October 2012 SAT Discussion

it is

that of traveling in opposite direction vs.
that in traveling in opposite direction

the answer should be “that in traveling” because of parallelism. energy needed in traveling from sun to earth than that in traveling

it’s "that expended in traveling in the opposite direction " for the choice E of that one
i put that one since if you just use that of you don’t know for sure what they’re talking about and the expended sounds better

a few CR reading questions:

 1. which one was the experimental?
 2. was the answer to the willy-nilly internet organization of websites = inchoate? i skipped that one
 3. for the one on dinosaurs, what was the reality behind the reason the author wished was true? was it that it was not the complete reason for the dinosaur obsession? or was it that people wanted to use it for commercial reasons?
 4. is it ok to miss 1 grid-in for an 800? (math)

Does anyone know the wording of the entire Earth and Moon question?

yes, vanpersie

It’s D. than that in the opposite direction

E is redundant.

I don’t think its possible to get the 800 missing one. I missed the SA of the Cube question i never even thought that the SA would remain the same with or without the small section off. I got 3 wrong on math on the last SAT and got a 730 so missing a grid in will probably get you a 790 because you don’t get penalized for grid ins

@pineapple, 1. No clue. 2. Well that must be experimental, I didn’t have it, I had writing experimental, so hopefully #1 is answered! 3. Umm somehow I remember that question, but I don’t remember those choices, do you know more exact wording of it? 4. Hmm depends on the curve. Pretty sure I got one or two wrong on the may one and got a 780

But if you only miss one question, the penalty doesn’t really count b/c it rounds up. So you could get -1 by missing one question or missing a grid-in. I think I got 800 on writing (if the essay graders are nice) and probably 750 on CR b/c it’s hard…so i’m really counting on the math :)

Eh, I remember a few years ago, I think it was the 2010 October SAT, the math curve was brutal, and 1 wrong meant 770… I really hope -1 is 790 though.

Nvm, I think I missed 1 mc and got a 780

My last SAT 3 wrong on math was a 730 I was so surprised how much i lost

I know I got 2 confirmed wrong, and maybe 1-2 other silly mistakes. Hoping for 720/730ish on math. Please god.

Oh and 3 or 4 wrong on CR so far. Please give me 730+ on CR dear SAT lords. and 800 W with 12 essay would be nice.

what were the no errors on the writing section other than the Margaret Thatcher one? Some people are saying the cuttlefish and scientist one was also but wasn’t ‘they’ ambiguous?

But if you only miss one question, the penalty doesn’t really count b/c it rounds up. So you could get -1 by missing one question or missing a grid-in. I think I got 800 on writing (if the essay graders are nice) and probably 750 on CR b/c it’s hard…so i’m really counting on the math

Every question you miss is not just 1/4 point lost, but a number of points not gained

i think you use the expended again
or else the ‘that’ refers to energy expended a noun and a verb

Oh btw about the subversive vs superfluous, what was the consensus? I put superfluous because I thought subversive was a bit too extreme and took way too much reading between the lines, so I picked superfluous, but I’m a bit unsure

The verb, I think, is play because you have two nouns.

Some people are saying the answer was “than that of traveling in opposite direction” (D) while others are saying it was “than that expended in the opposite direction” (E).
I was so confused on this one; both sounded right but the first seemed more concise, so I just chose that. But is E really the right answer?

Couldn’t “that of” represent “energy expended in”? So D would be the shorter and, thus, better answer?

for the Margaret Thatcher one, i said there was no error, but my friend say that the tense was wrong or something? like earning was supposed to be having earned or something?

and the cuttlefish one was not ambiguous i think b/c cuttlefish = it, and scientist = they.

also, @lilyy96: i said that it was superfluous b/c the text supported the fact that it was unnecessary for the people to write/read b/c their oral tradition was working so well and that writing would be an “interloper”
