off-campus housing

I read something about transfer students living in St. Mary's dorms untill space was available at ND. Does this still happen? What are the chances of getting placed into a dorm at ND, because I know transfer students are placed off campus? How are the off campus housing/apartments? Do most people like certain places over others and is it still fun to live off-campus..? Can you still have a social life if you are stuck off-campus at first?

I doubt that any transfer students live at St. Mary's.

The quality of off-campus housing versus on-campus is a push in general. If you have a penthouse in Sorin or Walsh that will probably be better than some apartment on the northside. But if you live in a dungeon in Fisher, probably anything will be an upgrade. The upside of off-campus is no duLac, the downside is real police. Being placed off campus as a new student can make it a bit more difficult to integrate, but you just have to study in LaFortune so you meet lots of people.

First of all, Fisher is no dungeon, we only portray that image to keep people away. Think of it like why Greenland and Iceland are named the way they are.

That being said, my transfer year was the only year they did the SMC housing to the best of my knowledge, I know it didn't happen the year after now that SMC is filling up more than it used to. There are plenty of good places to be off-campus, and I will help you find those when the time comes as I went through this. I ended up living at Castle Point my first semester and it really wasn't bad at all! It is a little harder to meet people, but again, not bad.

As for how many people get on-campus housing...it now is probably under 50% at the start of the year but by the start of the second semester pretty much 100%.

With the new dorm being built for guys, maybe more on-campus housing will be available without the overcrowding. I believe it is supposed to be ready next fall!

Nope, they are going to close down Carrol and turn it into a hotel.

Are you serious? Carroll will be a hotel? I know it is a hike from campus, but we were hoping that more on-campus housing would be available to help alleviate the overcrowding. Carroll is a beautiful old building (from the outside-never been inside). When is this expected to occur-by next fall as well? Can we assume that it will be similar to the Morris Inn? Do tell what you know!

On the topic of housing, my aunt(an ND alum) said that students admitted EA get to choose their dorm. Is this true?

That's not true, nope. Roomie was admitted early. Got stuck with me but in sweetest dorm ever. Didn't get to choose though..

I thought it sounded a little contradictory to the random placement that the admissions officers had talked about...

My roommate had some map of future construction on and around campus, and it said they were going to convert Carrol into a hotel. I asked some high power alum and he confirmed it. I have no idea when it is going to happen though.

Some very connected, have a very small input on what dorm to be put in. But otherwise, with the exception of roughly 8 or so picks each rector/rectress has to draw people in, the dorms are completely random.
