Hey!
So I am a senior in high school... I got accepted to good schools and have narrowed it down to: UCLA and NYU. I really want to go to NYU but what is holding me back is that UCLA is a better ranked school and its 1/4 the price..If i do go to NYU, will it be really hard to get accepted to UCLA med school? I heard that if you go to ucla undergrad you have a better chance of getting into their med school...what should i doo!? I currently live in Los Angeles now...if i go to NYU and apply to ucla med school..would i be considered a california resident? and does ucla give priority to their own graduates? and roughly how much is medical school per year? I want to work in Los angeles too so I want to get my graduate degree from UCLA medical school and work at a hospital in LA. I also want to go to NYU for my undergrad to have a different "experience" but I don't want to go to NYU risking that I would have a higher chance of getting into UCLA med school if I went to ucla for undergrad..I need some professional help..MAJOR HELP..PLEASE!

statistically, you have a higher shot of getting into UCLA’s med school from UCLA. My guess is this has to do with the fact that since it’s their own med school, they teach their students exactly what they’re looking for in the premed programs. It’s not retardedly high or anything, it’s like 20% i think for David Geffen (although i can’t find where i read this online, so take it with a grain of salt). but realize that DG only accepts like 4% of applicants, so it’s very competitive.

i can’t really comment on whether UCLA gives priority to their own applicants (although i doubt it) but as long as you work really hard at NYU, there should be no reason why you don’t get in.

What GPA should I have and what MCAT score since I want to go to ucla med school. What other things should I do during my 4 years in college to boost my chances and distinguish me from other applicants? Do you think I can have more opportunities in NY during my undergrad years working in a hospital or in LA?

I think you’re asking the wrong questions. Who you prefer?

Carmelo or Kobe?

If you like Kobe, go to UCLA. If you like Carmelo, go to NYU.

How much are your parents willing to contribute?

NYU isn’t honestly worth whatever massive debt you’d be paying. Med school will be expensive as well.

I’d go to UCLA, or at least find a cheaper undergrad “experience”.

I want to go to NYU…but i just don’t want to risk not getting into ucla med school…why do u say nyu is worth the debt?

Nobody on the main CC board recommends accumulating a debt load of over $100k for ANY university. This is massive debt that will haunt you for years after you graduate.

Also, what many students don’t realize is that there is 0 means to finance such a huge debt without their parents onboard. The max amount banks will loan you is something ~30k and the rest your parents must cosign. If your parents have bad credit, they can’t even help you.

For your dream to even be realized, your parents have to agree to pay a chunk of your tuition.

(I am recommending you re-ask this question here

because I personally am not as experienced in the college financing process as mom2collegekids.)

Here is an example of the type of responses you’ll receive on the CC main boards:

KOBE
and
UCLA

False that UCLA undergrad means higher chance into UCLA medical school. Many other factors go into an applicant besides undergrad major. That said, CA medical schools tend to give preference to CA undergraduates, since they are state supported.

Have you visited NYU? Personally, I wouldn’t take on the extra debt at NYU over UCLA. Undergraduate education is basically the same anywhere, though I’d bet you would receive more advising support at NYU. Where you pursue your undergraduate matters even less if you’re set on graduate/medical school. And then afterwards, where you went for residency matters more than your medical school.

More UCLA undergrads get in to UCLA med school probably because more apply there. Kids who go to UCLA tend to be from California, and they’ll tend to want to stay around here for med school unless they’re Harvard/Hopkins caliber.

I don’t think at this age you should be targeting any one specific medical school. You just want to put yourself in position to be able to go to some med school in the United States.

^exactly. Just remember that many MANY students enter college as pre-med…and change their mind during college. Getting into A med school is very difficult already.

On the question, the main problem I have NYU is that its not a typical college campus (you’ll know what I mean if you’ve visited). Its in the middle of the city, and the buildings are spaced out…so there’s no “central hub” for students. The college experience shouldn’t be missed out IMO, and LA can give you the big city feel while actually having great sports teams/a campus to meet people on. With the lack of a main campus, I doubt NYU has anywhere near the school spirit of UCLA. Living in NY apartments is way more expensive than LA too. I don’t know if you can justify paying 100k more…heck unless it was an Ivy league, I wouldn’t take it.

Oh, and Kobe and LA. Carmelo and the Knicks are overrated.

There’s your answer right there.

I would go to UCLA over NYU if the prices were equal. If you consider how much less UCLA costs then the answer is pretty obvious.
