you want to spend the extra money and think they’d make a good addition to application, but I wouldn’t worry about it, lots of kids don’t send scores until after they take the test.

@tniemann thanks, that’s what my counselor told me, too. But I just wanted to make sure. I don’t mind spending the money for ACT or AP scores to be sent.

I took the ACT 5 times though, (1 of them was state mandated and did not include writing) and I will be sending my first score, since it was the best. This will most likely be a strike against me, since they will see that I took it so many times and I assume they would like to see improvement…?

starontherise: yes Tisch applicants can be put into LSP. Usually, involuntarily since LSP is not nearly as desirable, but I do know a friend of mine who wanted Tisch film, but is stuck in LSP for a couple years before he transfers.

Correkid: They won’t care (and I don’t think even know the difference) of when you send ACT scores, or which one you sent. They’ll just see what they’re given and evaluate.

cneology: Don’t do backdoor Gallatin. You can take some of the classes sure: but you won’t get the Stern degree, which is what you really want, and probably lose out to Sternies on 99 of 100 jobs that you apply to. Gallatin is a route for if you’re interested in business like an entrepreneur and want to start your own, so you don’t really care about how others see what degree you have. Stern is for if you plan on trying to impress someone, i.e. getting a job or grad school. CAS transfer is tough, you’ll have to kill it with the GPA. Just give Stern a shot…frankly, if you couldn’t get it the first time, you probably won’t get it if you tried transfer.

@Generalgao93 Thanks! Do you know if ReMu applicants can get LSP’d to?

Does anyone know if I still have the power to decide what scores that they see (ACT or SAT) because they have both :/

@Generalgao93… And anyone else: How do you think my chances are if I do apply ED Stern?

Also remembered that a major EC that i have is that I’m a professional chess player with a rating over 1800… 1818 i think.

I’m concerned that my senior year schedule is not rigorous enough:

1.Yearbook
2. AP Marcro/Micro Economics
3. College Western Literature and Thought (more advanced than AP, but I don’t know how schools will know this)
4. Art 1
5. P.E. Leaders
6. AP Calc AB
7. Journalism
8. AP Gov

I’m not taking a lunch, and didn’t my junior year either, but I’m a little nervous that classes like yearbook and journalism will detract from the APs. Even though I intend on majoring in journalism. I also plan on double majoring in Art. PE is required, so I am going to be a leader. Having only 3 (4 if you count College western lit and thought) and no 4th year of science scares me. (Im trying to swap out APES for Art) Anyone want to way in?
