@starontherise from what I’ve heard, they take your best test score. So it’s fine if you sent them both in I think.

@correkid As long as your taking the most rigorous classes your school offers I think your good. For me, I won’t be taking a science this year, but I already have my credits and I plan on more of a journalism/comm major so I don’t think it’s a big deal (my guidance counselor also said it was ok). Plus im also taking 5 APs this year. Take what you want to as long as it looks like your trying your hardest to be in the challenging classes. My school doesn’t offer a ton of AP classes so I’m taking what I can… But if you go to a more competitive school then it could be a bigger problem and NYU might expect you to challenge yourself more. But then again I have no clue what your school is like.

As for “out there” essays, I decided on the “choose your own” for the Common App essay and constructed a marvellous piece about whether or not humans should colonize space. Well actually, I just recycled one of my AP English Lang and Comp essays and condensed it so that it fit within the allotted word count… Moral of the story: remember kids, don’t delete your high school essays after they are graded. You never know when they’ll come in handy. For one of the NYU supplements, I chose to write about the aglet (you know, the little plastic thing on the end of a shoelace). Seven weeks later, I got my Stern acceptance email.

Awesome. Obviously I am going to get some of my teachers and counselors to look over my essays, but does anyone know of any other sites, people, or places that can proof-read/give advice?

Hi guys, I’m from Hong Kong and I wonder what are my chances for Stern ED1 as an international applicant

Full IB:
Chinese A SL 6
English A SL 6

Physics SL 6
Music HL 6
Econ HL 7
(considered most rigorous subject choice in my year)
→ Converted to GPA is probably 3.75-3.85

SAT:
last year: 1650
Now: around 1900s to 2000s, hope to get to the 2100s in next few months
(will they appreciate my huge improvements?)

ECs:

Class representative - 2 years

Hook:
Had a small business (that is likely to get partnership from a big company), and also serves as ecommerce
Uptrending Grades
Essay - Quite unique, integrated music and my entrepreneurial spirit

Anyone else have any input on my chances? Thanks generalgao for yours :).

I forgot to mention that I’ve been interning at an MIT research lab in RFID technology (absolutely nothing to do with business) this summer and will most likely coauthor a paper about our experiments and get it published.

Also I have tutored 3 people in math and significantly boosted each of their grades.

yep harrison I’m applying stern as of now. I mean I’d love to help you… but imo, it’s kinda hypocritical to ask for chances and then give them… b/c if i give them i should be able to chance myself… which i really can’t. The only thing i can say is… that Small business hook prlly is the best hook you have. maybe write an essay about it?

@cneogy you’ve gotten chanced more than the average user. Your gpa is low, sat scores are high. Good ECs. Solid chance, but gpa might be the dealbreaker. Stern might be a bit of a stretch. You’d be more in line for CAS or LSP, but stern doesn’t defer to LSP…

@Correkid: sorry :-/. I’ll stop asking i guess lol. Thanks for the input. If I did well first quarter senior year, would that somewhat compensate?

@cneogy no, sorry, I didn’t mean it like that, you’re fine. I would do the same thing. If you apply RD then yes, your senior grades will compensate. If you’re doing ED, (which would help you) you wouldn’t be showing them those grades. So it’s a tradeoff. If I were you, I’d do ED, rather than trying to get your grades up. Your GPA is not terrible by any means.

Hey guys can you chance me for stern?

@help4college To be honest, your GPA is just too low. I have a 29 as well, and I honestly feel hindered because of it, so if I were you, I would aim for somewhere in the 32+ range. But your GPA is gonna kill you.

@harrison0723 I am not familiar with IB or international students, but your GPA is very good and your SATs (if they are in the 2000 area) look good as well. As long as you’re above a 1950 or 2000, you should be good. I would say you’re a solid candidate, especially with your ECs. Write a good essay and I’d say you’re very likely.

@help4college You’re applying to Stern? I’m going to be blunt and say that a 3.1 is not good enough for Stern, and even CAS… Your ACT should really be in the 30’s too. If I were you, I would not ED to Stern (if you really want to get into NYU) and instead try CAS… Or there might be that option that you check off to get placed into another school if Stern rejects you and in that case, definitely do that.

I have 2300 on the SATs and ~3.6 (91/100) UW gpa (competitive NYC public school) but the problem is I had around a 3.8 in freshman/sophomore year (mostly As, some B+s) and then my grades took a serious hit junior year (some A-, some Bs, and one C but in an AP class where I scored high on the AP). My counselor knows my situation well enough to be able to explain some of the situation in her rec but I know that can only go so far. How negatively will this impact me if I try to do decently first quarter senior year / do I have a good chance at all??

Well you know, my gpa is so low because I didnt do well freshman and sophomore year. I was simply just bored and not challenged at all. After I found out what I was interested (business leadership) is when I really picked things up academically. I have a goal to actually entrepreneurize something that is needed today and could help humanity for the best. That’s why I think I should be able to achieve the best training possible to help the whole world progress

Well I guess you need to try to convey this to the admission staff but I doubt they’ll accept it as an excuse… Yes, it’s great that something “clicked” and you realized that you want to work hard in school however, you still have to face the consequences. I’m sure that’s what an admissions counselor will think…
