NYU ED1 Class of 2017 Discussion Thread

How much does visiting the school and frequently contacting your regional admissions officer help?

Visiting the school definitely helps (especially w/ NYU) since it is such a unique campus.

As for contacting your regional director, you can easily go from outgoing to annoying. I honestly wouldn’t do this as they probably all know an applicant’s intentions when he/she is contacting them.

has anyone been able to contact their regional director? I have emailed mine several times with questions (over the course of 4 months maybe) and have never received a reply. Do these people tend to not email back? Would it be better to call?

@audrey13 I’ve emailed mine about 4 times with valid questions and he has emailed me within 1 or 2 days. I’m sure you can email another counselor, or call.

I disagree with Nyusternie2016, I think asking valid questions spaced apart by a month or two is responsible and shows your interest.

Helps in terms of letting you get a better understanding of the school and seeing if it fits or helps in terms of increasing your admissions chances?
Definitely yes if it’s the first case. Questionable in the second case, it won’t improve your chances by any significant manner at all.

Do you guys think an awesome transcript/application/essay could help distract from the fact that my ACT score is on the lower side for NYU? I’m not like way out of their range but so far that’s the weakest thing on my application. I suck at standardized tests, I can’t help it, even with months of prep. I’m taking it for a third and final time in September, hopefully I can bring it up a few points!
Also, I’m applying to Tisch for directing, so maybe a lower test score isnt as bad as if I was applying for a different major. but then again, I know it counts majorly.
HELP :(

@leggggy what is your ACT score?

I hate to repeat my question but no one answered the first time around… :frowning: sorry!
Basically, high SAT but 3.6 gpa (albeit very elite public school) due to a very very bad junior year that my counselor may be able to shed some light on in her rec
Do I have a chance with ED?

3.6 is in range so you definitely have a chance ED. Don’t worry!

@leggy…it’s Tisch, your standardized testing scores are probably the least important thing on the transcript (slight exaggeration, but you get the idea), so the answer to your question is yes - you can easily make up for it.

@correkid right now a 27, ouch I know. But I will get higher on the sept one, believe it or not all of my individual scores were 30+ except science which was so embarrassingly low because I have major test anxiety and basically suck at science :frowning: But I do believe besides test scores, my transcript is really pretty good
@generalgao93 really? We were told it’s 50/50 but maybe it won’t be a huge red flag since they’ll be looking more at me as an artist. Also, do you know much about their directing program’s competitiveness? I know it’s tish and ā€œimpossibleā€ no matter what you apply to but I usually only hear about people applying for acting or MT

Yeah, like i said, it was a bit of an exaggeration, but definitely less important than if you were applying to, say, Stern. No clue on the competitiveness of each individual program, sorry.

If I apply Ed 1 for stern and check the box that allows me to be considered for CAS, and I only get accepted for CAS not Stern, am I required to attend CAS?

@Lb4life no. It says on the supplement that you will not be required to attend.

Thanks aubrey

@NYUSternie2016

Could you comment on my stats as well? it’s on this page: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1356809-nyu-ed1-class-2017-discussion-thread-9.html

Really want to go to Stern…Your comments are very much appreciated!

My admissions person Wont answer any of my emails so maybe y’all can help me:
I’m doing a summer internship at a film company and the executive producer said she wants to write me a college recommendation for working so many hours this summer. Since she is not a teacher, can I still send this to NYU? She hasn’t written it yet, but what format would it have to be in? (since the teacher evaluation from the common app probably isn’t what I’m looking for) would I just attach it along with all my other common app/supplement things?

@audrey13 from what I understand, if you’re applying to tisch they will want an additional teacher rec from a director, art teacher, etc that is sent directly to tisch in addition to your nyu application that contains your other academic teacher recs. if you are just applying to CAS though, I don’t think they will want a rec from a film teacher.
However, I might have misunderstood things and I don’t want to give you incorrect info so someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

I Am applying to steinhardt. My internship mainly had to do with communications above all else since the production company does not have a set (it’s a non profit). I was just wondering if a Rec would help me since i plan to major in communictions.

Unless Steinhardt has its own special supplement in the application, I don’t think NYU will take any other recommendations beyond the teachers and guidance counselor.
