October 2011 Literature Post Test Discussion

for the To Marguerite passage
what was the question for the “Imagery” one?
anyone remember?

@rbethell76, would a reference to god really be a classical alluision? I thought it was a biblical allusion, making emphatic repetition the choice.

If he had referred to Job or Adam, then perhaps. But not so if the poet simply almost invoked/talked to God. I wouldn’t exactly call that making a reference to a biblical story.

Right, so allusion was the correct answer, or the lack of allusion.

I really don’t think that mentioning “God” would be a classical allusion. Perhaps if the poem had said “the Gods”…

I felt like a lot of these questions were kind of ridiculous  Easier than the practice tests I took, but too many of them were subjective.

Did any of you feel that the narrator in the last poem was approving in regards to the street mischief, or was he objective? He stated that one’s body is their own, and one can do with it what one so desires. So is he necessarily advocating that one of youth SHOULD in fact engage in such mischief because there would not be the opportunity for it in old age? Or was he being objective, and saying that one should if one wishes?

This poem is rather subjective  What is not related to age in the poem? Commitment? Also, does the poem relate more to “live every day to the fullest” or “youth is wasted on the young”?

Ah! I thought I was doing so well until that last poem…
(although the Sophia one was difficult as well)

Sorry, I still think that an allusion to God was much more prevalent and meaningful than the repetition of the word “and” - I use the word “and” about 50 times in an essay, and I certainly am not appealing to repetition.

I can understand the argument, but even if repetition is the answer, I still think that the reference to God was more an allusion than the repetition of several common, and meaningless words were repetition.

Yes, the word “and” repeated, but I don’t think it was literary repetition.

Either way, its only one question, which on a subject test counts as what? 1 point after you dip below 800 ;)

I thought it was quite like the AP Lit Exam last May…if not a bit easier.

I thought “To Marguerite” was the most difficult selection.

I hope I’m 650+, but I’ll be happy with at least 600.

And I totally agree with the poems - poetry in general is 100% subjective…its actually been found through poet’s personal journals, like Frost, Whitman, and several others, that their poems are nothing about what teachers are teaching us today. To have 2 or 3 sections of that on a subject test is stupid, for the lack of better word lol

Unfortunately I thought there were only 54 questions (lol, it was my third test and I was tired…dont judge) so Im already at about a 770

Aprookie you can get a raw score of like 32 and still get a 600

Really? That’s good to know! A pretty generous curve.

Yeah - this is nothing like the SAT CR section

The subject tests, well at least most of them, are a lot harder than the SAT sections.

On Math level 2 and Literature you can get like 5 - 8 wrong and still be at an 800…which makes silly old me who accidentally forgot to do 8 questions a bit more confident.

Actually, I remember eliminating repetition because of this line:

A god, a god their severance ruled!

There are parallel structures throughout the poem. And God is a very commonplace invocation now. But I’m not sure if there’s a story like that in the bible. If there is, then it’s an allusion. If it is, then CB will have to be answerable for framing a question more favorable to Christians (since it’s not a well-known story.)

–
Great job on the typewith.me!

Yes I 100% agree that allusion could have been the answer, but I also believe repetition could have been - one of those unfairly difficult questions.

Oh well, like I said - Im aiming for just a 650, and Im pretty sure you can get like 20 questions wrong and still get that ;)

The test you guys are discussing is the one that was administered back in January, which had also been administered a number of times before.

Shucks! If only previous papers were available more freely.

Was one of the answers “in media res” for the one about the mother dying?

so…???

Anyone nervous? Only 4 days left!

Don’t remember any ‘in media res’, decillion.

3 days, starting to get the nervous vibes.

Seven eight zero! :d
