I'm trying to decide between NYU Stern and Fordham for college next year. I'm receiving the same amount of money from both, so that's not really a factor. My biggest concern is which one will better prepare me for a career in international business and will best allow me to find a good job after college.

For NYU, I was accepted to the Business and Political Economy major. I've heard that the acceptance rate for this major was relatively low, and the program is pretty selective, but I was hoping to get another opinion on the major. Also, I would like to find out competitive this major will make me when I am applying for jobs.

In Fordham, I was accepted to the Gabelli School of Business, and my major does not have to be declared until junior year. I was, however, accepted to the Global Business Honors Program, a highly selective group of about 20 students that take honors course together and go on three study abroad trips together during their four years.

Basically, I would like to know if the fact that I am in the GBHP will make me as, if not more, competitive than a Stern graduate, as I know that Stern is one of the best business schools.

Any information that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

While Stern is a higher ranked program, I have heard first hand it is also a tough, unfriendly hyper-competative place to go to school from many who go there. Also, you have to like the area Stern is located as it will be part of your college experience and that has a value of it’s own. Fordham is very different as while it has a growing reputation and access to the same opportunities and internships in NYC as Stern, it is a close, friendly community on a traditional beucolic, green gothic campus vs. Stern which is one among many buildings in downtown Manhattan: apples and oranges. Visit both, talk to students at both before you decide.

I have a few friends in BPE and it’s definitely a very good program.

In BPE you go abroad to London your sophomore year (a capital of finance and IB) and then Shanghai for one semester junior year (another capital of finance).

BPE is also a really small program in that you take BPE specific classes (only kids in the classes are other BPE kids).

It’s no question when you factor in the selectivity and prestige of Stern vs Fordham.

NYU all the way especially if money isn’t the issue.

If they are giving you the same amount of money, why would you go to a regional school over an internationally lauded, ranked program? Stern. Fordham doesn’t compare, even with the honors program.

I would go with Stern. NYU’s international programs are unmatched globally and if you are truly interested in international business you should enroll in the BPE program as yoyoma999 mentioned which gives you a global rotation.

Regardless, if you choose to major in something else and co-major international business, Stern is the only school to send its entire Junior class abroad during Spring break to 3 global locations with the International Studies Program.

NYU as a whole offers the most study abroad sites of any university so if you do not want to be fixed to the locations in BPE, you will have the flexibility to choose your own destinations as well.
